This Good News From Palantir Just Lifted One of the Red Flags on PLTR Stock

Globe and Mail03-03-2025
There are three red flags with Palantir that analysts are concerned about. First, Palantir's employee headcount expanded by just 5% in 2024 after declining by 3% in 2023. In the last two years, its net new hires totaled 98 employees. Second, CEO Alex Karp filed paperwork for prearranged share sale, spooking investors. Finally, last month, Palantir's chief accounting officer, Heather Planishek, announced her resignation.
However, the good news is that Palantir just lifted one of its red flags. The company appointed Jeffrey Buckley as its new chief accounting officer, effective March 24, 2025. Buckley will replace David Glazer, who has served in the role on an interim basis since Feb. 25 following Planishek's resignation.
According to a report from Street Insider, this marks a return for Buckley, who previously served as Palantir's chief accounting officer from September 2020 to February 2023. Most recently, he was chief accounting officer at Human Interest, a private financial services company. Buckley also previously worked at Zynga, holding the same title from 2017 to 2020.
Glazer will continue serving as CFO and Treasurer after Buckley assumes his duties.
Palantir Stock Is Down 32% From All-Time Highs
Palantir was the top-performing stock in the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) in 2024, surging over 300% last year. However, the ongoing market volatility has dragged the tech stock down nearly 30% from its all-time highs, valuing the company at a market cap of $200 billion.
Palantir evolved from its 2003 origins as a software provider for U.S. intelligence agencies to become a comprehensive data integration powerhouse serving both the government and commercial sectors.
Its four principal software platforms — Gotham, Foundry, Apollo, and Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) — form a powerful ecosystem that enables organizations to harness their data for critical decision-making.
As of Dec. 31, 2024, Palantir had 711 customers across 90 industries worldwide. It generated $2.9 billion in revenue for the year, representing 29% growth from 2023. It achieved $310.4 million in operating income, or $1.1 billion in adjusted operating income, excluding stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes.
Palantir's customer base is diverse, with 55% of revenue from government clients and 45% from commercial customers. U.S. customers account for 66% of revenue, generating $1.9 billion in 2024 — a 38% increase from the previous year. Palantir's top 20 customers spent an average of $64.6 million each, up 18% from 2023.
A Widening Ecosystem
Palantir's platforms address critical challenges in data integration and operation. Initially built for intelligence and defense agencies, Gotham enables users to identify patterns in complex datasets. Foundry is a central operating system for organizational data, allowing users to integrate and analyze information efficiently. Apollo ensures continuous delivery of software updates across various environments, while the newest offering, AIP, enables responsible AI implementation by integrating large language models with enterprise data and operations.
Palantir's remaining deal value reached $5.4 billion by the end of 2024, a 40% increase from the previous year. Commercial contracts accounted for $3.1 billion, up 47%, while government contracts represented $2.3 billion, a 30% increase. This doesn't include an additional $3.7 billion in potential government indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contracts.
Despite a challenging macroeconomic environment, Palantir continues to grow at a steady pace and is poised to benefit from AI-powered tailwinds, making it a top stock to own in 2025. Out of the 19 analysts covering PLTR stock, three recommend 'Strong Buy,' 10 recommend 'Hold,' one recommends 'Moderate Sell,' and five recommend 'Strong Sell.' The average target price for PLTR stock is $85.11, below its current trading price.

Equities stay strong, but fixed income dampens DB pension plan returns in Q2 Français

