Trump announces $100 billion new investment pledge from Apple
The new pledge raises Apple's total domestic investment commitment in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. Earlier this year, the company announced it would invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers across the country in that period.
The announcement centres on expanding Apple's supply chain and advanced manufacturing footprint in the US, but still falls short of Trump's demand that Apple begin making iPhones domestically.
"Companies like Apple, they're coming home. They're all coming home," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, moments after Apple CEO Tim Cook gave him a US-made souvenir with a 24-karat gold base.
"This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in America also are made in America," Trump added.
Asked if Apple could eventually build entire iPhones in the US, Cook noted that many components such as semiconductors, glass and Face ID modules are already made domestically, but said that final assembly will remain overseas "for a while."
While the investment pledge is significant, analysts say the numbers align with Apple's typical spending patterns and echo commitments made during both the Biden administration and Trump's previous term.
In May, Trump had threatened Apple with a 25% tariff on products manufactured overseas, a sharp reversal from earlier policy when his administration had exempted smartphones, computers and other electronics from rounds of tariffs on Chinese imports. Trump's effort to reshape global trade through tariffs cost Apple $800 million in the June quarter.
"Today is a good step in the right direction for Apple, and it helps get on Trump's good side after what appears to be a tension-filled few months in the eyes of the Street between the White House and Apple," said Daniel Ives, an analyst with Wedbush Securities.
"A savvy solution"
Apple has a mixed track record when it comes to following through on investment promises.
In 2019, for instance, Cook toured a Texas factory with Trump that was promoted as a new manufacturing site. But the facility had been producing Apple computers since 2013 and Apple has since moved that production to Thailand.
Apple continues to manufacture most of its products, including iPhones and iPads, in Asia, primarily in China, although it has shifted some production to Vietnam, Thailand and India in recent years.
Despite political pressure, analysts widely agree that building iPhones in the U.S. remains unrealistic due to labor costs and the complexity of the global supply chain.
"The announcement is a savvy solution to the president's demand that Apple manufacture all iPhones in the U.S.," said Nancy Tengler, CEO and CIO of Laffer Tengler Investments, which holds Apple shares.
Partners on Apple's latest U.S. investment effort include specialty glass maker Corning, semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier Applied Materials, and chipmakers Texas InstrumentsO, GlobalFoundries, Broadcom and Samsung.
Apple said Samsung will supply chips from its production plant in Texas for its products including iPhones, while GlobalWafers said it would be supplying 300mm silicon wafers from its Texas plant.
Apple shares closed up 5% on Wednesday. Shares of Corning rose nearly 4% in extended trading, while Applied Materials gained almost 2%.

UAE, Russia sign Trade in Services & Investment Agreement during ceremony in Moscow
In H1 2025, non-oil trade with Russia increased to $6.65 billion, delivering a substantial 75.3% year-on-year increase. HE Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi: 'The UAE continues to build partnerships around the world to achieve development and prosperity as well as provide more opportunities for the private sector and investors.' Moscow, Russia – The United Arab Emirates and Russian Federation today signed a Trade in Services and Investment Agreement (TISIA), on the sidelines of the visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to Moscow, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed ways to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries in a number of areas of mutual interest. This agreement is set to further enhance economic cooperation between the UAE and Russia, facilitating greater market access for services and encouraging increased foreign direct investment (FDI) flows. The TISIA was signed by His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, and Maxim Reshetnikov, Russian Minister of Economic Development. The agreement will complement the UAE's existing Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). While the EPA covers trade in goods at the regional level, the TISIA provides a dedicated bilateral framework with Russia focused specifically on services and investment. It aims to bolster collaboration across various high-growth services sectors, including fintech, healthcare, transport, logistics and professional services. His Excellency Al Zeyoudi said the services and investment agreement with Russia, coupled with the recently signed Economic Partnership Agreement with the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, reflects a significant strengthening of our foreign trade network. This builds on the increasing value of UAE-Russia non-oil trade, which reached USD 11.5 billion in 2024, reflecting a 4.9% increase over 2023 and a 75.3% year-on-year rise in H1 2025. As the UAE continues to prioritize foreign trade and investment through its expanding Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) program, this TISIA represents the latest step in enhancing the nation's role as a global hub for trade. The agreement will not only create new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs but will also solidify the UAE and Russia's commitment to long-term economic collaboration. The CEPA program is a key pillar of the UAE's foreign trade agenda, which aims to increase non-oil foreign trade to US$1.1 trillion by 2031. In 2024, CEPAs contributed to the UAE's record non-oil trade of US$816 billion, marking a 14.6% year-on-year increase. The CEPA program is designed to drive economic growth by expanding opportunities for UAE businesses by enhancing access to high-growth markets around the world.

