Abu Dhabi, Tokyo join forces to promote bilateral economic development
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs have signed a new strategic agreement to support enterprises expanding beyond their domestic markets.
The partnership will focus on accelerating trade, sharing export strategies and unlocking new market opportunities for SMEs in both countries.
By combining Tokyo's industrial expertise with Abu Dhabi's global connectivity, the initiative aims to give growth-stage companies a competitive edge internationally.
Under the agreement, ADIO and Tokyo's Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs will lead efforts to connect entrepreneurs, exchange industry data and insights, and coordinate on policies that are critical to export success.
Designated teams in both Abu Dhabi and Tokyo will work closely to deliver joint activities over the next 12 months, including trade missions, policy dialogues, targeted workshops and business matching programmes.
Badr Al-Olama, Director General of ADIO, said the partnership reflects a shared vision that economic resilience begins with entrepreneurs who want to expand globally.
'Abu Dhabi's long-term growth strategy centres on building partnerships that empower innovation, enable exports and open new global pathways,' he said.
Tanaka Shinichi, Director General, Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, said Abu Dhabi offers an ideal platform for Tokyo-based SMEs aiming to expand their reach into the Middle East and beyond.
'This strategic partnership with ADIO will create tangible opportunities for export growth, knowledge exchange and deeper commercial ties. It's a timely and strategic step forward that strengthens both economies,' Shinichi said.
In the months ahead, ADIO and the Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs will begin implementing the first phase of the agreement, prioritising practical support for exporters, strategic dialogues and the joint promotion of opportunities aligned with the long-term economic agendas of both governments.

Negotiations to end nearly 20 months of war in Gaza have so far failed to achieve a breakthrough, with Israel resuming military operations in March following a short-lived truce. But a new proposal submitted by the US was approved by Israel on Thursday, and Hamas has said it is reviewing it. Palestine's deputy ambassador Majed Bamya said that international condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza was insufficient. 'There is international outrage, but our outrage is not good enough,' Mr Bamya told reporters. 'It's not good enough for the people of Gaza to know that the world condemns this action, condemns these crimes, stands against them. We need actions.' He accused Israel of attempting to forcibly erase the Palestinian cause and people, warning that such efforts would fail. Mr Bamya also pushed back against expectations that Palestinians should endure the crisis alone. 'The world cannot expect Palestinians to be superheroes, that they need to resist all of this on their own, that they need to figure out the way to survive, that they need to figure out how to stay in their land,' he said. 'Israel wants to convince them that if they want life, they can only find it away from them.' This week, Israel announced the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. On Friday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the Palestinian territory which Israel has occupied since 1967. Britain called the move a 'deliberate obstacle' to Palestinian statehood, and UN chief Antonio Guterres's spokesman said it pushed efforts towards a two-state solution 'in the wrong direction'. Mr Abushahab said the Arab Group looks forward to the upcoming conference in June on the two-state solution co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France as it is 'critical' for member states take concrete actions to advance sustainable peace. 'We salute those countries that recognised the state of Palestine and strongly encourage others to follow their example,' he said. 'Recognition is not just a symbolic gesture; it is a concrete step for the just and lasting peace.'

They also reflect Masdar City's commitment to innovation and support for its business community. MasdarCom is a community-driven digital ecosystem. It is designed to connect companies within Masdar City. The platform allows businesses to promote their services, collaborate with others, and manage transactions through a single, centralised interface. In addition, MasdarCom will be accessible to global users. This is expected to boost the international visibility of UAE-based enterprises. Alongside the platform, Masdar City Free Zone revealed its new 24/7 Customer Support Centre. It is the first of its kind in any UAE Free Zone. The support centre will assist tenants via phone, email, Microsoft Teams, and self-service kiosks. Key services include licensing, visa processing, and payments. Ahmed Baghoum, CEO of Masdar City, stated that MasdarCom is more than a platform. He described it as a transformative step in Free Zone support. Timeframe: When the world's first 'gold to go' ATM was launched at Emirates Palace
On May 12, 2010, the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi, now known as Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, introduced the world's first gold-dispensing ATM. Known as Gold to Go, it was developed by the German company Ex Oriente Lux. The ATM sold 24-carat gold bars and coins directly to users. Within a day of being unveiled, the machine sold out. Although capable of holding up to 300 pieces, the gold ATM carried only 100 for its debut, said Thomas Geissler, the chief executive of Ex Oriente Lux. The first piece of gold, a one-ounce bar, was presented as a token of respect to Sheikha Fatima, Mother of the Nation. On the day of the unveiling, two men each spent almost Dh20,000 buying each of the 10 gold products on offer, The National reported at the time. Mohamed Al Foulathi, an engineer and businessman who was an investor with Gold To Go, said then that the idea was to develop the device and expand across the region and beyond. "Anything to do with gold has to come to Abu Dhabi and then go on through to the world," he said. The machine dispensed 24-carat gold bars in a range of sizes, including 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 250 grams, as well as one-ounce options. It also offered gift boxes containing gold coins embossed with designs such as the South African Krugerrand, Canadian maple leaf and Australian kangaroo. Each gold bar was sealed in plastic with an anti-counterfeit hologram and included details of its purity, price per gram and the company's 10-day return policy. Prices were updated every 10 minutes based on real-time gold market rates. The ATM itself was gold-plated, matching the opulence of the Emirates Palace Hotel. The machine was equipped with advanced security features, including anti-money laundering software and a robust physical structure designed to resist tampering. It also had an automatic shutdown mechanism in case of malfunction. Two more machines were installed in Dubai, one at Atlantis, The Palm in 2011 and another in Souk Madinat Jumeirah in 2013. The machines could also be found around the world, with three in the US and Germany, two in Portugal and one each in Italy, Switzerland and the UK. The Abu Dhabi gold ATM had been removed by 2016 and the two in Dubai were taken out by 2017.
