New Kings GM Reveals Goal For Team After Disappointing Season
The Sacramento Kings are preparing to usher in a new era after it was announced that general manager Monte McNair and owner Vivek Ranadive have agreed to part ways.
On Wednesday, the Kings held a press conference to introduce Scott Perry as their new GM.

New Kings GM reveals goal
Back in 2017, Perry was hired by the Kings to be their vice president of operations.
Eight years to the day later, Perry was hired by the Kings as general manager after a sting with the New York Knicks in the same role.
The Kings finished this past season as the No. 10 seed in a loaded Western Conference. They fell to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Play-In Tournament.
With a new general manager, hopefully comes a new direction. Perry was up front with his hopes and expectations in this role.

"The goal here is to build a sustainable winner," said Perry.
Some were surprised that the Kings still made the playoffs after trading away De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs.
While the Kings got Zach LaVine back as part of the three-team deal, it was a peculiar choice to pair him back up with DeMar DeRozan, given the apparent peaks and limitations they showed during their time with the Chicago Bulls.
The Kings have little to no chance at landing the top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery at just 0.8%.
Unfortunately, there might not be much change between next year's team and what we saw this season. LaVine is due $47.5 million next season and has a player option for nearly $49 million the next season.
DeRozan, Domantas Sabonis, Malik Monk and Keegan Murray are all also under contract for next season. Will Perry attempt a wholesale change, or keep going down the same path?

Former Bruin Marco Sturm named the team's head coach
Advertisement Sturm was an emotional player who scored some big goals during his Black and Gold tenure, including a playoff winner against the Canadiens in 2008 and an overtime strike against the Flyers in the first Winter Classic at Fenway Park in 2010. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively,' Don Sweeney said. 'We were also looking for a communicator and leader – someone who connects with players, develops young talent, and earns the respect of the room. Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion." Following a 938-game NHL career that wrapped in 2012, Sturm embarked on a coaching career, guiding the German national team as head coach and general manager beginning in 2015. Germany won a surprise silver medal at the 2018 Olympics. Advertisement After spending four seasons as a Kings assistant, Sturm has spent the last three seasons as head coach of Los Angeles's top affiliate, the Ontario Reign. He had a 119-80-11 mark with the Reign. Sturm was a finalist last year for San Jose's head coaching vacancy that eventually went to Ryan Warsofsky, who just led the United States to the gold medal at the IIHF World Championship. — Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins) A defensively responsible winger during his playing career, Sturm's time in the Kings organization, which preaches a philosophy of strict defensive structure and strong goaltending, should make him a strong fit in Boston. The 46-year-old Sturm fits the profile of what general manager Don Sweeney was looking for in a coach. 'Evolve offensively, especially with younger players, and integrate them,' Sweeney said at the team's end-of-season news conference. 'But if you don't defend in the National Hockey League, you don't have sustained success.' The Bruins have a strong defense corps featuring veterans Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, and Nikita Zadorov. Additionally, Jeremy Swayman appeared to return to form in backstopping the US to gold last month in Stockholm. Jim McBride can be reached at

Marco Sturm hired as Bruins coach: Why the ex-left wing is back behind the bench
The Boston Bruins have hired Marco Sturm as their head coach, the team announced Thursday. Sturm replaces Joe Sacco, who had been serving on an interim basis since Jim Montgomery was dismissed in November. Sturm, 46, was previously head coach of the Ontario Reign, the Los Angeles Kings' AHL affiliate. He also spent four seasons as a Kings assistant. Advertisement Sturm is best known in Boston for being Patrice Bergeron's former left wing. He appeared in 302 games for the Bruins after arriving from the San Jose Sharks in the Joe Thornton trade. Sturm made his mark as a speedy left wing with a knack for scoring timely goals. His knee injury in the 2010 playoffs opened the door for Brad Marchand to make the team the following season. Sturm's intention is to build more of a resume behind the Bruins bench than he did for the franchise on the ice. While he does not have NHL head-coaching experience, Sturm won the job by maximizing his strengths during interviews with general manager Don Sweeney: explaining his details-focused approach and engaging with his upbeat personality. The Kings have a history of being a defense-first franchise that features stingy goaltending and structured play in their zone. This aligns with how Sweeney sees the path toward a turnaround. Sturm delivers his message more in the upbeat style of Montgomery than the straightforward Sacco. Mason Lohrei (24), Matt Poitras (21) and Fraser Minten (20) are among the young players who could benefit from Sturm's positivity. Sturm has international coaching and managing experience. The native of Dingolfing, Germany, was his country's coach for three seasons in the World Championship. He was GM of Germany's World Juniors rosters for three seasons, as well. Sturm will be tasked with helping the Bruins right the course after they finished with the league's fifth-worst record in 2024-25. He will lean on David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy, the two alternate captains. Sturm will also be counting on Jeremy Swayman to continue the turnaround he initiated in helping Team USA win gold at the 2025 World Championship.

