Stormers pick Sacha ahead of Libbok for crunch playoff

The DHL Stormers take on Glasgow Warriors in a Vodacom United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Scotstoun on Friday.
Having finished the regular season in fifth position, the Stormers face the defending champions in Glasgow, with kick-off at 20h35 SA time on Friday night.
Warrick Gelant will link up with speedsters Seabelo Senatla and Ben Loader in a potent back three, while Suleiman Hartzenberg will form a midfield partnership with Dan du Plessis in the absence of the suspended Damian Willemse.
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Stefan Ungerer will continue as the halfback pairing with the experienced Herschel Jantjies and Manie Libbok set to make an impact for the Stormers in the second half from the replacements bench.
Evan Roos resumes his place at the back of the scrum, with Marcel Theunissen and Paul de Villiers on the flanks and Louw Nel among the replacements.
Stormers skipper Salmaan Moerat starts alongside Ruben van Heerden in the second row, with locks JD Schickerling and Connor Evans among the six forwards set to feature after half-time.
Andre-Hugo Venter starts at hooker, with props Ali Vermaak and Neethling Fouche either side of him, with Vernon Matongo, Joseph Dweba and Sazi Sandi the front row forwards on the Stormers' replacements bench.
Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson said that following a good week in Glasgow his team is ready to give it a full go at Scotstoun.
'The build-up to this game has gone well and we know that it will take a huge effort to beat a good Glasgow team on their home track.
'We have built up some good momentum recently and want to take that into this game. This was a very tough team to pick with some deserving players missing out, but we are excited to see what these combinations can do,' he said.
Stormers – 15 Warrick Gelant, 14 Ben Loader, 13 Suleiman Hartzenberg, 12 Dan du Plessis, 11 Seabelo Senatla, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Evan Roos, 7 Marcel Theunissen, 6 Paul de Villiers, 5 Ruben van Heerden, 4 Salmaan Moerat (captain), 3 Neethling Fouche, 2 Andre-Hugo Venter, 1 Ali Vermaak.

‘Warrior' Henco Venter departing Glasgow reluctantly after two stellar seasons for the Scottish URC champions

Glasgow Warriors' Henco Venter will reluctantly leave the club after not receiving a contract extension ahead of the next season. Image: Backpagepix South African Henco Venter, who has been a standout acquisition for the defending United Rugby Championship (URC) winners, the Glasgow Warriors, for the last couple of seasons, might play his final game for the team this coming weekend. They face Leinster in Dublin in the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon and depending on the result, it could be the swansong for the Free State native. He recently returned to the side following a ban and immediately made his impact felt, playing 72-odd minutes against the Stormers in the URC quarters. He terrorised his compatriots and spearheaded the Glasgow defence and breakdown play to help them to a comfortable 36-18 victory. He's been a thorn in the side of the Stormers, especially in the tournament, and seemed to always lift his game when facing the men from the Cape. In last season's final against the Bulls, Venter also made a telling impact to help his side lift the URC title against the odds at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Now, he is on the cusp of exiting the side that became his second home since leaving South Africa, and ahead of a move to French Pro D2 club Brive, he is poised to put his best foot forward. According to Venter, after a directive from higher-ups in Scottish rugby, the Warriors must focus on young talent and not foreign soldiers from next season. Despite being forced to leave, Venter told BBC Sport he loved his time in Glasgow and would've liked to extend his stay after two seasons there. 'It's a tricky question,' he said after being quizzed about leaving. 'It's also from above and all the stuff going on in Scotland regarding foreign players. That's basically one of the main reasons. I love this place, and I'd love to stay, but... (let's) leave it there. 'They want more Scottish players, and I understand that is their plan going forward and I respect that. I am not Scottish, so it's a privilege to be here and give back to the club and the country. If they make their plans and have a will to make Scottish rugby better, I hope they succeed in it.' The 33-year-old played for the Cheetahs before venturing overseas to Japan for a season. He returned and played for the Sharks in an unsuccessful spell before signing for Glasgow. Last season, he was one of the standout campaigners during their title-winning run. He has been more than a handy replacement when the Scotland players have been in camp during the Six Nations and that experience is what they will likely miss going forward. Venter, however, is looking forward to playing another big role this weekend when they take on Leinster in the semi-finals. He is also hopeful there will be a title-defending match after this weekend's duel at the Aviva Stadium.

