Influencers blamed for rise in shark attacks

Independent26-04-2025
Social media influencers encouraging travellers to 'stroke' sharks are behind a rise in shark attacks, according to a new study.
The research, published in the journal Frontiers in Conservation, analysed records of shark encounters in the seas around French Polynesia and found that of the 74 recorded bites, five per cent were assessed as being defensive, occurring immediately after a human interaction perceived by the shark as threatening.
In addition, the team examined a global database known as the Shark Attack Files, which holds data about such incidents dating back to the 1800s.
Researchers found that more than 300 incidents fit the same defensive pattern.
Professor Eric Clua of PSL University in France, who led the research, claimed that social media was responsible for encouraging people to interact with sharks.
'I don't encourage, as many influencers do on social networks, [people] to cling to a shark's dorsal fin or stroke it, under the pretext of proving that they are harmless and [those people are] supposedly working for their conservation,' he said.
'People know the difference between a [Yorkshire terrier] and a pit bull, whereas they don't know the difference between a blacktip reef shark and a bull shark, which are their marine equivalents,' he told The Times.
'There's an incredibly negative perception bias towards sharks … they are responsible for fewer than ten human deaths a year worldwide, whereas dogs are responsible for more than 10,000 deaths and are perceived positively by the public.'
Celebrities who have posted clips of themselves touching sharks include actor Zac Efron, singer Ciara and the actor Bella Thorne.
Elsewhere, footage of divers handling sharks has gone viral, with some participants even grasping the nose of tiger sharks – a large apex predator that can grow to over five metres in length.
Taylor Cunningham is a social media influencer who posts footage of her swimming with and touching sharks, while conservationist Ocean Ramsay says 'we love to share rare moments of physical connection'.
While sharks have long had a fearful reputation, academics say such incidents tend to occur as a result of harangued sharks being poked and prodded by humans.
Professor Clua's advice to anyone who finds themselves swimming with a shark is: 'Don't touch.'
'Just look at it. Enjoy its beauty, but remember they are wild animals, predators that can act as predators. It is not only a matter of safety but also of respect.'

Emmerdale slapped with HUNDREDS of Ofcom complaints for homophobic abuse scenes - with viewers sobbing as character brutally beaten and conned out of cash

Emmerdale has been slapped with hundreds of Ofcom complaints after scenes of homophobic abuse. Viewers of the soap were left sobbing after character Vinny Dingle, played by Bradley Johnson, was brutally beaten before being conned out of money in a recent episode. In recent scenes, Vinny - who is engaged to a woman - expressed confusion over his sexuality and began speaking to a man who he met on an online support forum. And in an episode which aired last week, Vinny realised that Mike, the man had been talking to online, actually had a dark ulterior motive and ultimately showed up at Vinny's house before attacking, blackmailing and stealing from him. According to The Sun, 279 people contacted Ofcom with concerns over the episode, with the complaints objecting to 'violent and sexual content before the watershed'. Vinny had started speaking to Mike online after feeling confused about his sexuality. But out of the blue Mike turned up at Vinny's home, claiming that his girlfriend had thrown him out of the house. The situation took a dark turn when Mike started verbally abusing Vinny about his sexuality. Mike then attacked Vinny, brutally kicking and punching him and leaving him shaking on the floor. In an even more painful turn, Mike then forced Vinny to send him £10,000, blackmailing him with secret recordings he had taken of Vinny confessing to being confused about his sexuality. Vinny, who is engaged to female character Gabby Thomas, played by Rosie Bentham, felt he had no choice but to obey the demand. Mike also stole Vinny and Gabby's wedding rings, before making a run for it. Viewers were left in tears by the episode, with one writing: 'How powerful were the Vinny scenes last night? 'So sad seeing poor Vinny get beaten again - for nothing. He was being vulnerable and honest in who he is. Hope Mike gets his comeuppance!' 'I knew there was something fishy about that bloke when Vinny first met him. But I wish #emmerdale hadn't got as dark as this. I much prefer the old,' another said. Viewers were left in tears by the episode, with one writing: 'How powerful were the Vinny scenes last night?' It comes after a huge Emmerdale star quit the ITV soap - and will be written out as his character makes a 'fatal mistake that exposes their true colours'. Actor Oliver Farnworth, 43, has played John Sugden in the Dales since 2024. In recent weeks his alter-ego has been involved in a bit of drama, and last month Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) battered his long lost brother John to the ground in a brutal attack. Since Robert returned to the village earlier this year, the pair haven't seen eye to eye as John has tied the knot with Robert's ex Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). After 144 episodes on Emmerdale as the paramedic practitioner, he's ready to take on other roles. A source told The Sun: 'It's the beginning of the end for John. 'He's got away with so much but he's about to make a fatal mistake that sees him exposed for what he is. 'Obviously Oliver knew that a character like John had a shelf life and that's rapidly approaching.

