HANOI (Reuters) -SpaceX is expected to launch Starlink satellite internet services in Vietnam from the fourth quarter of this year, state media cited a government official as saying on Tuesday.
"The Ministry of Science and Technology aims to license the pilot services using low-orbit satellites immediately after the investor completes investment procedures and establishes a legal entity in Vietnam, with the goal of deploying the services in the fourth quarter of 2025," deputy minister Pham Duc Long said, according to the Tuoi Tre newspaper.
SpaceX is currently working with the Ministry of Finance to complete the procedures required to set up a wholly-owned unit in Vietnam, the report said.
Two sources told Reuters in April that SpaceX was readying a ground station in the Southeast Asian country for Starlink satellites and planned many more.
Vietnam's government said in March it would allow SpaceX to launch its services in the country on a trial basis, with no foreign ownership limit. It said the trial period would last until the end of 2030.

Waymo to launch autonomous ride-hailing in Dallas next year

FILE PHOTO: Waymo driverless vehicles charge at a Waymo charging station in Santa Monica, California, U.S., May 30, 2025. REUTERS/Daniel Cole/File Photo (Reuters) -Alphabet's Waymo said on Monday it will roll out its autonomous ride-hailing service in Dallas in 2026, accelerating its U.S. expansion as electric vehicle maker Tesla pushes to grow its recently launched robotaxi business. After years of cautious growth, Waymo has recently increased its pace, launching in new cities through partnerships with ride-hailing platforms and fleet operators. In Dallas, Waymo will operate through a new multi-year partnership with car rental company Avis Budget Group, which will manage fleet operations, including maintenance and depot infrastructure, Waymo said in a blog. Waymo currently serves more than 250,000 paid trips every week with about 1,500 vehicles in cities such as Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. This year, Waymo began its service in Austin exclusively on the Uber platform, months before Tesla started a limited robotaxi trial in the city with about a dozen Model Y SUVs and a human safety monitor in the front passenger seat. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company will rapidly expand its robotaxi services to other U.S. cities and is seeking regulatory approval from California, Nevada, Florida, and Arizona. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been challenging, with several companies such as GM's Cruise shutting down after collisions, recalls, and federal investigations. Amazon-backed Zoox is among the few still operating, preparing to launch commercial services later this year. Until Tesla's Austin trial, Waymo was the only company to operate paid driverless taxis in the United States. Rides will be available through the Waymo app. The company is also planning launches in Miami and Washington, D.C., in 2026 as part of its broader national rollout. The collaboration is part of Avis' broader strategy to evolve from a traditional rental car company into a mobility services provider. Scale AI competitor Micro1 raising funds at $500 million valuation, sources say

FILE PHOTO: AI Artificial Intelligence words are seen in this illustration taken, May 4, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Scale AI competitor Micro1 is finalizing a Series A round valuing the startup at $500 million, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Micro1 provides data labeling services to artificial intelligence labs, a sector that has grown tremendously in recent years as high-quality, human-generated datasets have become more important in training advanced AI systems. Micro1 has capitalized on this trend by building an AI-powered recruitment engine enabling AI labs to target specialized experts instead of large pools of low-wage labor. The company has told investors it has crossed $50 million in annualized revenue, up from $10 million earlier this year, and is projecting it will cross $100 million in annualized revenue by the end of September, the sources said. Former Twitter COO Adam Bainjoined its board recently, and venture capital firms 01A and LG Technology Ventures willinvest in the round, the sources said. Micro1 has benefited from recent changes at San Francisco-based Scale AI, a data labeling company that provides infrastructure and services to help organizations accelerate the development of AI models. Scale AI recently lost customers after Meta Platforms poached its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to become Meta's chief AI officer, leading Meta's new Superintelligence Labs. Among the customers that have left or are planning to leave Scale AI are Alphabet's Google and OpenAI, which are planning to move away over concerns that doing business with Scale could expose their research priorities to Meta. Another Scale AI competitor, Surge AI, is raising up to $1 billion, and raked in over $1 billion in revenue last year. (Reporting by Anna Tong in San Francisco; Editing by Matthew Lewis)

Caribbean seeks stronger Africa trade as traditional routes waver

(Reuters) -Caribbean nations are looking to "decisively" broaden opportunities for trade with Africa, the secretary-general of its regional bloc said on Monday, in view of looming uncertainty with its more traditional trade partners. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Stronger trade ties with Africa would signal a key economic shift in a region relies heavily on trade with the U.S., Canada and Europe, in a period of growing protectionism. In April, Washington imposed a baseline 10% tariff on nearly all its trade partners. It has been levying its power to influence domestic Caribbean policies on issues such as Cuban medical services and citizen-by-investment programs. KEY QUOTE "We must decisively open the door to greater trade between our regions," Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Carla Barnett said at the opening of the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum in Grenada. "CARICOM trade with the Continent must grow beyond the current levels of less than 3% of our overall trade, particularly with the uncertainty that currently looms over trade with traditional partners." BY THE NUMBERS The U.S. is CARICOM's largest trading partner, according to latest data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC). The U.S. bought a quarter of the bloc's $38.8 billion in exports shipped throughout 2023, according to OEC data, and sold 39% the $43.4 billion worth of goods imported into the region. CONTEXT Caribbean nations remain particularly vulnerable to global economic shocks such as inflation and pandemics, due to their reliance on tourism, imported food and fuel, and their exposure to climate-related disasters. Barnett said the region has already collaborated with Africa on so-far unsuccessful campaigns for slavery reparations from former colonizers and for compensation from rich nations for climate change, which disproportionately affects small island states.
