Residents of villages surrounding Tiruppur Corporation on Friday pushed for adoption of a resolution at the Grama Sabha meeting conducted as part of Independence Day celebration to prevent any move by the civic body to dump unsegregated wastes in abandoned quarries.
The resolution said the act of the Tiruppur Corporation amounted to violation of entitlement of citizens to unpolluted environment enshrined in the Constitution.
The dumping of wastes had caused pollution of soil and water and burning of the wastes had caused air pollution, said R. Satish Kumar, State Secretary of the Legal Wing of Tamilnadu Farmers' Protection Association.
The resolution urged the Corporation to pay compensation to the village panchayats for having caused air, water and soil pollution through the dumping of wastes in the quarries.
Other resolutions highlighted by the participants of Grama Sabha meetings encompassed replacement of palm oil with coconut or gingelly oil for distribution to the public through fair price shops; fixation of adequate Minimum Support Price for farm produces; empowering village panchayats to handle wild boar menace; dovetailing of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for giving a thrust to farming; adequate godown infrastructure at procurement centres; raising of per-kg raising charges for broiler chicken to ₹15; waiver of farm loans by Central Cooperative Banks; fixation of ₹50 per litre for cow milk and ₹75 for buffalo milk; exemption of agriculture from international agreements; use of genetically modified crops only after bio-safety tests; and restoration of basic customs duty on crude and refined vegetable oils to 20%.

Farmers to lay siege to Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha on August 20 over sugarcane dues, pricing issues

Bengaluru is set to witness a major farmers' protest on August 20, as members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers' Association announced plans to lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha, pressing the government to meet their long-pending demands, reported The Hindu. Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha. Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru on Saturday, H. Bhagyaraj, president of the sugarcane growers' association, said farmers would also stage a 'satyagraha' at Freedom Park on the same day. Although the nation marked Independence Day on August 15, farmers had little to celebrate, Bhagyaraj remarked, accusing the government of failing to ensure scientific pricing for agricultural produce. He demanded that the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for the 2025-26 season be fixed at ₹4,500 per tonne, with harvesting and transportation costs borne by sugar factories. They insisted that factories should install weighing machines in open view so farmers could monitor the process themselves. The association further alleged that sugar mills owe farmers a staggering ₹950 crore in pending dues, and urged the government to clear these payments immediately. On the issue of fertiliser shortage, Bhagyaraj accused both the State and Centre of politicising the matter. He demanded that authorities ensure smooth supply and act strictly against traders who create artificial scarcity by hoarding stocks or selling them above the official price. New connectivity of UER-II and Dwarka Expressway will ease lives of NCR people, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined the need to transform New Delhi into a 'Vikas Model' (development model), saying the national capital should embody the aspirations of a nation determined to become 'Viksit (developed)'. Addressing a large public gathering during the inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), PM Modi congratulated residents of the national capital on the occasion. He mentioned that the farmers and labourers would be the ones who would get the most benefits from the newly constructed projects. He drew a cultural connection while noting, "The highway is named Dwarka Expressway, the name of the place is Rohini, the occasion is Janmashtami, and by coincidence, I am also from the land of Dwarkadeesh. Poora mahaul bahot Krishnamay ho gaya hai (the entire atmosphere is filled with devotion towards Lord Krishna)". Emphasising the importance of the new infrastructure, he said, "Delhi got the connectivity of UER-II and Dwarka Expressway, which will ease the lives of the people of the NCR. Travelling to offices will become easy, and it will save a lot of time. Our farmers, labourers and businessmen will benefit a lot from it." Linking the projects to his Independence Day address, PM Modi said India's economic momentum is being recognised globally. "The entire world knows what the new India is thinking, it is aspiring to be, what its resolutions are. When the world sees India, the first thing they think about is our capital, Delhi. This is why we have to make Delhi a 'Vikas Model', which shows that it is the Capital of India, which is aspiring to become 'Viksit'," he said. Reflecting on the government's efforts over the past 11 years, the Prime Minister said the BJP-led Centre has been "relentlessly" working on multiple fronts to develop Delhi. Citing examples of infrastructure, he added, "Take connectivity, for instance. In the last decade, the connectivity in Delhi-NCR has seen historic progress. From modern and wide expressways to one of the world's largest metro networks and Namo Bharat. This shows how ease of connectivity has been put in place in Delhi-NCR." Earlier in the day, PM Modi held a massive roadshow at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Village Toll Plaza in the national capital, just hours before the inauguration of two major highway projects. Hundreds of people thronged the roadsides to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister as he greeted the crowd. During the visit, he also interacted with the workers engaged in the construction of the highway section, acknowledging their efforts in shaping the project. The Prime Minister reviewed the progress of UER-II alongside Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
