Andy Serkis wants to keep his Animal Farm adaptation full of 'innocence' to balance the book's darkness.
The 58-year-old actor and filmmaker is set to helm an animated take on George Orwell's dystopian fable – which tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human owner in the hope of creating a society where they can be free and equal.
He has now told Variety about why he chose animation as the format to tell the tale: 'We started to work on it and did a lot of experimenting, which led us to realize that animation was the right medium for this adaptation.
'That allowed us to keep the innocence of the storytelling that the original book had, while being able to say much more than live action would allow us to do. 'In live action, such a story would necessarily have been darker from the outset. Whereas with an animated movie, breaking those ties with reality and keeping Orwell's book, which he described as a fairy tale, in that realm gave us much more freedom to still have emotional engagement with the characters, keep it innocent, and then progressively let the darker themes come in underneath that.'
Andy added when asked what value the fable has in the context of today's troubled times: 'To really remember that truth is something to be valued. Honesty, selflessness as well.
'We have all become self-driven, and I think it's worth reminding ourselves that there is satisfaction to be had in working not for yourself but for the benefit of others.
'That all sounds very woolly and, in a way, utopian. But I do think that there are certain core human values that are slipping away, and I think that our story somehow questions that.'
Nicholas Stoller has adapted the screenplay for Andy's long-awaited movie, which had previously been set up at Netflix, and will produce with Adam Nagle, Dave Rosenbaum and Jonathan Cavendish.
Adam said in a statement announcing the project was underway: 'Ever since 1945, when George Orwell first published Animal Farm, the story has remained relevant and a key instrument in understanding how the world works.'

Merky Films aims to increase access to television and film for Afro-Caribbean and other underrepresented communities. Its stated mission is to champion new voices by creating projects that 'connect communities, celebrate culture and inspire meaningful change'. A development deal is already in place with Netflix to create multiple projects, including a 'powerful drama series' and a 'seminal biopic', with additional talks ongoing with other film companies. Speaking about the launch of #Merky Films, Stormzy added: 'I always say: music is my first love, but film is my second. #Merky Films is something I've been dreaming about for ages – a space for powerful British stories and a solid home for fresh, unexpected art. It's a natural next step for everything we do at #Merky – sharing our stories, spotlighting important voices and making room for those who deserve to be seen and heard.' He also expressed hope the company will help elevate new talent, adding: 'We always like to give that opportunity before the world latches on and catches up. 'I definitely, in 30 or 40 years' time, want to see whoever wins the best director of the year at the Oscars to say that the first thing they directed was for #Merky Films.' Footage exposes horror attack on Bridgerton star in London
Actress Genevieve Chenneour turned the tables on a notorious thief who tried to snatch her phone at a London coffee shop, dramatic footage shows. Chenneour, who played Clara Livingston in the third season of Netflix's hit series Bridgerton, said on Wednesday that she was left with a concussion after prolific London thug Zacariah Boulares, 18, attacked her at a Joe & the Juice in London's ritzy Kensington neighbourhood. Shocking footage obtained by The Post shows Chenneour, 27, confronting the convicted thief who snuck up behind her before snatching her phone on February 8. Chenneour wasted no time springing into action after Boulares — dressed in all black with a navy baseball cap — pounced to grab her device. The actress — a former Team GB artistic swimmer — put her arm out to block Boulares from leaving the premises, causing him to drop the phone on the floor. 'Crazy, watching the beginning of this footage, it gives me chills,' Chenneour wrote on her Instagram Story on Wednesday. After sharing several other clips of the ordeal with her 15,000 followers on the platform, the actress added, 'Man I feel sick watching this.' Another video showed her distressed Maltipoo pup during the physical brawl. 'My poor baby was screaming and barking. I now have a major issue with people touching me in front of him thanks to these c***s,' the Netflix star added. Chenneour previously opened up about the distressing incident in an interview with the Daily Mail, saying the thug 'didn't expect' her to fight back. 'I was left with a concussion just before the Screen Actors Guild Awards and since then, I've felt constantly on edge,' she told the outlet. 'I'm so grateful to the staff at Joe & The Juice — they were incredible during the incident and when I went back to see them after,' she added. Boulares has a long criminal record and previously served time for threatening to behead Welsh singer Aled Jones during a robbery in which he stole the singer's $23,000 Rolex in London. The then-16-year-old was sentenced to 24 months in custody for the attack in October 2023 but was released early after serving just 14 months. 'London has become increasingly dangerous, and this cannot be normalised. I'm not just speaking for myself — I'm speaking for every person who's had enough.' The Algerian national has since been involved in a series of criminal offences and has pleaded guilty to the attack on Chenneour, as well as the assault of another customer. The Metropolitan Police had identified Boulares in surveillance footage from the attack. He will be sentenced on June 17.

From The Queen's Gambit showrunner Scott Frank, the nine-part Netflix miniseries stars Goode as a one-man combination of good cop/bad cop. While Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck is a brilliant investigator, he is equally successful at annoying people - even begrudging respect for his talent quickly turns into intense dislike. Goode has been No. 1 on the call sheet before, but he didn't enjoy it: "It's something I shied away from after the beginning of my career where I was there for a bit and then I had some sort of bad things ... things weren't necessarily positive at that point, after that. And I just went, I just want to be, you know, not the lead any more".
