Chargers cornerstone lineman Rashawn Slater goes down at camp with injury, weeks after landing new contract

Los Angeles Chargers All-Pro offensive lineman Rashawn Slater left Thursday's practice on the back of a medical cart after apparently injuring his left leg. The Chargers did not immediately provide an update on Slater's status. Defensive coordinator Jesse Mint said he didn't see the play in which Slater was hurt. Keenan Allen, who recently rejoined the Chargers, said he also missed the moment his teammate got hurt. "I was in on the play, so I turned around, and he was down. I didn't know what happened," Allen said. Before the cart left the field, Slater's teammates offered hugs and well-wishes. "We're praying for him, man. We hope he's doing well," outside linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu said. "That's just something you don't want to see." The scary moment happened less than two weeks after Slater inked a lucrative contract extension with the Chargers. The durable Slater is credited with 52 career starts since being drafted in the first round in 2021. He's anchored a Chargers' offensive line that's helped protect star quarterback Justin Herbert the past few seasons. Last season, with Slater's presence, the offense commited just eight turnovers, a franchise-record low. The Chargers tied for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history.

Chargers star LT Rashawn Slater (patellar tendon) to miss '25 season

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater will miss the 2025 season after tearing the patellar tendon in his left leg during Thursday's practice. The Chargers said Slater will undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve. The serious injury comes just 11 days after Slater signed a four-year, $114 million deal to become the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. Slater, 26, was injured during a drill in which he was engaged in pass protection against Chargers defensive end Tuli Tuipulotu. Tuipulotu crashed into Slater as Slater planted his foot and then his left leg gave out. Slater fell to the turf and grabbed his left knee. A short time later, Slater was carted off the field. "I didn't really see nothing," Tuipulotu told reporters, according to The Athletic. "I kind of just turned around, and then, boom. We're praying for him. We hope he's doing well, and, man, everybody's behind his back, everybody's got him. Wishing for the best." A two-time Pro Bowl selection, and a first-round pick (13th overall) by the Chargers in the 2021 NFL Draft, Slater has started all 51 of the games in which he has played, including 15 last season. He was limited to just three games in 2022 due to a ruptured biceps tendon. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2024 and was named second-team All-Pro in 2021. Joe Alt moved across the line to handle the left tackle duties and he figures to remain there for the 2025 season. Alt was the fifth overall pick of the 2024 draft after starring at the position for Notre Dame. Trey Pipkins III worked at right tackle after the injury. He is entering his seventh season with the Chargers and has been a starter for the last three campaigns. He was the team's main right tackle in 2022. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Rashawn Slater tears patellar tendon: What's his timeline to return?

The Los Angeles Chargers were bracing for bad news when starting left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a non-contact knee injury during Thursday's training camp. And come Thursday afternoon, the team's worst fears for Slater were realized. According to a statement from the Chargers, Slater suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. The two-time Pro Bowler will under go surgery and has already been ruled out for the entire 2025 season. But what is Slater's timeline to return looking like? With an injury like a patellar tendon tear, the road back could not be more difficult for an NFL player. Patellar tendon recovery time While torn ligaments like an ACL or MCL aren't the career-threatening injuries they once were, the same can't be said for a ruptured patellar tendon. It's a brutal, devastating injury that has potential career-ending implications. According to a study from Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, an analysis of patellar tendon tears in NFL players between 2009 and 2023 painted a grim picture. From the study on return to play: The overall RTP for PT tears was 55.4% (31/56). For players with PT tears, 21.4% (12/56) returned to their prior performance level within 2 years, with 7 players doing so during the next season and 5 players doing so during the second post-injury season. Essentially, 45.6% of players with that injury never return to NFL action. And nearly 80% of players didn't return within two seasons. Every player is different, but Slater certainly faces a difficult road back after such a serious injury. He will miss the 2025 season and could reasonably be out for the 2026 season as well, if not longer.
