KUALA LUMPUR : France's vibrant startup ecosystem, exemplified by Station F, offers a compelling roadmap for Malaysia's artificial intelligence (AI) entrepreneurs, says the head of Malaysia's National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO).
Shamsul Izhan Abdul Majid said Station F, the world's largest startup facility located in the heart of Paris, boasts more than 1,000 startups, an installed presence of global venture capital and a deep corporate innovation network.
Inspired by this model, he said NAIO is building cross-border innovation pathways in sectors such as healthcare, transport, agriculture, education, public services and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
Speaking at the launch of the France-Malaysia Innovation Day 2025, Shamsul said France has set a new high bar in technology innovation, emphasising the government's commitment to continued collaboration and idea sharing between Malaysia and France.
'By reducing friction in cross-border research and development, we empower AI startups to thrive on both sides of the world.
'This is how AI diplomacy becomes real: with a focus on collaboration, shared governance and sector legal information that corresponds to the challenges of our time,' he said.
By connecting France's technological depth with Malaysia's talent, Shamsul said Malaysia is more than prepared to build inventions that are not only advanced but also adaptive, inclusive and human-centred.
'France's contributions to AI, engineering and cutting-edge research, from quantum machine learning to world-leading robotics, offer boundless avenues for joint collaboration.'
French ambassador to Malaysia Axel Cruau, who was also present at the event, affirmed Malaysia's role in spearheading digital innovation in Southeast Asia.
'With Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year, its push for the Asean Digital Economic Framework Agreement (Defa), and its organisation of Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is poised to position itself as a regional leader for innovation, digital transformation, and ethical AI use,' he said.
Defa, introduced at the 2023 Asean Economic Ministers' meeting in Indonesia, provides a vision of digital transformation committed to empowering Asean businesses in unlocking a borderless era of economic growth.
Cruau also reiterated France's commitment to supporting Malaysian tech startups through French Tech Malaysia, a French government initiative aimed at expanding the country's entrepreneurial ecosystem in Malaysia.

Meta makes major investment in Scale AI, takes in CEO

Meta is expected to hold a minority stake in Scale AI following the completion of the investment deal. (AP pic) SAN FRANCISCO : Scale AI announced a 'significant' new investment by Meta late yesterday that values the startup at more than US$29 billion and puts its founder to work for the tech titan. Scale AI founder and chief executive Alexandr Wang will join Meta to work on the tech giant's own artificial intelligence (AI) efforts as part of the deal, according to the startup. Meta was reportedly pouring more than US$10 billion into San Francisco-based Scale AI, and acquires its 28-year-old CEO amid fierce competition in the AI race with rivals such as OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. Scale AI works with businesses, governments and labs to exploit the benefits of AI, according to the startup. 'Meta's investment recognises Scale's accomplishments to date and reaffirms that our path forward – like that of AI – is limitless,' Wang said in a release. 'Scale bridges the gap between human values and technology to help our customers realise AI's full potential,' Wang added. Scale AI will use the infusion of capital to accelerate innovation and strengthen partnerships, along with distributing proceeds to equity holders, according to the startup. Meta will hold a minority stake in Scale AI after the investment deal closes. Tech industry veteran and investor Jason Droege, a co-founder of Uber Eats food delivery platform, will take over as chief of Scale AI, according to the company. 'Scale has led the charge in accelerating AI development,' Droege said in a release. 'We have built the strongest foundation to tackle AI's data challenges and push the boundaries of what's possible,' he said. Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg recently touted the tech firm's generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant, telling shareholders it is used by a billion people each month across its platforms.

Ringgit rallies against greenback on weak US data

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit extended its gains against the US dollar at Friday's open, buoyed by continued weakness in US economic data, an analyst said. At 8am, the local unit strengthened to 4.2095/4.2270 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2155/4.2245. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.72% to 97.0921, its lowest since March 2022, as data indicated a cooling labour market and moderating inflation trajectory. He noted the core Producer Price Index (PPI) for May rose 3.0% year-on-year, below the consensus estimate of 3.1%. Initial jobless claims also rose to 248,000 last week, higher than the forecast of 242,000. 'Such data are seen as critical in shaping the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) stance ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on June 17 and 18,' he added. Afzanizam said while the Fed is expected to keep the Federal Funds Rate unchanged at 4.50%, market participants will be watching the central bank's quarterly economic projections closely. 'In March, Fed officials projected the policy rate at 3.9% for 2025, which implies two rate cuts this year. 'On that note, we believe emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, are poised to appreciate,' he said. At the same time, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.8860/4.9063 from Thursday's close of 4.8765/4.8869, but weakened vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9412/2.9539 from 2.9329/2.9394, and slipped against the British pound to 5.7363/5.7601 from 5.7213/5.7335. Against Asean currencies, the ringgit was mixed. It edged up against the Philippine peso to 7.54/7.58 from 7.55/7.57 and gained slightly versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.3 from 259.5/260.2. However, it eased against the Singapore dollar to 3.2936/3.3078 from 3.2934/3.3006, and declined against the Thai baht to 13.0124/13.0754 from 12.9828/13.0173.
