'Australian skinks have evolved tiny changes in a critical muscle receptor, called the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. This receptor is normally the target of neurotoxins which bind to it and block nerve-muscle communication causing rapid paralysis and death. But in a stunning example of a natural counterpunch, we found that on 25 occasions skinks independently developed mutations at that binding site to block venom from attaching,' said Professor Bryan Fry, lead author and UQ zoologist.
Some mutations add sugar molecules to the receptor, physically blocking toxins. Others substitute specific amino acids—most notably arginine at position 187—creating a resistant muscle site. These adaptations were validated through experiments simulating venom attacks; in some cases, the modified receptors didn't respond to venom at all.
Convergent evolution: Molecular armor across species
The study astonishingly revealed that the Major Skink shares the same mutation found in honey badgers, famous for their resistance to
cobra venom
, and in mongooses that prey on venomous snakes. This recurring molecular defense across distant species shows the immense evolutionary pressure exerted by snake venom and highlights 'convergent evolution'—nature repeatedly finds the same solution to the same lethal problem.
Path to new antivenoms
The implications of these findings are profound. By understanding exactly how skinks neutralize venom, scientists may develop novel antivenoms and therapies for neurotoxic snakebites in humans. First author Dr. Uthpala Chandrasekara, who led laboratory tests, noted:

From recovery to independence: Amar Seva Sangam hosts annual spinal cord injury reunion
Amar Seva Sangam, organised a two-day reunion for rehabilitated persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in which resource persons and experts shared their views and latest updates. According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, the two-day event brought together former beneficiaries from across Tamil Nadu, offering a platform for learning, sharing, and emotional renewal. The 20-bed rehabilitation facility at the Amar Seva Sangam provides post-acute care for persons with SCI, including mobility and self-care training, transfer and wheelchair skills, vocational rehabilitation, counselling, and follow-up home visits. Since its inception, more than 250 persons have been rehabilitated, with many achieving independence and sustainable livelihoods. This year's meet featured a series of technical sessions including bladder and bowel management; women's health – sexual and reproductive life and ageing and pressure sore management by Sumitha Gounden, a renowned Australian SCI physician. A medical camp was organised with the participation of specialists including neurologists, urologists, and cardiologists offering on-the-spot consultations. Participants also benefited from individual and group counselling given by M.S Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation. The programme was conducted under the guidance of founder president Padmashri S. Ramakrishnan and S. Sankara Raman promoter, co-chairman and secretary, the note added.

Study Reveals Impact Of Heat Extremes On Tropical Birds' Populations
Sydney: Climate change-driven heat extremes have wiped out 25-38 per cent of tropical bird populations since 1950, according to a study involving Australian scientists. The study found that while shifts in average temperature and rainfall have some influence, the biggest climate threat to birds, particularly in tropical regions, comes from exposure to extreme heat, according to an analysis released Tuesday on the University of Queensland website. Australian and European researchers analysed over 3,000 bird populations from 1950-2020, using weather data to separate climate impacts from human pressures such as habitat loss, in a dataset of 90,000 observations from all continents, it said. The research, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, confirmed the work of other climate scientists showing extreme heat events have increased dramatically over the past 70 years, especially near the equator, Xinhua News Agency reported. Birds in tropical regions are now experiencing dangerously hot days about ten times more often than they did in the past, researchers have found. Surviving birds may suffer lasting damage, including organ failure and reduced breeding success, as extreme heat lowers body condition, limits foraging, stresses eggs and chicks, and can cause dehydration or nest abandonment, the study showed. Researchers warned that even remote, protected tropical forests untouched by humans are seeing heat-driven bird declines, with climate impacts outweighing direct human pressures. Given that nearly half of all bird species are found in tropical regions, the findings signal a major threat to global biodiversity and urge urgent emission cuts and habitat protection to conserve species. Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned that extreme heat is impacting millions of people around the world, with wildfires and poor air quality compounding the problem, highlighting the importance of early warning and heat-health action plans. WMO issued a bulletin on August 7, stating that data from its members show increasingly frequent global heatwaves and record-breaking temperatures in many regions. According to the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service, July 2025 was the third-warmest July globally (after July 2023 and July 2024). The average sea surface temperature was also the third-highest on record. Arctic sea ice extent ranked joint second-lowest for July in the 47-year satellite record, virtually tied with 2012 and 2021. In July, within Europe, heatwave conditions particularly affected Sweden and Finland, which experienced an unusually long spell of temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. Southeast Europe also faced heatwaves and wildfire activity.

However, scientific investigations have now demystified these events. Australian scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki attributes the disappearances primarily to severe weather and human error. Experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United States Coast Guard support this view. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stated in 2010: 'There is no evidence that ships and planes disappear mysteriously in the Bermuda Triangle more frequently than in other large ocean areas." What Really Happens? Since 2017, Dr Kruszelnicki has emphasised that these incidents occur at normal rates due to the heavy traffic and challenging navigation in the area. NOAA further explains that environmental factors such as sudden weather changes caused by the Gulf Stream, a complex maze of Caribbean islands, and rare magnetic anomalies affecting compasses account for most disappearances. The Most Famous Incident: Flight 19 One of the most renowned cases is the disappearance of US Flight 19 in 1945 where five US Navy bombers were lost over the Bermuda Triangle. Theories suggest bad weather, navigational errors, or both as likely causes. Despite scientific explanations, conspiracy theories persist, fuelled by books, TV shows, and films that find sea monsters and lost civilisations more thrilling than meteorology and statistics. The Bass Strait Triangle Mysteries The Bass Strait Triangle, the treacherous waters between mainland Australia and Tasmania, also harbours a dark history of unexplained disappearances. The most infamous case is that of 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich in 1978. While flying a Cessna 182L from Moorabbin, Victoria, to King Island, Valentich reported seeing a 'strange, metallic object" above him before radio contact was lost, and he was never found. Other Notable Disappearances In 1973, the cargo ship MV Blythe Star vanished suddenly. Some crew survived, and parts of the ship were recovered, but its disappearance added to the region's eerie reputation. The 1797 disappearance of the ship Sloop Eliza while salvaging wreckage from Sydney Cove remains unexplained. Between 1838 and 1840, at least seven ships bound for Melbourne went missing, with wreckage found for only three. In 1858, the British warship HMS Sappho, carrying over 100 people, disappeared without substantial wreckage. The coal ship SS Federal vanished in 1901; its wreck was only discovered in 2019. The German cargo ship SS Ferdinand Fischer disappeared without trace in 1906. In 1920, the schooner Amelia J disappeared, followed by the loss of the barkentine Southern Cross and a military aircraft searching for it. In 1934, the De Havilland Express plane Miss Hobart vanished shortly after takeoff.
