7 tips to prepare your home for the bitterly cold weather in North Texas
"I didn't expect to see the snow this morning, so that was shocking. What I did to get ready is I definitely warmed my car up before I headed to work this morning," said Jenny Spencer.
"It's cold, bitter cold, but it's doable," said DeAundre Bradford.
"It's old. Too cold. This is not Texas," said Lizzie Hallman.
It's a busy day for HVAC, plumbers, and electricians like A#1 Air.
"We're running about twice the volume today. We can't keep up with phone calls," said A#1 Air General Manager Rob Crowson.
Crowson has some ways to prepare your home now for a potentially record-breaking night of cold weather.
"Make sure all your outside faucets are covered. You can buy the Styrofoam covers. Everybody has seen them. You can put them on outside to make sure that helps. If you don't have that available, wrap some blankets and tape them on," Crowson said.
Let your faucet drip during this cold weather. It'll help protect your pipes from freezing and potentially bursting. Also, open your cabinets so heat can get inside.
Get a tune-up for your heating system, and don't play around with the temperature.
"I will say it's better if it's running constantly and not shutting off and turning on and shutting off and turning on," Crowson said. "Figure out that temperature that it can maintain and keep it there."
Crowson encourages you to check your attic.
"If you see any exposed copper, or even you'll see some red and blue plastic-looking lines. If any of that is exposed, it's never a bad idea to get that insulated, too," Crowson said.
Finally, invest in a backup generator in case you lose power.

Another sunny July day is on the way to end the work week. Temperatures across Dallas-Fort Worth this morning are in the mid-to-upper 70s, with a few clouds in the area. Plentiful sunshine is ahead for Friday with highs in the upper 90s, and "feels-like" temperatures around 100-102 degrees. Drier air this afternoon will keep humidity in check, but it will still feel like the triple digits. Thousands of California Residents Urged To Remain Indoors
A regional air quality alert has been issued for parts of Southern California as two fires continue to burn in Riverside County, prompting officials to warn thousands of residents to remain indoors to avoid exposure to unhealthy smoke levels. In January, wildfires in California resulted in the deaths of at least two dozen people and displaced thousands. "Particles in wildfire smoke can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, asthma attacks and difficulty breathing," the alert warned. "Everyone can be affected, but people with lung or heart disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children, and those who spend a lot of time outdoors are at greater risk." The Wolf fire, which broke out at about 3 p.m. Sunday in the area of Old Banning Idyllwild Road and the Wolfskill Truck Trail south of the city of Banning, led to evacuation orders being issued for surrounding areas. According to a map from Watch Duty-a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization run by volunteers-the Wolf fire has burned more than 1,164 acres of land as of early Monday morning. Meanwhile, the Mindy fire, which also started on Sunday, had burned about 100 acres near Decoursey Road in Riverside County, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). The National Weather Service on Sunday posted an alert warning of elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the atmosphere because of wildfire smoke. The alert applies to the Banning Pass, San Jacinto Mountains, Lake Riverside area, Cahuilla Reservation and Anza area. Affected cities included Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta and Coachella. Residents in affected areas were advised to remain indoors with windows and doors closed, avoid intense outdoor physical activity, and avoid other sources of pollution such as fireplaces, candles, incense and gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) said smoke from the Wolf fire was expected to most significantly affect areas close to and just north-northeast of the blaze, including the Banning Pass and San Jacinto Mountains. Smoke from the Mindy fire was projected to affect areas near and north of the blaze through Monday, with the greatest impact expected around Lake Riverside and the Cahuilla Reservation. Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department, on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday: "#WolfFIRE [UPDATE @9 p.m.] The fire continues to burn at a moderate rate in medium to heavy brush. "Four night-flying helicopters and hundreds of firefighters will continue working throughout the night on containing the fire. "Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place." At the time of writing, the air quality alert was in effect through 6 p.m. Monday. It will be another hot day today, potentially the hottest day of the year so far in 2025. The high for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is forecasted to reach 96 degrees with a heat index value in the triple digits. Winds will be from the south, around 10 to 15 mph. A few showers are possible for cities to the southeast, but most of North Texas will stay dry Sunday. Rain chances pick up moving into next week. A front will stall across North Texas Monday through Wednesday, allowing for showers and a few storms to flare up. The rain is much needed, since some of the driest months of the year are ahead. The good news is that a ridge of high pressure rebuilds, moving into next weekend. This will decrease the rain potential and increase the temperatures for the Fourth of July weekend. Be sure to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the A/C if you're planning on enjoying the outdoors this summer!