Stormers bruiser locks in URC award

Ruben van Heerden has been crowned the Vodacom United Rugby Championship's (URC) Tackle Machine for 2024-25, highlighting his superb defensive impact for the Stormers this season. The award celebrates the best defender among players who made at least 150 tackles this season, marking Van Heerden as one of South Africa's top performers heading into the URC semi-finals. The towering lock topped the charts with 171 tackles at a staggering 98% success rate, edging out Glasgow's Rory Darge (160 tackles, 97%) and Sharks loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi (157 tackles, 96.8%). Stormers fans have more to cheer about, with winger Leolin Zas sharing the Top Try Scorer title (nine tries) alongside Cardiff's Harri Millard and Munster's Tom Farrell, though Millard ultimately claimed the prize by scoring his nine tries in the fewest minutes played. MORE: Four Boks in race for URC's young gun award Fullback Warrick Gelant also featured strongly, finishing second in the Playmaker Award standings. Gelant's creativity and offloads helped him push Munster's Tom Farrell, who took top honours thanks to his combined tally of try assists (5), offloads (41) and defenders beaten (61). The Sharks were represented on the leaderboard through flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse, who finished second in the Golden Boot category with 108 points, while Lions fullback Quan Horn claimed third in the Playmaker Award race. These awards come as the URC celebrates its standout players before naming the prestigious Elite XV, Next-Gen Player of the Season, Coach of the Season and Players' Player of the Season later this week. URC 2025-25 awards winners Golden Boot: Ioan Lloyd (Scarlets) Top Try Scorer: Harri Millard (Cardiff) Tackle Machine: Ruben van Heerden (Stormers) Ironman: Cam Winnett (Cardiff) Playmaker: Tom Farrell (Munster) The post Stormers bruiser locks in URC award appeared first on SA Rugby magazine. Time to say goodbye: Stormers send players off on low note

The Stormers are losing at least five players permanently, and one possibly on sabbatical, after their URC season came to an end over the past weekend. Stormers flyhalf Manie Libbok and hooker Joseph Dweba are both leaving, Libbok possibly on sabbatical, and Dweba permanently, during the off season. Picture: Cole Cruickshank/Gallo Images The Stormers said goodbye to a number of players on a low note when they were dumped out of the United Rugby Championship (URC) at the quarterfinal stage by Glasgow Warriors over the past weekend. At least five players have played their last game for the Cape side to take up opportunities in the UK and Europe, unless some return later in their careers. Scrumhalves Herschel Jantjies and Paul de Wet are heading to Bayonne in France and the Bulls respectively, while hooker Joseph Dweba departs for English Premiership side Exeter Chiefs. English wing Ben Loader is heading back home to try reignite his international aspirations with Gloucester, and former Zimbabwe international and Exeter Chiefs legend Dave Ewers has decided to hang up his boots, after spending his final season playing a mentorship and back up role at the union. Arguably the biggest loss, possibly on a short term sabbatical to Japan, will be Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok, with Director of Rugby John Dobson confirming after the Glasgow loss that he was on his way out with the others, but with no confirmation on what sort of deal. Fade into the night 'Paul de Wet was (with us from) URC one, and didn't get on the field. Obviously Joe (Dweba), Manie and Hersch are big players for us that we wanted to fade out into the night. Dave Ewers also didn't get on the field,' said Dobson, on Friday night, about the players leaving. 'We'll go have a chat now when we get back to the hotel because that changing room is so sad now. It's like an American Civil War tent. The guys are really, really distraught and it's not the way I want to say goodbye to these guys who, as I say, have put a lot in. 'We really, honestly, in our heart of hearts believed we'd be playing next week. All those names, Ben Loader too, have been really good Stormers, so (it is) not how we wanted to say goodbye to them like this.' Another big blow to the Stormers was the unexpected forced retirement of club legend Steven Kitshoff earlier this year, after he was unable to fully recover from a serious neck injury. But it is not all doom and gloom for the union, however, as they have a couple of big names set to join them in the off season, while a number of other deals are expected to be made as well. The biggest arrivals are Springbok double World Cup winning scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, who started his career in Durban with the Sharks and will likely finish up his career at the Stormers, and Sharks prop Ntuthuko Mchunu, who is moving down the coast.
