Villagers push for resolution on preventing utilisation of abandoned quarries in Tiruppur as dump yards at Grama Sabha meetings
Residents of villages surrounding Tiruppur Corporation on Friday pushed for adoption of a resolution at the Grama Sabha meeting conducted as part of Independence Day celebration to prevent any move by the civic body to dump unsegregated wastes in abandoned quarries. The resolution said the act of the Tiruppur Corporation amounted to violation of entitlement of citizens to unpolluted environment enshrined in the Constitution. The dumping of wastes had caused pollution of soil and water and burning of the wastes had caused air pollution, said R. Satish Kumar, State Secretary of the Legal Wing of Tamilnadu Farmers' Protection Association. The resolution urged the Corporation to pay compensation to the village panchayats for having caused air, water and soil pollution through the dumping of wastes in the quarries. Other resolutions highlighted by the participants of Grama Sabha meetings encompassed replacement of palm oil with coconut or gingelly oil for distribution to the public through fair price shops; fixation of adequate Minimum Support Price for farm produces; empowering village panchayats to handle wild boar menace; dovetailing of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for giving a thrust to farming; adequate godown infrastructure at procurement centres; raising of per-kg raising charges for broiler chicken to ₹15; waiver of farm loans by Central Cooperative Banks; fixation of ₹50 per litre for cow milk and ₹75 for buffalo milk; exemption of agriculture from international agreements; use of genetically modified crops only after bio-safety tests; and restoration of basic customs duty on crude and refined vegetable oils to 20%.

Ryots protest against second phase land pooling in Andhra
GUNTUR: Tension flared in Ponnekallu village of Tadikonda mandal on Saturday when a group of villagers staged a protest during a Grama Sabha. It may be recalled that the State government has commenced the second phase of land pooling for Amaravati's development, and the Grama Sabhas are being held in Tadikonda mandal to gather farmers' views. The meeting, attended by Tadikonda MLA Sravan Kumar and officials, was disrupted by protestors who raised slogans such as 'Go back,' opposing the proposed land acquisition and alleging a lack of transparency. The meeting was halted. Guntur RDO K Srinivasa Rao told TNIE that a few farmers disrupted the session with 'ulterior motives'. However, he said that Grama Sabhas in nearby villages such as Nekkallu and Tadikapadu were conducted peacefully, with most farmers agreeing to part with their land. Grama Sabhas were completed in the other nine villages of the mandal. While supporting the land pooling initiative, many farmers raised concerns regarding loan waivers on pledged lands, an increase in annual lease payments, and a 15-year lease period, similar to what was offered during the first phase. MLA Sravan Kumar assured the farmers that their concerns would be brought to the Chief Minister's attention and that suitable steps would be taken after due consideration.
