MNS says it expects concrete proposal from Shiv Sena (UBT) on alliance after past ‘betrayal'
Local body elections in Maharashtra, including for civic corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur and Pune, among others, are slated to be held later this year.
Speaking to reporters here, MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande referred to party president Raj Thackeray's recent interview where he signalled openness to have discussions with the Shiv Sena (UBT), headed by his estranged cousin Uddhav Thackeray, for a political alliance.
Mumbai, May 22 (PTI) A senior Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader on Thursday said his chief Raj Thackeray would consider an alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT) only if a concrete proposal is put forward, noting previous overtures from his party for a tie-up were met with 'betrayal'.
'If the Shiv Sena (UBT) feels an alliance with the MNS is possible, they should come forward with a substantial proposal. Raj Thackeray will take a decision on it,' he maintained.
Deshpande recalled past instances when the MNS had initiated tie-up talks, but faced what he called 'betrayal'.
'Be it in 2014 or 2017, we sent proposals but they betrayed us. If they want us now, they must send a proper proposal to Raj Thackeray. He will take an appropriate call,' he asserted.
He insisted that Raj Thackeray, in his interview, had not explicitly endorsed a political alliance with the Uddhav-led outfit, a constituent of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
'Raj did not say an alliance must take place. He only said that if the Shiv Sena (UBT) is interested (for a tie-up), he will consider it,' Deshpande opined.
In a reply to a question, Deshpande said at present no official communication has been received from the ruling Shiv Sena for an understanding with his party.
He was asked whether the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a part of the ruling Mahayuti coalition, was also seeking an understanding with the MNS.
Last month, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation with statements indicating they could ignore 'trivial issues' and join hands in the larger interest of 'Marathi manoos' (Marathi-speaking people), nearly two decades after a bitter parting of ways.
Raj Thackeray quit the undivided Shiv Sena in 2005 and floated his own party the next year. In the past, he has allied with the BJP, a bitter rival of the Shiv Sena (UBT). PTI ND RSY

Tipra Motha demands immediate detection, deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Tripura
The Tipra Motha – a constituent of the ruling BJP-led alliance – has demanded the detection and deportation of all illegal migrants from Bangladesh residing in Tripura. A four-member delegation of the party, led by MLA Ranjit Debbarma, met Governor N Indrasena Reddy and raised the demand on Friday. 'We met the Governor today. The issue is that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has stipulated a 30-day timeframe to start the process of detection and deportation of illegal migrants in Tripura. In other states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Assam, the process has already started. We have demanded that the process be started in Tripura too,' Debbarma told reporters after meeting Governor Reddy. He added that a similar kind of notification was also issued in 2017. The Tipra Motha leader said that not only the illegal migrants, but also those providing shelter to them, must be brought under the purview of the law. Earlier, Debbarma wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals, urging him to push them back. The Twipra Students' Federation (TSF) has also demanded that the government start the process of detecting and deporting Bangladeshi migrants staying illegally in the state. 'We have seen that other states are doing it. But the Tripura government is silent. We appeal to the government to take strong initiative regarding the notification. We have started the 'clean and drive illegal migrants mission' from today,' Hamal Jamatia, General Secretary, TSF, said. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons, and two Nigerians were arrested between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year for staying illegally in Tripura. A further breakup of the data shows that 483 illegal foreigners were arrested from August 5, 2024, when the Sheikh Hasina government fell in Bangladesh.

Delay of Eknath Shinde's chartered flight aids kidney patient's timely airlift to Mumbai
Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's take off from Jalgaon to Mumbai on Friday night was delayed as pilot of the chartered flight initially refused to fly owing to the breach of scheduled flying hours. The flight eventually took off after fresh permission was taken and he was persuaded by the ruling party leaders. Shinde's office, however, said that delay helped them airlift a kidney failure patient who could reach Mumbai in time for her transplant. Shinde was in Jalgaon to attend 'Palkhi Yatra' of Sant Muktai in Muktainagar on Friday evening. His schedule was delayed and when he came to the airport for his journey to Mumbai, the pilot pointed at the delay in scheduled flying and rules of the duty hours for the pilots. Gulabrao Patil, water supply and sanitation minister, and Shiv Sena leader said that the pilot did not refuse to fly, instead, there was some technical problem related to his duty hours delaying the flying. 'He had completed eight hours and 45 minutes of nine hours of his duty hours, and said he could not fly without the permission from the authorities. He then spoke to his company, which sought the permissions from the authorities. After the permission, Shinde saheb flew by 9.45pm from Jalgaon airport,' Patil said. Patil further added that delay helped them airlift a kidney patient from Jalgaon. 'The patient had to be admitted to a Mumbai hospital by midnight for a kidney transplant. The patient had missed her flight and would have missed her claim over kidney in case of delay in hospital admission. The delay to Shinde proved a 'blessing in disguise',' he said. The minister said that Shinde was delayed to take off as he arrived late in Jalgaon in the afternoon because of delay to take off from Pune owing to bad weather. The statement issued by Shinde's office, has stated that the delay helped a kidney patient in getting her admitted to the Mumbai office. 'The relatives of the patients contacted Shinde through water resources minister Girish Mahajan for the airlifting of the patient Sheetal Borade." 'Shinde asked two of his party workers to stayback to accommodate Borade and her husband on the flight. Shinde not only took them on the board, but also asked to arrange a special ambulance at the Mumbai airport,' it reads. Girish Mahajan said that the pilot had a health related issue and was convinced after they spoke to the company that owned the aircraft. Borade family has thanked Shinde for the timely help.
