The protracted search for the new Rangers manager may have taken another twist over the past few hours, with reports emerging that Steven Gerrard has dropped out of the running to become the next manager, while another candidate in Davide Ancelotti is wanted by Deportivo La Coruna. According to an article in the Daily Record, the former Ibrox boss is deciding to stay put in the Middle East, where he was most recently in charge of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. And media outlets in Spain are reporting that Ancelotti is of interest to Deportivo, who are in Segunda Division. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gerrard guided Rangers to their last Premiership title in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa in the English Premier League. He has featured prominently in the race to take over from Philippe Clement ever since the Belgian was sacked back in February, but it is now being claimed that the Liverpool legend wants to stay in the Gulf for a further year due to family reasons. Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was last in football management with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. | Getty Images Gerrard is due to be part of TNT Sports Champions League final coverage this weekend and may give more detail on his future then. The former England midfielder was at Anfield on Sunday to take in Liverpool's English Premier League title celebration but in public has remained tight-lipped on speculation linking him with a Rangers return. The claims about Gerrard comes just hours after ex-Rangers chairman Dave King endorsed the 44-year-old for a sensational return. 'I'd be very surprised if they haven't spoken to him because Steven is the obvious choice,' King told the Rangers Review. 'I think I know him well enough to fairly accurately state it would be unfinished business for him. 'Steven left at a time he didn't want to leave. That's a fact. And the team was still top of the league at the time that he left. He wanted to defend that title. I think he would have defended the title had he stayed. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'So from Steven's personal point of view and where he is at the moment, I think he'd love nothing more than to come back to the club and take on the challenge of restoring the club. And it's not just about one title because the project that we hope we're starting now is a project to make Rangers the dominant number one team in Scotland. Gerrard 'would be a perfect fit' 'It's not about winning another league title. It's about really putting Rangers back at the top. This is a project. It's not a one-off. And I think Steven would be perfect for that. 'So I'd be very surprised if they haven't spoken to Steven because he's, as I say, he's by far the least risky candidate to give new money to, by far the least risky candidate.' The Ibrox club are understood to be in the closing stages in what has been a long hunt for a new help coach, elongated by the ongoing takeover from 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, who is reported to have flown into Scotland earlier this week to conclude the search. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Other candidates to have been linked with Rangers include Ancelotti, who is the son of legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti and recently left Real Madrid, ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin and Brian Priske, who was most recently at Feyenoord. It has been claimed that Ancelotti is wanted by other clubs across the continent - including Deportivo - with his father confirming earlier this week that he is in talks with potential suitors. Rangers' need for speed Rangers need to move quickly for a new head coach, given that their competitive season starts in the third week of July with Champions League qualifiers.

Ex-Hearts and Hibs stars futures now uncertain as rival provides cryptic update with free agency lurking

Kilmarnock have delivered a cryptic update that involves a number of former Hearts and Hibs stars. Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! A number of former Hearts and Hibs players are facing uncertain futures at a Premiership rival as they approach the final weeks of their current contracts. Former Hearts winger Gary Mackay-Steven plus former Hibs duo Fraser Murray and Kyle Magennis are both just weeks away from becoming free agents and an update from Kilmarnock has offered little in the way of clarity as the Rugby Park outfit settle into life under new manager Stuart Kettlewell. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The former Motherwell boss was named as permanent successor to Derek McInnes last month after the latter accepted an approach to take charge at Hearts - and Kettlewell has taken his time to assess the squad he inherited before making several decisions. Loan signings Tom Wilson-Brown, Calvin Ramsey and Stuart Findlay have all returned to their parent clubs and Mackay-Steven, Magennis and Murray are on a list of 12 players that are approaching the end of their current contracts. Former Hearts and Hibs stars in limbo Killie have confirmed 'conversations are ongoing with a number of players' but have not named the members of their squad that are in talks with the club about extending their time at Rugby Park. A statement released on the Killie website read: 'Kilmarnock Football Club wish to share a first-team squad update following the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign. Following the appointment of new manager Stuart Kettlewell, we are now in a position to confirm these decisions. The club would like to thank each of the departing squad members for the role they have played and wish them the best of luck for the future. 'Contract expiring: Aidan Glavin, Kieran O'Hara, Aaron Brown, Gary Mackay-Steven, Bobby Wales, Innes Cameron, Kyle Magennis, Joe Wright, Liam Donnelly, Fraser Murray, Danny Armstrong, Kyle Vassell. Returning to parent clubs: Tom Wilson-Brown, Calvin Ramsay, Stuart Findlay Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Remaining under contract: Robby McCrorie, Ben Brannan, Corrie Ndaba, Lewis Mayo, Robbie Deas, Matty Kennedy, David Watson, Liam Polworth, Brad Lyons, Rory McKenzie, Bruce Anderson, Marley Watkins, Cole Burke, Archie Traynor, Ethan Mersey, Ruari Ellis, Kian Leslie, Ethan Brown, Zander Craik, Corey Armour, Dylan Brown, Grant Marchant, Euan Bowie, Reuben Cooper, Samuel Duruh, Duncan Barlow. Conversations are ongoing with a number of players and with the 2025/26 transfer window due to open 12th June 2025, fans should expect updates in due course.' Kettlewell said over the weekend on Sportsound: "I've been round every player in contract or out of contract and I've tried to do an awful lot of work. There's big influential characters there. I've done a lot of fact finding with the staff that are in the building. As many quality players that we can get tied up, we'll look to do that but of course there's going to be a freshness."
