Sikhs seek tracks of faith, not just festival specials
Indian Railways
is reportedly conducting a feasibility study to connect the five Sikh Takhts—a move that could ease travel, reduce journey time, and allow devotees to visit at their convenience to fulfil their religious aspirations, as the current connectivity makes each journey difficult and full of inconveniences.
'The Five Takhts are the seats of Sikh power, history, and spiritual authority, but there is no direct connection between them,' said Sikh politico-religious observer S. Parshotam. . He said travel from Amritsar to Patna, Bathinda to Nanded, or Anandpur Sahib to Takht Damdama Sahib is a test of endurance—detours, delays, poor waiting facilities, and multiple connecting trains. "There is no straight route and no guaranteed service", added he.
Notably, Sikhs across India and abroad want to visit all five Takhts—not once in a lifetime, but when they choose. They wish to pay obeisance, fulfil religious duties, and stay rooted in the legacy of their Gurus, but the system doesn't allow it easily.
Stating that the Railways currently runs special trains only during major festivals or events—such as Gurpurabs and anniversaries—but this service is neither regular, reliable, nor sufficient, railway affairs expert P.C.

Sharma informed that a feasibility study is underway to establish city-to-city links, aimed at shortening travel time and increasing comfort. 'But plans don't carry passengers. Proposals don't reduce fatigue.
It has to translate on the ground,' he said.
A railways official here who didn't wish to give his name said, 'The extension of the Mumbai-Jalna Vande Bharat Express to Nanded represents a landmark achievement in improving connectivity to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib.
The Delhi-Amritsar Vande Bharat Express has revolutionised connectivity to the Golden Temple and Akal Takht, providing high-speed rail service that connects the national capital with Punjab's spiritual heart.
This service enables devotees from Delhi and Northern India to visit Amritsar with unprecedented comfort and efficiency.'
'What Sikhs are asking is simple. A regular rail service that links the five Takhts. Not luxury. Not tourism. Just respect for religious practice. Just a route that makes sense,' said Purshotam adding that despite an ongoing feasibility study , its report is yet to come.

Gangotri traders face Rs 50cr loss from disaster as 300 shops shut, tourism paralysed
Dehradun: Gangotri Dham, which draws lakhs of pilgrims every year during the Char Dham yatra, now stands empty and silent, with about 300 shops in its premises shut after a flash flood hit Dharali village, 20 km before the shrine. Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi, Gangotri remains cut off after stretches of road between the shrine and Bhatwari block, including a 200m section near Dabrani and a 600m stretch near Songad, were completely washed away. Communication lines are down, movement of essential goods has stopped, and the local economy is reeling. Suresh Semwal, secretary of the Gangotri Temple Samiti, told TOI on Tuesday, "To date, the possible loss is around Rs 50 crore, and it will only increase. All 300-odd shops in the temple premises have been shut, and many others, including purohits, mule and horse handlers, and daily wage workers, have been badly affected. It has been eight days since the disaster, and we don't know how long it will take for things to return to normal. " Over eight lakh pilgrims visited the shrine last year, and official data shows more than six lakh had come this year before the disaster. Somesh Singh Semwal, who runs a hotel, restaurant, and confectionery shop, said, "I earn around Rs 30,000 to 40,000 daily during this time every year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become Fluent in Any Language Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo Now it has gone down to zero." Many other businesses, including those selling prasad and traditional dress shops, are also facing heavy losses, with traders warning that prolonged closure could wipe out the yatra season for them entirely. Following the flash floods, around 1,200 tourists were evacuated from Gangotri and Harsil, officials said. NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and Indian Army teams continue search and rescue operations, with the govt on Tuesday releasing details of the two confirmed dead and the 66 — including 24 Nepalis — still missing. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Public Works Department (PWD), and other teams are also working to restore road connectivity, with BRO on Sunday completing a bailey bridge at Limchigadh after a vital 25m bridge connecting the road to Harsil was washed away in the Aug 5 flash flood. FASTag mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15
