Government pushes mining sector reforms to attract global investment: Egypt's minister
The transformation, he said, will also facilitate key geological and seismic studies to attract investment by highlighting the country's mining potential.
He noted that several ongoing projects are currently focused on conducting aerial and seismic surveys to map mineral resources across Egypt. These efforts form part of a broader national strategy to drive a qualitative shift in the mining sector.
Badawi made these remarks during a meeting with members of the American Chamber of Commerce's Mining Committee in Egypt. The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister Moataz Atef, representatives from the Ministry's technical office, and the official spokesperson.
The AmCham delegation included Hoda Mansour, Vice President of AngloGold Ashanti; Sherif Barakat, Co-Chair of the Mining Committee and General Manager of Aton Mining; Mostafa El Gebaly, Co-Chair of the Committee and Managing Director of Abu Zaabal Fertilizers and Chemicals; Silvia Menassa, CEO of AmCham Egypt; Dina Nawar, Chief Operating Officer at AmCham; Heba Raslan, Partner at Sharkawy & Sarhan Law Firm; Omar Shawky, Managing Partner at Forvis Mazars Mostafa Shawki; and Nouran El Gohary, Committee Coordinator at AmCham.
The Minister emphasised the growing global importance of the mining industry and reaffirmed the Egyptian government's commitment to developing this promising sector. He stressed the country's aim to attract leading international mining firms and position Egypt as a key player in the global mining landscape. The Ministry, he added, is working to expand mining activities and maximise value-added outputs to deliver stronger economic returns to the state.
Badawi also praised the longstanding strategic partnership between Egypt's petroleum sector and the American Chamber of Commerce, commending the Chamber's role in encouraging US investment in Egypt. He asserted that this is the ideal time for foreign companies to invest in the country's mining sector.
For their part, the AmCham delegation welcomed the government's continued support for mining sector development, particularly the reform of mining agreements and EMRA's restructuring. These steps, they said, are enhancing investor confidence and making Egypt more attractive to global mining companies.
The delegation also referenced their recent visit to Washington, D.C., where they observed considerable interest from the US administration in Egypt's mining reforms. They noted a growing push to encourage American companies to explore opportunities in Egypt, especially in critical and rare earth minerals and strategic mining projects.

Trump announces $100 billion new investment pledge from Apple
President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in the United States, a move that could help it sidestep potential tariffs on iPhones. The new pledge raises Apple's total domestic investment commitment in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. Earlier this year, the company announced it would invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers across the country in that period. The announcement centres on expanding Apple's supply chain and advanced manufacturing footprint in the US, but still falls short of Trump's demand that Apple begin making iPhones domestically. "Companies like Apple, they're coming home. They're all coming home," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, moments after Apple CEO Tim Cook gave him a US-made souvenir with a 24-karat gold base. "This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in America also are made in America," Trump added. Asked if Apple could eventually build entire iPhones in the US, Cook noted that many components such as semiconductors, glass and Face ID modules are already made domestically, but said that final assembly will remain overseas "for a while." While the investment pledge is significant, analysts say the numbers align with Apple's typical spending patterns and echo commitments made during both the Biden administration and Trump's previous term. In May, Trump had threatened Apple with a 25% tariff on products manufactured overseas, a sharp reversal from earlier policy when his administration had exempted smartphones, computers and other electronics from rounds of tariffs on Chinese imports. Trump's effort to reshape global trade through tariffs cost Apple $800 million in the June quarter. "Today is a good step in the right direction for Apple, and it helps get on Trump's good side after what appears to be a tension-filled few months in the eyes of the Street between the White House and Apple," said Daniel Ives, an analyst with Wedbush Securities. "A savvy solution" Apple has a mixed track record when it comes to following through on investment promises. In 2019, for instance, Cook toured a Texas factory with Trump that was promoted as a new manufacturing site. But the facility had been producing Apple computers since 2013 and Apple has since moved that production to Thailand. Apple continues to manufacture most of its products, including iPhones and iPads, in Asia, primarily in China, although it has shifted some production to Vietnam, Thailand and India in recent years. Despite political pressure, analysts widely agree that building iPhones in the U.S. remains unrealistic due to labor costs and the complexity of the global supply chain. "The announcement is a savvy solution to the president's demand that Apple manufacture all iPhones in the U.S.," said Nancy Tengler, CEO and CIO of Laffer Tengler Investments, which holds Apple shares. Partners on Apple's latest U.S. investment effort include specialty glass maker Corning, semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier Applied Materials, and chipmakers Texas InstrumentsO, GlobalFoundries, Broadcom and Samsung. Apple said Samsung will supply chips from its production plant in Texas for its products including iPhones, while GlobalWafers said it would be supplying 300mm silicon wafers from its Texas plant. Apple shares closed up 5% on Wednesday. Shares of Corning rose nearly 4% in extended trading, while Applied Materials gained almost 2%.