Drama queen Star Wars actor makes vile wrist slitting analogy in his latest rant about Trump's election win

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill made an exaggerated reference to slitting his wrists when discussing Donald Trump winning the 2024 election in a recent interview. Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker for four decades, has become one of the most outspoken A-listers against the second Trump administration. In a wide-ranging interview with The Times, he stepped up his attacks against Trump and the people around him. 'The bullying, the incompetence, the people in place… The only way I can deal with it without going crazy and wanting to open my veins in a warm tub is to look at it like a thick, sprawling political novel,' Hamill said. 'It's entertaining in a way because this could actually be the end. Our status in the world has been crippled and that will reverberate for decades. 'Making Canada a 51st state? Do you know how offensive that is? And then taking over Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The distractions are hilarious,' he added. A vocal supporter of Joe Biden who then endorsed Kamala Harris in the election, Hamill has never been shy about sharing his dislike for Trump and criticized the president throughout his campaign last year. In the weeks after Trump was elected, Hamill said the date he won would 'live in infamy,' an allusion to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 that forced the United States to enter World War II. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was president at the time, described the Japanese bombing of the US Naval base as 'a date which will live in infamy'. He also took issue with Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia last August to commemorate the anniversary of the deaths of the 13 US service members killed during a 2021 bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan. Trump was seen posing with the families of the victims while smiling and giving a thumbs up. 'Nothing to see here. Just the tone-deaf draft dodger gleefully giving a thumbs-up at the graves of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,' Hamill wrote in response. In his latest interview, the outspoken Democrat expressed optimism and shared why he didn't leave the US after Trump's election victory. 'I still believe there are more honest, decent people than there are the MAGA crowd. If I didn't, I'd move back to England,' he quipped. He revealed that, at one point, he had considered emigrating like many other celebrities have since Trump retook the White House. He told The Times that he gave his wife, Marilou York, the option to move to London or Ireland. 'She's very clever,' Hamill said. 'She didn't respond right away but a week later she said, "I'm surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country." That son of a bitch, I thought. I'm not leaving.' Hamill and his wife live in Malibu, California. Their home was spared in the Los Angeles wildfires that burned for weeks in January. He was one of the thousands who had to evacuate amid the Palisades fire, which scorched more than 23,000 acres of land, destroyed nearly 7,000 structures and killed 12 people. A White House spokeswoman responded to Hamill and slammed him in a statement to Fox News. 'Since Mark has decided to stay in the United States, he will get to enjoy the many wins President Trump is securing for the American people - and really, who can blame him for seconding guessing a plan to move to the same place as Rosie O'Donnell,' the spokeswoman said. O'Donnell, Trump's arch nemesis from his days as a TV entertainer, revealed that she moved to Ireland full time in March. Eva Longoria, Courtney Love, and Ellen DeGeneres are among other celebrities who have fled the US in part because Trump became president again.

Quentin Tarantino's first ever play is coming to London

Are you one of those people who had a Pulp Fiction poster on your wall at uni, knows every line in Jackie Brown and has an unusual fixation with feet? We have some good news for you, because Quentin Tarantino's first ever play is coming to London. The director has revealed plans to open his debut play in the West End, and it may even be adapted into his final film. Tarantino said he was planning to move to England from Israel, where he currently lives, with his family next year to work on the play, which he anticipated would take up two years of his life. The director behind Kill Bill and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood told The Church of Tarantino podcast that the play, which is still untitled, will be a comedy. He kept it vague when he said he was open to his new work becoming his final cinematic project, but only if it is a success, or in Tarantino's words, if it's not 'a flop'. Tarantino has directed nine films, and in the past has said he only intends to make 10. The Times suggested that Tarantino's decision to stage the play on the West End instead of Broadway reflected the high costs of putting on productions in the States compared to the UK. He told The Church of Tarantino podcast: 'The play is all written, it is absolutely the next thing that I'm going to [do] and we will start the ball rolling on it in January.' He added: 'I'm preparing for it to be a success. If it is a flop, then I will be done very quickly.' Tarantino is currently living in Tel Aviv with his wife, singer Daniella Pick, and their two children. He said he plans to 'hang out' for the rest of the year before upping sticks for the Big Smoke. The best theatre in London for 2025.
