Elon Musk ‘sorry' after Starlink outage: What caused the massive satellite blackout worldwide

Time of India25-07-2025
Starlink, the world's most widely used
satellite internet
service, experienced a rare global outage that affected thousands of users across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The outage began late Wednesday night 11:00 PM GMT (4:30 AM IST) and lasted approximately two and a half hours. Users reported sudden loss of connectivity, slow speeds, and unresponsive terminals.
Elon Musk
, CEO of
SpaceX
, addressed the issue several hours later on X (formerly Twitter), attributing the outage to a configuration error during a routine software update. Although service has since been restored, the incident raises concerns about the resilience of satellite-based internet systems amid increasing reliance on them for communication, navigation, and defense.
What caused Starlink's Global outage
According to statements from SpaceX engineers, the outage was caused by a failure in key internal software services that operate the core Starlink network. The error occurred during a routine software update intended to improve inter-satellite communication performance and latency. However, this update introduced a critical misconfiguration that disrupted how satellites relay data to one another. As a result, communication links between satellites degraded and many ground terminals lost connection to the broader internet. Elon Musk described the incident as a "cascading failure triggered by a single node update" and called the situation embarrassing but fixable. Starlink's Vice President of Engineering, Michael Nicolls, confirmed the cause on X and apologized for the disruption.
Who was affected by the Starlink outage
The outage was widespread, impacting both civilian and commercial users. Airlines relying on Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi, rural communities in North America, military installations, remote research stations, maritime users, and RV owners all experienced connectivity interruptions. The outage monitoring website Downdetector logged over 60,000 user complaints globally at the peak of the disruption.
SpaceX response to the Global service disruption
SpaceX engineers identified the problem and issued an emergency patch within about three hours. Elon Musk publicly apologized on X, stating, 'Apologies for the inconvenience. A software update went wrong, but we've fixed it.' Service restoration began around 21:31 UTC, and normal functionality was largely recovered by 21:40 UTC on July 24, 2025.
What are the risk of recurrence
While Starlink's service has proven reliable in the past, particularly in conflict zones like Ukraine, experts acknowledge that its reliance on centralized control and automated software updates introduces vulnerabilities to software bugs. SpaceX has announced plans to implement multi-layer rollback mechanisms and more rigorous testing protocols to minimize the risk of similar events in the future.
Growing importance of Starlink
Starlink now serves over 6 million users across 140 countries, offering critical connectivity to underserved regions. Its network supports government agencies, airlines, shipping companies, and military operations. Any disruption, even short-lived, highlights the global significance of satellite internet infrastructure in an increasingly connected world.

After first India showroom, Tesla's ‘supercharging' station in Mumbai from Aug 4

Weeks after kicking off its operations in India, Tesla is now gearing up for its 'supercharging' station, that roll out on Monday, August 4. Tesla's first India showroom was opened last month in Mumbai. Tesla owners can plug in their vehicles and check stall availability through the Tesla app. (REUTERS) With operations set to start in Delhi as well, the Elon Musk-led company is working towards launching its charging station at One BKC in Mumbai from August 4. As per reports, the charging station will include four V4 Supercharging stalls (DC chargers) and four Destination Charging stalls (AC chargers). The superchargers will offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW at ₹24 per kWh. The AC chargers will be priced at ₹11 per kWh with an 11 kW charging speed. Tesla said the "Model Y can add up to 267 kilometres of range in just 15 minutes with Tesla superchargers, enough for five return trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai and Gateway of India". The Tesla Model Y is available in India in two versions, RWD and Long Range RWD. The RWD version is priced at ₹59.89 lakh and the long range model costs ₹67.89 lakh. The on road prices are ₹61.07 lakh and ₹69.15 lakh respectively. The RWD variant is offered with a 60 kWh or 75 kWh battery pack. It runs on a single motor generating around 295 hp. The 60 kWh battery has a claimed WLTP range of 500 km, while the long range version offers up to 622 km on a full charge. According to Reuters, the company had put its India entry plans on hold in 2022 but restarted efforts last year, looking for showroom space in major cities. Its launch comes as Tesla deals with falling global sales and growing competition in the EV market.

Bad news for Elon Musk as Tesla asked to pay Rs 21190320470 for..., company's autopilot tech under fire due to...

Elon Musk (File) Tesla accident: In a major setback for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a US court has ordered the automaker to pay a whopping $243 million (about Rs 2,119 crore) to victims of a fatal 2019 accident, which was reportedly caused by a malfunction in the Tesla's patented autopilot driver-assistant technology. What did the victims say? The families of the victims have accused Tesla's autopilot system of being partly responsible for the crash that left 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon dead, while her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo sustained grievous injuries. According to the prosecution, the Tesla car, which was on Autopilot, collided with the victims' vehicle, which parked on the roadside as the young couple were star gazing late at night. The Tesla driver confessed he was distracted by his cell phone, but the jury believes that Tesla's malfunctioning autopilot tech was also partly responsible for the tragedy, and must pay damages to the victims. How much damages will Tesla pay? As per the court order, Tesla has been ordered to pay $200 million in punitive damages and $59 million in compensatory damages to Leon's family, while Angulo was awarded a $70 million compensation. The court observed that moral responsibility must be imposed if and when a tragedy is caused by technology malfunction, such as the failure of a driver-assist or autopilot system. It noted that companies must shoulder responsibility in such cases, even if human-error is involved. Notably, its believed that Tesla has previously settled similar cases out of court or had them dismissed before trial, however, this case breaks that pattern, and will encourage others to seek justice against big corporations. Did Tesla bury evidence of malfunction? Meanwhile, the victims' counsel also accused Elon Musk-led Tesla of hiding crucial evidence in the case, including video and data recorded moments before the fatal accident. Tesla told the court that the video footage did not exist, but a forensic expert managed to dig up the data, following which the company termed it as an 'honest mistake'. Why is this a concern for Elon Musk? The court order against Tesla comes at a time when Elon Musk is preparing to launch a fleet of driverless Tesla taxis in several US cities. The court ruling also brings Tesla's autopilot system, which it claimed has been improved since the 2019 accident, under further scrutiny.
