Singapore, Indonesia push for low-carbon, clean energy future with new sustainability MoUs
Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said in a statement that the three MoUs are on Cross-Border Electricity Trade (CBET), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and a Sustainable Industrial Zone (SIZ).
The MoUs were signed by Singapore's Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology, Dr Tan See Leng, and Indonesia's Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr Bahlil Lahadalia, during the former's visit to Jakarta, Indonesia.
Dr Tan said the MoU marks a significant milestone in Singapore's continued partnership with Indonesia under the Prabowo administration and reflects the resolve of both countries to pursue robust low-carbon and sustainability initiatives.
'These win-win partnerships will support both countries in achieving a resilient and low-carbon energy future, and generate new investments into green activities, while we do our part for global climate action,' he said in the statement.
MTI said the CBET MoU, which builds on previous MoUs on energy cooperation, will see both MTI and Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) aim to put in place the necessary policies, regulatory frameworks, and business arrangements for CBET within 12 months.
Meanwhile, under the CCS MoU, a joint working group will be set up to study components of a legally binding government-to-government agreement on CCS that will be necessary for implementing cross-border CCS projects.
Under the SIZ MoU, a joint task force will be established by MTI and ESDM to study the development of potential industries within the sustainable industrial zone (SIZ) in Bintan, Batam, and Karimun (BBK).
'The MoU reflects recognition by both countries of the importance of providing regulatory certainty for renewable energy projects, which will in turn create spin-off investments in Indonesia,' it added. — Bernama

Second senior Chinese diplomat held for questioning

(South China Morning Post) BEIJING : A deputy to a prominent Chinese diplomat being questioned by authorities was also detained, three people with knowledge of the matter said, a further sign of uncertainty in the top echelons of China's diplomacy. Sun Haiyan, a senior diplomat and former ambassador to Singapore, was detained in early August around the time Liu Jianchao, widely seen as a potential foreign minister candidate, was taken in for questioning, two of the people said. Sun, the first woman to serve as vice-minister of the Communist Party's international department, was detained by Chinese authorities in connection with the questioning of Liu, the sources said. None of the sources knew the basis of the questioning of either diplomat. The sources requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. The detention of Liu marked the highest-level disappearance of a diplomat since China ousted its former foreign minister and president Xi Jinping's protege, Qin Gang, in 2023, following an unexplained public absence. His detention followed a work trip to Singapore, South Africa and Algeria. His house was searched in early August. The disappearance of Sun, vice-minister of the Chinese Communist Party's international department, alongside the highly visible Liu, adds to questions about China's foreign policy establishment at a time of rising tensions with Washington around trade and geopolitical influence. China's state council information office, which handles media queries for the government, and the international department did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Reuters could not verify if both Sun and Liu were still being detained. Neither could be reached for comment. Both their profiles remain on the international department's website. Sun's last public appearance was on Aug 1, when she attended a reception hosted by Nepal's embassy in Beijing. Sun, 53, was stationed in Singapore between May 2022 and July 2023. When she left her post, she hosted a 500-person reception at a luxury Singapore hotel, according to Chinese news reports. She joined the international department in 1997, where she served in a wide range of roles, including spokesman and head of the bureau responsible for ties with Southeast Asian countries. She also served as a district party committee official in the city of Zibo, Shandong province, in 2008. DayOne To Build 1.2 Bln Euros Hyperscale Data Centre Campus In Lahti, Finland
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Singapore-based data centre developer and operator, DayOne has announced a landmark 1.2 billion euros investment to develop a hyperscale data centre campus in Lahti, marking one of Finland's most significant digital infrastructure projects to date. (1 Euro = RM4.90) DayOne Data Centers Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Khoo said Finland is an ideal strategic choice for the company's European growth. 'We are proud to invest 1.2 billion euros in the Lahti project into the Finnish economy and collaborate closely with Lahti to drive local innovation and sustainability,' said Khoo. The Lahti data centre project will transform a former industrial site, located in the neighbourhood of Kiveriö, into an advanced, high-performance digital infrastructure facility with the site that, spanning 98,901 square metres, is fully zoned for industrial usage. DayOne in a statement said construction will commence with site demolition in the third quarter this year, and operations are scheduled to be ready for service in 2027.