Pelicans exec makes Zion Williamson stance clear after bombshell rape allegations
The rape allegations against Zion Williamson are not affecting the Pelicans' plans for his future with the organization. While new executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said he had been 'advised not to venture into any of his legal issues' in an interview with The Times-Picayune, he made it clear the team intends to build around its former No. 1 overall pick. 'I've had really good conversations with Zion,' Dumars, the former Pistons title-winning executive, said Wednesday. 'We've had lunch. Dinner. Watched playoff games together. We've done it all. I've had some real, honest conversations with him. Some real direct and honest conversations. 'We're going to go forward with Zion. He's going to continue to be a focal point here as we go forward.' 4 Zion Williamson during a March 2025 game. NBAE via Getty Images Williamson's standing with the franchise came into question following the bombshell rape allegations made against him in a lawsuit filed last week by woman claiming to be his ex-girlfriend. The woman, identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe, alleges the forward raped her twice in 2020 and 'continued to abuse, rape, assault and batter plaintiff' until their relationship ended in 2023. On Sept. 23, 2020, the woman alleges Williamson 'pinned Plaintiff down on the bed with her hands behind her back and raped her' after she refused to have sex with him. Williamson is also alleged to have called her 'stuck up' and a 'b—h.' Roughly one month later on Oct. 10, amid a discussion about Doe possibly visiting a friend, Williamson is alleged to have 'picked her up, threw her down to the ground, and pinned her shoulders down so she could not move,' and then 'violently raped Plaintiff in multiple ways.' 4 The Pelicans recently hired Joe Dumars as their executive VP of basketball operations. AP The woman is seeking between $18 million to $50 million, according to ESPN. Williamson denied the allegations, and his legal counsel said they planned to file counterclaims and 'seek significant damages for this defamatory lawsuit.' 'We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and we unequivocally deny them. The allegations contained in the complaint are categorically false and reckless,' Williamson's legal counsel told The Post in late May. 'This is the plaintiff's third set of attorneys. This appears to be an attempt to exploit a professional athlete driven by a financial motive rather than any legitimate grievance.' 4 Williamson represented the Pelicans at the NBA Draft Lottery. NBAE via Getty Images While Dumars did not comment on the lawsuit, Pelicans owner Gayle Benson addressed the topic Tuesday but did not offer much. 'You know, lawsuits are lawsuits,' Benson said, according to The Times-Picayune. 'You really can't … You don't know. I mean people can sue you for anything. There's no reason you can be innocent or not. It's just something that people do, unfortunately.' Before this lawsuit emerged, the Pelicans reportedly had been open to moving anyone on the roster in their attempt to build a winner after missing the playoffs for the fourth time in Williamson's six seasons. 4 Zion Williamson missed 52 games last season. Getty Images Dumars, though, said that sending Williamson to the NBA Draft Lottery in May — before the lawsuit's unveiling — showed the team's commitment to him. The Pelicans will pick seventh in the upcoming draft. 'I sent him to the lottery for a reason,' Dumars told the publication. 'I want him to start focusing on the responsibilities of being the best player here and the focal point. There are some responsibilities that come with that. Go represent your organization.' Any revival in New Orleans will need Williamson to be healthy and productive, the former having been a major issue since he landed with the franchise after starring at Duke. Though Williamson has averaged 24.7 points and 6.6 rebounds in his career, he's appeared in 60 or more games just twice in six seasons. Williamson, 24, played in just 30 games this past season and missed the entire 2021-22 season due to a foot injury. He's appeared in just 214 games. 'We've had some real direct conversations with him about that,' Dumars said, per the outlet. 'Expectations. Accountability. That's our plan going forward with Zion.'