BRF's Saudi investor says it has no influence on management
SAO PAULO: SALIC International Investment Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company, told Brazilian competition authorities on Wednesday it is a passive minority shareholder in rival food producers BRF and Minerva . SIIC, which owns 11.03% of BRF and 24.49% of Minerva, said "it does not hold any political rights that would allow it to interfere with or influence the independence and normal course of business and management of BRF and Minerva." The Saudi investor's clarification comes after a formal information request made by Brazil's antitrust watchdog CADE regarding the proposed takeover of BRF by Marfrig. The deal was approved by the minority shareholders of both companies on Tuesday. The Saudi investor abstained from voting and did not participate in the merger discussions of BRF and Marfrig, according to CADE's disclosures. Separately, CADE cleared the proposed transaction in early June. But CADE's nod was later challenged by Minerva, which asked it to scrutinize the deal more closely. Minerva claimed the merger would involve the transfer of BRF's current shareholders, including SALIC, to Marfrig's shareholding structure through a share swap. Minerva said if the transaction went ahead, the Saudi investor would gain influence over the business decisions of three competitors: Minerva, Marfrig, and BRF. BRF and Marfrig did not comment. CADE responded to Minerva by agreeing with a more prolonged merger review, according to a public decision on Monday. "The alleged facts, if proven, may indicate a possible alignment of interests and exchange of sensitive information between ... competitors," CADE's general superintendent wrote. That decision must be confirmed by a virtual CADE panel on August 11. By law, CADE has a 240-day deadline to investigate complex mergers, extendable by 90 days. If approved, Marfrig and BRF will create another global Brazilian food processor, with factories across the Americas, the Middle East and Asia. (Reporting by Ana Mano; Editing by Chris Reese)

Apple to announce new $100bn investment in US manufacturing
Apple was set to announce plans on Wednesday to invest another $100 billion in US manufacturing, as the iPhone maker seeks to avoid President Donald Trump's tariffs. The new commitment would bring its total pledge to invest in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. The company pledged in February to invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers. The investment was also expected to include moving towards assembling more critical components in the US, Reuters reported, quoting a White House official. The announcement comes after Mr Trump threatened to hit the Big Tech giant with a 25 per cent tariff for making its flagship devices outside the US. Apple shares were 5.91 per cent higher at $214.92 during afternoon trading. In the company's earnings call last week, Apple chief Tim Cook told investors that it had taken a hit of about $800 million from tariff-related costs last quarter and about $1.1 billion this quarter. Mr Cook told analysts during the call that the 'vast majority' of iPhones sold in the US come from India. Most other Apple products such as MacBooks and iPads that are sold in the US are made in Vietnam, he said. 'We obviously try to optimise our supply chain,' Mr Cook said at the time. 'And ultimately, we will do more in the United States.' Apple had planned this year to switch its assembly for all US-destined iPhones from China to India to avoid the escalatory tariffs Mr Trump had placed on Beijing. During his visit to Qatar this year, Mr Trump said there was 'a little problem' with Apple and recalled a conversation he had with Mr Cook in which the President said he did not want the company building in India. India has lately been in Mr Trump's crosshairs. The President on Wednesday imposed a 25 per cent tariff on New Delhi for buying Russian oil. The new tariff, due to take effect in three weeks, comes on top of a previously announced 25 per cent tariff that was set to be implemented on Wednesday. Mr Trump has accused the country of indirectly or directly buying Russian oil. India condemned the latest action as 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable'. It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine. Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, 'several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu's government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages]. The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a 'biblical famine' and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation. Band Aid Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts. With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it's Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians. Following the single's success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved. Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world. The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