TIRUPATI: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has made FASTag, a Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) based system for e-toll collection in the prepaid digital format, mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala via the Alipiri tollgate from Aug 15. The Tirupati trust maintained that the decision was taken to provide better safety standards, prevention of overcrowding and transparent services to the devotees arriving in various vehicles at the Alipiri check point, FASTag will be made mandatory for the vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15 onwards. Clarifying that vehicles without FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala from Aug 15, TTD sources added that a FASTag issuance center has also been set up at the Alipiri check point for the convenience of those who do not have FASTag for their vehicles. TTD's vigilance and security wing clarified that the security frisking mechanisms in place at the Alipiri tollgate will remain as they are irrespective of the mode of toll-collection. While there are twin pedestrian routes leading to Tirumala, Alipiri happens to be the only gateway to Tirumala as far as vehicular traffic is concerned. It is at the Alipiri tollgate that the TTD collects two way toll-fees from vehicles plying along the twin ghat roads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Devotees have welcomed the Tirupati trust's move to facilitate digital payments through the FASTag, which will enable faster collection of the toll-fees without manual intervention, eventually leading to a hassle free passage following the security frisking at the Alipiri tollgate. Canadian influencer couple dies in off-roading crash in British Columbia
Source: X An influencer couple from Canada, known for their adventurous off-road travel videos, has died after a tragic accident in the British Columbia Interior. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans, creators of the YouTube channel Toyota World Runners with over 200,000 subscribers, were killed on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Kaslo Search and Rescue (SAR) confirmed to CBC that they were called to the crash site at around 7:30 p.m. local time. Rescuers believe the pair lost control of their vehicle while navigating rough terrain in the mountains near Trout Lake, B.C. Just days before the accident, they had shared what would become their final YouTube video, titled "VANCOUVER ISLAND | The Off-Road Version," which showed them camping in remote Canadian wilderness and testing their Toyota trucks on challenging trails. Mark Jennings-Bates, a manager with Kaslo SAR, told CBC: "So it was on a forestry road, somewhere in the mountains, and quite a long ways north in the valley up towards ... the village of Trout Lake [in the West Kootenay region of southeastern B.C.]. Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently. So that was very, very helpful. And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo " Jennings-Bates said one of the victims had no vital signs when crews arrived, while the other was airlifted to the hospital but later died. The cause of the crash is not confirmed, though he suspected 'a loss of control on rough terrain' as a possible factor. Tributes from family and fans Tourout's mother, Colleen, posted a heartfelt message on Facebook alongside a photograph of the couple in front of snow-covered mountains: "With unimaginable heartache, the families of Matthew Peter Yeomans and Stacey Tourout would like to advise that we lost them both tragically succumbing to injuries in an offroad accident on Aug 7, 2025 in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia that they loved so much. Please keep us and them in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this devastating end to an amazing Love Story. They are together forever as we knew they would always be." Per an old post dated April 12, 2023, Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans met each other 'because of an old Toyota.' They said their agenda was to drive the Cruiser Chinook truck they built in 100 days 'around the world, starting with the entire western hemisphere: The Pan American Highway.' According to Yeomans' Facebook profile, the couple got engaged in April 2024, sharing a video of the proposal with followers. Beyond YouTube, they also had a strong Instagram presence with nearly 74,000 followers. A description on their Toyota World Runners YouTube channel reads: "Matthew and Stacey built the world's first Land Cruiser Chinook in 100 days. Now set off on their journey to drive the Pan American and beyond, this is their story about the adventure, the personal growth, and choosing to LIVE life and create a legacy community of people who are seekers of the unknown. We are documenting our build, the trip plan, and hope to leave you with wisdom and inspiration for why we travel and how you can find fulfillment doing the same, in your own way. " Their final Instagram post, shared six days before the tragedy, featured photos from Vancouver Island and was captioned: "Really just soaking up all of these Vancouver island summer juices. Our first summer in a few years where we get to experience the seasons change and the joy the sun brings us soggy rainforest dogs as we come out of hiding."