Canada sheds 40,800 jobs in July due to US tariffs
The Canadian economy lost thousands of jobs in July, sending the share of people employed in the population to an eight-month low, data showed on Friday, as the labour market gave back substantial gains seen in the prior month. The economy shed 40,800 jobs in the month, compared with a net addition of 83,000 jobs in June, taking the employment rate, or the percentage of people employed out of the total working-age population, to 60.7%, Statistics Canada said on Friday. The loss of jobs was concentrated among permanent employees, StatsCan said. The unemployment rate however remained steady at a multi-year high of 6.9%. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast the economy would add 13,500 jobs and the unemployment rate would tick up to 7%. US President Donald Trump's sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminium and autos have hit the manufacturing sector hard, and this has rippled across other sectors, reducing the hiring intentions of companies, the Bank of Canada has previously said. But the effects of tariffs have not yet spiraled into a total meltdown of the jobs market and employment in some areas has held up well, the data showed. Overall, there has been little net employment growth since the beginning of the year, StatsCan said, but clarified to say that the layoff rate was virtually unchanged at 1.1% in July compared with 12 months earlier. The bulk of the job losses occurred among younger age groups, primarily those between 15 and 24 years, whose unemployment rate edged up to 14.6%, the highest since September 2010 excluding the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. POLICY RATE The youth unemployment rate is usually higher than the country's average. The employment rate amongst this group, which accounts for around 15% of the total working-age population, sank to 53.6%, the lowest since November 1998 if the pandemic years are excluded. The Bank of Canada kept its key policy rate unchanged last week, partly due to a strong labour market, which has not shown signs of widespread weakening, but indicated it might reduce lending rates if inflation stays under control and economic growth weakens. Money market bets show odds of a rate cut at the next monetary policy meeting on September 17 at 38%, up 11 percentage points from Thursday. The Canadian dollar was trading down 0.07% to 1.3753 against the dollar, or 72.71 US cents. The biggest decline in employment in July was observed in information, culture and recreation, which lost 29,000 jobs, followed by 22,000 in construction and 19,000 in business, building and other support services. Employment rose in transportation and warehousing by more than 26,000, or a jump of 2.4%. The average hourly wage of permanent employees - a gauge closely tracked by the Bank of Canada to ascertain inflationary trends - grew by 3.5% in July to C$37.66 per hour, against a 3.2% increase the month before. TSX futures tick up as investors assess earnings, Fed board updates Aug 8 (Reuters) - Futures tied to Canada's main stock index edged higher on Friday, as investors monitored corporate earnings and US President Donald Trump's nomination for the open spot on the Federal Reserve's governing board. Futures on the S&P/TSX index rose 0.2% by 06:10 a.m. ET (1010 GMT). Trump said he would nominate Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to serve out the final months of the newly vacant seat while the White House looks for a permanent addition to the governing board and a new Fed Chair. Current Chair Jerome Powell's term ends in May 2026. In corporate earnings, Sun Life Financial posted a jump in second-quarter profit on Thursday, helped by a strong growth in its Asia unit as insurers expanded to tap into a growing market to offset the weakness in the US market. Ensign Energy's second-quarter net loss widened, driven by lower crude oil prices. Saputo reported quarterly adjusted earnings, with revenue and profit missing analysts' estimates. Gold miner IAMGOLD posted a rise in quarterly revenue, but missed expectations. Meanwhile, Ivey PMI data showed that Canadian economic activity expanded at the fastest pace in a year during July as employment rose. In commodities, US gold futures climbed to a record high after a report of US tariffs on gold bar imports, while spot gold prices steadied. Copper prices rose on a softer dollar and oil prices were stable. Agencies
