Will Leahy's advice as Carl Mullan takes over Rose of Tralee gig
2FM host Carl announced on Friday that he landed the new gig as the Master of Ceremonies for the pageant, which kicks off on Monday.
Following the announcement that Carl was taking over, his predecessor Will Leahy thanked people for their support since he took over back in 2005 — and even joked that in 2045, when Carl keeps on to the job for as long as he has, they can exchange notes. 'All good things etc. After 20 years as the announcer/social media presenter on the Rose of Tralee, I sadly won't be at the show this year,' Will wrote on Facebook. 'This is quite an unusual presenter announcement as I am not leaving to pursue other projects or to start a podcast! I'd keep doing it forever, but I've been in the job for 20 years which is an eternity in the presenting world.
'I am going to miss the annual mad summer camp that I have been honoured to be a part of for all these years. I started with Ray D'Arcy in 2005 – yes, that long ago. Myself and Dáithí have soldiered together for 15 years, and in the past few years Kathryn has added greatly to the team.
'So to the best crew of tv professionals, the Rose team and, of course, the 576 Roses that I have met, thanks for letting me be part of telly history. Plus, I'll still be on the Breakfast Show on RTE Gold everyday which is truly the best craic in radio.' Carl will be taking over as the Master of Ceremonies at the Rose of Tralee this week. Turning to his successor in Carl, Will wrote 'I want to wish Carl the best of luck in the job – he will be amazing and I have left post-its all around the desk just in case. Here's looking ahead to his 20 years and we can compare notes in 2045!'
Carl announced that he'd be taking over as the new Rose MC, joking that he'd be leaving his duties as 2FM DJ for approximately three days.

'Do they need you for four?' co-presenter Roz joked, before Carl announced 'I am absolutely buzzing to let everyone know that I am the new Master of Ceremoies at the Rose of Tralee International Festival!'
'The MC,' Carl confirmed, 'The voiceover guy. I'm just going to keep it to Master of Ceremonies, if ya don't mind. Maybe if you see me on the street go, 'There's the Master of Ceremonies for the Rose of Tralee!''
'That would be a nice way to address him,' Roz joked.
The Rose of Tralee kicks off on Monday at 8pm.

RTE bosses have eyes on Doireann replacement for DWTS
RTÉ bosses are considering putting 2FM presenter Laura Fox under the glare of the glitterball spotlight as a co-host on the next season of Dancing with the Stars. Although RTÉ has not yet made a final decision on whether or not to proceed with a ninth series of the show, sources this weekend predicted the ratings hit will be returning to TV screens next January. And they indicated Montrose chiefs are 'eyeing up' Fox as a potential replacement for co-presenter Doireann Garrihy, who is preparing for the arrival of her first child. Doireann Garrihy and Mark Mehigan. Pic: Doireann Garrihy/Instagram Presenting RTÉ's most popular programme alongside Jennifer Zamparelli would be a major boost to rising star Fox's career. And sources said producers have already identified the popular Galway girl as a stand-in for Garrihy. A station insider told 'Word is RTÉ and [production company] Shinawhil are eyeing up Laura to host Dancing [with the Stars] alongside Jennifer. Garrihy and her new husband, podcaster Mark Meighan, announced in April that they are expecting their first child. Photo: Instagram/Doireann Garrihy. 'Laura really fits the bill. She's lively, bubbly, fun and she has really proved herself as a solid TV presenter on shows like Ireland's Fittest Family. 'She has also been a contestant on Dancing, so she can bring that experience of being on the dance floor when she is talking to contestants after their dance.' 'So Laura really is an all-rounder and the perfect fit to take over from Doireann while she is on maternity leave.' Laura Fox. Pic: Instagram It has also been speculated that Westlife star and former DWTS host Nicky Byrne could be in line to make a surprise return. 'There's also talk of Nicky making a comeback, but Laura is more likely to land the gig,' the source added. RTÉ did not respond to queries from Extra this weekend but previously said that while the ninth series of Dancing with the Stars has not yet been confirmed, the 'commissioning process will take place in due course'. Fox's fellow 2FM presenter Garrihy and her new husband, podcaster Mark Meighan, announced in April that they are expecting their first child. The couple, who tied the knot last year, shared the news on Instagram with photos holding their baby scan. The snap was accompanied by the caption: 'We are beside ourselves with joy. Here's to the greatest chapter yet.' A pic from the DWTS final. Pic: Doireann Garrihy/Instagram Ahead of their new arrival, Garrihy and Meighan are enjoying their final months as a twosome, soaking up the sun on holiday in Spain. The 2FM presenter posted a video montage to her followers on social media this week with the caption: 'One last bit of galavanting [sic] as a duo (please god). So grateful and so excited for the coming weeks of working, nesting, and prepping!' Garrihy also shared pictures of her showing off her radiant pregnancy glow, and others of the couple laughing over dinner.