TORONTO, July 29, 2025 /CNW/ - Defined benefit (DB) pension plans administered by RBC Investor Services returned 1.6% in the second quarter of 2025, an improvement over Q1's 1.1% gain. While equities contributed positively once again, weakness in fixed income markets dampened overall performance. "We hope that mid-April marked the bottom for global equity markets, given the steady recovery since then, buoyed in Canada by a 90-day tariff pause and stable inflation," said Isabelle Tremblay, Director, Segment Lead – Asset Owner, RBC Investor Services. "Momentum continued as tariff relief and Canadian government stability contributed to policy clarity and a more predictable domestic outlook." "Canadian equities continued to deliver, and plans with higher domestic allocations reaped the benefits. But with long bonds under pressure and volatility still present, most plan sponsors are staying the course and waiting for clearer signals," Tremblay added. Canadian equities returned 9.0% for pension plans in Q2 (10.2% YTD), outperforming the TSX Composite Index, which rose 8.5% in the quarter (also 10.2% YTD). Leading sectors included Information Technology (14.2%), Consumer Discretionary (14.1%), and Financials (12.1%). Notably, four of the five top-performing client pension plans in Q2 were those with the highest exposure to Canadian equities, highlighting the value of domestic positioning. Foreign equities held by pension plans returned 5.1% in the quarter, accounting for all their YTD gain. In contrast, the MSCI World Index rose 5.7% in Q2 (3.9% YTD). Growth stocks significantly outpaced value, with the MSCI World Growth Index gaining 11.6%, while the MSCI World Value Index declined 0.1%. A strengthening Canadian dollar notably reduced the impact of foreign market gains. For example, while the S&P 500 climbed 10.9% in U.S. dollar terms, the return dropped to 5.2% in CAD after accounting for currency effects. YTD, the S&P 500 was up 6.2% in USD but just 0.8% in CAD. Pension plans posted a -1.2% return in fixed income for the quarter (+0.9% YTD), underperforming the FTSE Canada Universe Bond Index, which declined 0.6% in Q2 (+1.4% YTD). The lag was driven by a structural overweight in long-duration bonds, which fell 2.3% amid rising long-term yields. Wall Street gains as investors eye US trade talks with China, Fed rate decision and earnings reports

Wall Street chugged mostly higher in premarket trading Tuesday as Chinese and U.S. officials begin a second day of trade talks and the Federal Reserve kicks off its two-day meeting to make a decision on interest rate policy. The meetings come amid one of the busiest weeks of corporate earnings season and a flurry of economic data. Futures for the S&P 500 were up 0.2%, while futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged 0.1% higher. Nasdaq futures rose 0.4% before the bell. Analysts said investors were watching for the latest from President Donald Trump and U.S. trade talks with China in Stockholm. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng were meeting in the Swedish capital. 'Aside from addressing economic imbalances, tariffs are also now well entrenched in the geopolitical arena,' Tan Boon Heng of the Asia & Oceania Treasury Department at Mizuho Bank said in a commentary. With regard to the Fed meeting, the widespread expectation on Wall Street is that officials at the U.S. central bank will wait until September to resume cutting interest rates, though a couple of Trump's appointees could dissent in the vote. The Fed has been on hold with interest rates this year since cutting them several times at the end of 2024. Trump has publicly chastised Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not cutting the benchmark lending rate, which Powell says is due to the uncertain ramifications of Trump's trade war, most notably whether those policies will trigger higher inflation. In corporate news, UnitedHealth Group shares slid 4% after the company badly missed Wall Street's second-quarter earnings expectations and disappointed investors with its updated profit forecast. The health care giant said Tuesday that it expects rising medical costs to continue to pressure its performance and forecast adjusted earnings of at least $16 per share in 2025. The company had started 2025 with an initial forecast for adjusted earnings of up to $30 per share. Union Pacific rose 1.2% in premarket after it offered up details on its bid to merge with Norfolk Southern that would create the U.S.'s first transcontinental railroad. Union Pacific is offering $20 billion cash and one share of its stock to buy Norfolk Southern, the companies said Tuesday, adding that the merger would streamline deliveries of all kinds of raw materials and goods. Norfolk Southern shares fell 3%. Novo Nordisk, which makes the weight loss drug Wegovy, plunged 24% in premarket trading after the company cut its sales and operating profit for the year. Also reporting earnings Tuesday are Boeing and Starbucks. Hundreds of U.S. companies are lined up to report how much profit they made during the spring, with nearly a third of the businesses in the S&P 500 index scheduled to deliver updates this week. The government will also be busy this week, releasing three separate sets of data on the labor market, punctuated with the July jobs report on Friday. The first second-quarter GDP estimate come on Wednesday, followed by the Fed's preferred measure of inflation on Thursday. Elsewhere, in Europe at midday, France's CAC 40 jumped 1.3% in early trading, while the German DAX rose 1.1%. Britain's FTSE 100 added 0.5%. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 fell 0.8% to 40,674.55 on broad selling of major companies including automakers and big banks. Toyota Motor Corp. dipped 2.3% and Honda Motor Co. fell 2.1%. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group finished 1.8% lower, while Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group stock dipped 1.6%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.2% to 25,524.45, while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.3% to 3,609.71. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.1% higher to 8,704.60. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.7% to 3,230.57. Samsung Electronics edged 0.3% higher after jumping nearly 7% on Monday on news that it signed a deal with Tesla to provide computer chips for its electric vehicles. In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude was unchanged at $66.71 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, gained 5 cents to $69.37 a barrel.
