PMK criticises government over TN's poor JEE results
CHENNAI: Expressing concern over TN's poor JEE (Advanced) pass percentage, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the government to strengthen the state board school curriculum. His statement came following a TNIE report titled 'TN lags behind southern neighbours in JEE advanced pass percentage.' In a release on Wednesday, Anbumani highlighted that Tamil Nadu has slipped to the third-lowest position among states in the IIT-JEE (Advanced) 2025. He said the results have come as a jolt to the state, with only 1,859 of the 7,787 candidates from Tamil Nadu clearing the exam, translating to a pass rate of just 23.9%. Only Kerala and Bihar fared worse than TN. He said in stark contrast, West Bengal topped the list with a pass percentage of 35.3, followed by Punjab (34.7), Rajasthan (34.5), Maharashtra (32.4), and Haryana (32). The PMK blamed the government for failing to strengthen the state board syllabus to align with national standards.

Kozhikode: Nilambur bypoll campaign has turned into a war of words as opponents are using the remarks of senior leaders, including CM Pinarayi Vijayan and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, to attack each other. While UDF is using the CM's 'anti-Malappuram' remark from a media interview about gold smuggling and anti-national funding, LDF is hitting back by targeting Venugopal for comparing welfare pension payments to bribery before the elections. Venugopal first raked up the CM's Malappuram remarks during UDF's convention on Monday. Then opposition leader VD Satheesan and KPCC chief Sunny Joseph picked it up and accused CPM of having a prejudiced view about Malappuram. Satheesan stepped up the attack on Wednesday by saying it was Vijayan who made serious allegations against Malappuram. "The CM's PR team sent notes to all Delhi-based media claiming that Malappuram was a hub for gold smuggling and extremism. After that, he gave a newspaper interview that echoed Sangh Parivar's line. The CM and Sangh Parivar are walking the same path," he said. "We will speak out against the govt's attempts to exploit people's misery," he said. Satheesan said he is taking full responsibility for UDF's official stand in Nilambur. "The fight is between UDF and LDF and no one should try to distract voters from that. Not a single UDF vote will go elsewhere. Political and anti-govt votes will go to UDF. Even BJP is not serious about the contest. When the fight is between UDF and LDF, who else will get the anti-government votes? Nilambur voters are politically aware. Our majority will make that clear," he said.

IIT-Madras launches School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to boost startup ecosystem
The Indian Institute of Technology–Madras (IIT-M) has launched a School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to provide structured academic support for the creation of startups. 'Our goal is to emerge as the leading school for innovation and entrepreneurship in the next five years and put IITM on the map of entrepreneurial universities across the world,' Prabhu Rajagopal, Head, School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship told The Hindu. 'The goal is primarily to provide an academic footprint to the entrepreneurial activities that are going on inside the campus,' he added. According to Mr. Rajagopal, who is a serial faculty-entrepreneur and a faculty member of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the school will offer a wide range of academic and non-academic programs, cutting-edge research in innovation and entrepreneurship, and a distinctive lab-to-startup pathway through the MS in Entrepreneurship (to be offered from the July-November 2025 semester). 'We will bring all the innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives on campus under this school. For example, the Centre for Innovation (CFI) and Nirmaan will now come under the school,' he added. Plans are on anvil to create IITM-specific funding mechanisms at the initiation and scale-up stages for startups, to be housed under the banner of this school. Practice-led degrees at undergraduate and master's levels are also being envisaged. 'We are also looking at an 'Innovation Doctorate,'' Mr. Rajagopal said. 'Last year, IIT-M Director set an ambitious target of incubating 100 startups every year. And we have achieved it. But it can't be a one-time wonder – We need to be doing it on a regular basis every time. And that's why we need to provide academic support for entrepreneurship on campus,' he added. During the financial year 2024–25, IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) incubated 104 new startups. Over 50% of these startups were founded by IIT Madras members, including faculty, staff, students, and alumni, while 48% were founded by external entrepreneurs. Over the last 12 years, IITMIC has incubated a total of 457 deep-tech startups, collectively valued at over ₹50,000 crore.