Kerry Rose of Tralee opens up about strict rules to ‘safeguard' young women
The Kerry Rose of Tralee has opened up about the festival's strict rules to 'safeguard' young women. Laura Daly, from Ballymacelligott, is hoping to take the crown back to the Kingdom. But the 23-year-old has revealed what goes on behind the scenes to keep all 32 Roses looking so fresh for the Rose of Tralee, which will be hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí Ó Sé. She told the Irish Mirror: 'There's a mixture of things. But you know what, they're put in place in a sense that keeps us safe, keeps us well, keeps us going, because it is a very long process. 'People are tired. You're being pulled for pictures, you're being pulled for interviews. You're with the girls. You're trying to get to know 32 new people, not to mind your chaperone team, not to mind everybody who awaits you when you come down to Tralee as well. 'But when it comes to curfews, even last night, we had a gala up in Co Meath in the Knightsbrook Hotel and there was a few of us looking at our chaperone saying, 'When is it bedtime?' Tyrone Rose Clóideach Donagh, Boston and New England Rose Maeve Kelly, Kerry Rose Laura Daly, Texas Rose Sara Costa, Carlow Rose Katie Ryan, Down Rose Anna Mulholland, Laois Rose Katelyn Cummins and Meath Rose Ella Bannon (Image: Domnick Walsh © Eye Focus LTD) 'Like, we need bedtime. We want to shower. We need to pack suitcases. It's just to have our best interests at heart. Like, the biggest thing is we have a briefing every night, which basically is time keeping is the biggest one, really, if you're not on time, because it's all different wheels that are put in motion if one thing comes out, but to see the inner workings of this festival from this side of things. 'I would always say that from being involved, you think you know what the festival is, but I've just seen it in a brand new light this year. And you, you really get to see the inner workings of how the Roses, who are, I guess, who are at the centre of this festival, they need to be kept going. 'They need to make sure that they all have a voice come Monday and Tuesday night, nobody's getting sick, everybody's happy and in a good, safe head space, and everybody's feeling supported. 'So these rules, I guess people see them as rules, but when you're in it, you know why you need it. It's the same way as we're told to eat healthy, the same way as we're told to exercise, like all these things, like, when it comes to the rules, whether it's at bedtime, whether it's, you know, don't drink too much.' Kind hearted Kathryn rescues tiny kitten
Caring TV Presenter and Rose of Tralee co-host Kathryn Thomas came to the aid of a tiny, terrified kitten on a roundabout in County Kerry yesterday. (Friday) The tiny cat was stranded on the road into Tralee, as Kathryn described with 'cars literally driving over her'. The kitten couldn't move, and it's believed her back legs were broken. On a post on the Facebook page, and writing on her social media pages Kathryn detailed what happened and said, she stopped the car and picked up the injured kitten and took her to the Abbey Veterinary Centre on Church Street in Tralee where vet Deirdre Cremins is now looking after the lucky puss. PIC – Facebook page Before leaving the veterinary surgery, Kathryn and Deirdre decided the most appropriate name for the injured kitten was, what else, but Rose. Kathryn, who will co-host the Rose of Tralee with Daithí O'Shea on Monday and Tuesday nights, revealed that the terrrified little cat piddled all over her festival notes while travelling to the vets on the back seat of Kathryns car, but I'm sure saving the poor little mite was to the forefront of Kathryns mind. Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas. Pic: Domnick Walsh We hope she goes full circle now and adopts the little kitten as a pet for her little girls Grace and Ellie, who would probably be thrilled if mammy came home from Tralee with a fluffy little kitten called Rose.
