Nvidia, AMD China revenue deal could be model for others, says Bessent
'I think we could see it in other industries over time,' Bessent said Wednesday in a television interview on Bloomberg Surveillance. 'Right now, this is unique, but now that we have the model and the beta test, why not expand it?'
Bessent credited President Donald Trump with the 'very unique solution' of allowing Nvidia to expand in China and become a bellwether for Chinese technology, with the US taxpayer getting 'a share of' the reward. The revenue the Treasury receives from the arrangement will go to pay down debt, he said.
'If we could make a substantial debt' repayment, that would then allow for discussions about a program of sending money to taxpayers, he also said.
Asked about reporting that China is urging its companies to avoid the Nvidia H20 processors now allowed for its market, Bessent said 'sure, we can discuss that' with the Chinese. 'But it also tells me that they are worried about the Nvidia chips becoming the standard in China.'
China Talks On Tuesday, Bessent said that he'd be meeting again with his Chinese counterparts 'within the next two or three months,' speaking on Fox Business. He dismissed the possibility of China emulating other US trading partners in winning tariff relief in return for boosting investments in the US.
When asked if China could make pledges worth billions of dollars like Japan, South Korea and the EU have as part of their trade agreements, Bessent said 'my sense is no because a lot of the buyout or the funds from the buyout are going to go to critical industries that we need to reshore and a lot of those need to be reshored away from China.'
Whether the industry was semiconductors, rare-earth magnets, pharmaceuticals or steel, 'my sense is that isn't what will happen,' Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday.
Tech and AI have been among the most high profile of areas of competition between the world's two biggest economies. President Donald Trump has extended a pause of higher tariffs on Chinese goods for another 90 days into early November, a move that stabilized trade ties between the world's two largest economies while they try to forge an agreement.
Chinese companies in sectors such as electric vehicles have opened factories abroad to access new markets, a move that could also help them skirt US tariffs.
He also indicated that Washington wanted to see measures from China over an extended period to stem the flow of chemicals used to make fentanyl before lowering duties Trump put in place over the issue.
'We will need to see months, if not quarters, if not a year, of progress on that before I could imagine those tariffs coming down,' he said.

China urges Thailand, Cambodia reconciliation in three-way talks

In a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Maris, Mr. Wang spoke about China's readiness to accelerate a China-Thailand railway construction project, encourage more investments from Chinese enterprises in Thailand and ensure the stability of the regional production and supply chain. It is hoped that Thailand will provide more policy support and facilitation for Chinese enterprises, he told his Thai counterpart. While meeting with Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Mr. Wang sounded support for Cambodia maintaining political stability, and said China is appreciative of the country's crackdown on online gambling and wire fraud. He also expressed hopes that Cambodia will continue strong measures for joint efforts in the region against cross-border criminal activities.

Pakistan will set up Rocket Force Command: Shehbaz
Pakistan will establish a new military force to supervise its missile capabilities, the Prime Minister has said, after its worst conflict in decades with India. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the formation of the Rocket Force Command while addressing an Independence Day ceremony in Islamabad attended by senior military officials late on Wednesday (August 13, 2025). 'It will be equipped with modern technology and capable of striking the enemy from all directions,' Mr. Sharif said at the ceremony, during which the deadly clash with India in May dominated official speeches and displays. 'It will improve our conventional war capabilities,' he said, commending the military for its performance. Pakistan and India fought an intense four-day conflict in May that killed dozens of people on both sides in missile, drone and artillery fire, the worst clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999. Higher defence spend Islamabad is boosting its military capabilities following the conflict, increasing defence spending by 20% in the current Budget that was passed in June. It also announced that it was in discussions to acquire 40 new Chinese fighter jets and new air defence systems. 'After the recent conflict, the object of course is to further strengthen Pakistan's military capability and this is a part of that process,' defence analyst Talat Masood said. The May conflict was triggered by a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians. Foxconn sees robust AI demand as second-quarter profit tops forecast
Foxconn on Thursday forecast a significant rise in third-quarter revenue as the world's biggest iPhone maker said it had for the first time made more money from its AI server business than from smart electronics last quarter. The company said artificial intelligence server revenue is expected to leap more than 170% year-on-year in the coming quarter, though it also warned of uncertainty from U.S. tariffs. Nvidia's biggest server maker and Apple's top iPhone assembler has been riding a data centre boom, as cloud computing firms such as Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet's Google spend billions of dollars to expand their AI infrastructure and research capacity. Cloud and networking products, which include servers, accounted for 41% of its revenue in the second quarter, while smart consumer products represented 35%, the company said. The contribution from the server business to its revenue is set to grow further in the current quarter, as Foxconn expects a slight decline in smart consumer electronics revenue. Some experts expect iPhone sales to slow after they surged in the June quarter ahead of the expected imposition of U.S. tariffs. "AI has been the primary growth driver so far this year," Kathy Yang, rotating CEO of Foxconn, said on a call with media and analysts. She warned however that "close attention is needed due to the impact of changes in tariffs and exchange rates". The company said on Thursday its capital spending would rise more than 20% this year, as it plans to boost server production capacity in its manufacturing sites in Texas and Wisconsin. Global trade uncertainty and particularly the trade spat between the U.S. and China could dim its outlook this year as it has a major manufacturing presence in China, though Washington and Beijing this week extended a tariff truce for another 90 days. Most of the iPhones Foxconn makes for Apple are assembled in China, but the bulk of those sold in the U.S. are now produced in India. The company is also building factories in Mexico and Texas to make AI servers for Nvidia. LORDSTOWN SOLD Foxconn has also been looking to expand its footprint in electric vehicles, which the company sees as a major future growth generator, though that has not always gone smoothly. Earlier this month, Foxconn said it had struck a deal to sell a former car factory at Lordstown, Ohio, for $375 million that it purchased in 2022 to manufacture EVs. However, it will continue to occupy the facility. The company said the Ohio plant would be used to manufacture cloud-related products. The goal of manufacturing its Model C EV for the U.S. market remains unchanged, although initial production will take place in Taiwan, Foxconn said. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that the plant was sold to its partner SoftBank. Foxconn and SoftBank declined to comment. Overall, the company reported net profit for the April-June period of T$44.4 billion ($1.48 billion), higher than the consensus estimate of T$38.8 billion compiled by LSEG. Foxconn, formally Hon Hai Precision Industry, last month reported record second-quarter revenue on strong demand for AI products, but cautioned over geopolitical and exchange rate headwinds. Its shares have risen 8.4% so far this year, outperforming the broader Taiwan index's 5.2% gain. They closed up 0.5% on Thursday ahead of the earnings release.
