Coachtopia, Bank & Vogue collab moves from bags to clothing

Coachtopia continues to be one of the most interesting sustainability initiatives from a major brand and Beyond Retro's parent company Bank & Vogue continues to be one of the most important global players in secondhand and upcycled fashion.
So when the two return for a second collaboration, it's bound to make waves.
They've move on from their bags collab (which only debuted in March) and have now produced a clothing capsule. It's a limited-edition Patchwork Edit that 'champions reuse and reimagination by transforming pre-loved garments into striking, one-of-a-kind pieces'.
Using components from discarded textiles, the Patchwork striped shirt and trousers avoid the creation of new materials, 'underscoring both brands' commitment to reducing fashion waste'. The lightweight set is designed for everyday wear and no two pieces are the same. Each shirt and trouser set feature its own combination of patterns and colours, 'celebrating the uniqueness of the upcycled materials used in their construction'.
Catch said that 'this collaboration is part of Coachtopia's ongoing mission to rethink waste and reimagine fashion through the lens of circularity, creativity, and community'.
Coachtopia first launched in spring 2023 and saw Coach rethinking the way it makes bags. Targeting young consumers, it's priced a little below the regular Coach offer and makes the most of surplus materials. It saw the company completely rethinking the product process with new bags made from the leftover materials that usually go straight to landfill and were previously seen as unusable.
Bank & Vogue meanwhile, as parent company of Beyond Retro, is behind the biggest European secondhand fashion operation. But it goes further than that and the company led by Steven Bethell (who lives off the grid in the Canadian wilderness in his spare time) also operates the largest remanufacturing plant in the world. It takes post-consumer waste and transforms it into relevant products, working with big brands to help them bring their sustainability platforms to the next level.

The fashion sector is undeniably the source of a huge amount of waste and it's an issue that isn't only one for fast-fashion producers to solve (even though they're the companies that receive the most criticism on the subject). It's also an issue that puts the wider fashion sector increasingly under the spotlight for both regulators and ever-more-eco-conscious consumers. But as well as aiming to cut down on waste, the industry needs to deal with the problem of resources becoming more scarce due to climate change affecting the locations in which they're produced and work to avoid the huge drain on resources that materials production entails, as well as guaranteeing that those who produce them are treated fairly. Nevold will reportedly address this. Old-style solutions simply aren't acceptable these days (think of the furore surrounding news that Burberry was burning unsold stock a few years ago). And some companies are opting for creative ways to address the problem, such as Coach with its Coachtopia line. Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion at Chanel told Vogue Business: 'We started by asking ourselves what happens to the materials that don't make it into a final product, or those that reach the end of their first life. At Chanel, we didn't destroy unsold products. But we also didn't yet have a real system to understand their full potential. Nevold is that system.' It will be interesting to see how Nevold develops in the months and year ahead.

'The EU needs to invest more at home'

The European Union is the world's third-largest economy with one of the highest household saving rates, yet when our companies are scaling up, they often turn to financial markets abroad. Why? Because we export much of our vast savings, supporting innovation elsewhere, while many of our own start-ups struggle to access the necessary funding to grow. The time has come for change and the EU needs to invest more at home. That is why seven European countries representing more than half of the EU economic output teamed up on Thursday, June 5, to channel these savings into investment in our continent's economy. Let's first consider the numbers. In 2024, the EU economy generated €17.9 trillion in output. Wealth and value are therefore evidently created in Europe at a very large scale. Meanwhile, European households are some of the greatest savers in the world, setting aside about 13% of their income every year, five points more than American households. That represents €1 trillion of new private savings every year, much of which sits idle in cash or deposit accounts earning low returns. In total, this has created a pool of capital of €35 trillion over the years. Meanwhile, Europe needs to invest at least 5% of its economy, or up to €800 billion a year, to close its technology and productivity gap with major competitors. Add new defense and security needs and that figure could easily surpass €1 trillion. In this time of rising geopolitical tension and increasing barriers to trade and financial flows around the globe, these savings are a strategic asset for Europe that we must mobilize to help fill that investment shortfall. Accelerating integration Vital work is being done to improve the integration of our capital markets. The European Commission also put forward its strategy for a Savings and Investment Union in March.
