Man Utd 'to sell second star to Saudi Pro League' after Bruno Fernandes exit

Daily Mirror4 days ago

Manchester United could see Andre Onana head to Saudi Arabia as interest mounts in the goalkeeper with Bruno Fernandes also on the radar of those in the Middle East
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is another player in the squad who could head to Saudi Arabia this summer amid talk of a lucrative switch for captain Bruno Fernandes.
But whilst the Portugal playmaker has been a leading light Onana continues to underwhelm at Old Trafford. He's just concluded his second season with the club but has continued to make errors leading directly to goals. He was signed as David de Gea's replacement, but the jury is out as to whether the club made the right move.

Reports have claimed Onana is in advanced talks with newly-promoted Saudi Pro League side Neom SC and that United would be open to his sale. The Cameroon goalkeeper was left out of United's matchday squad to face Aston Villa in their final day win over Aston Villa.

Onana was replaced in goal by Altay Bayindir with Ruben Amorim having to come out and defend his goalkeeper. In April, following a poor showing in Lyon, Onana was dropped for the loss at Newcastle before returning.
The goalkeeper's current deal runs until 2028 and a source said: 'Andre's plan is to stay in Manchester and he wants to knuckle down and get United back to where they should be.
'His sole focus is on United and nothing else. He's a confident person and wants to prove the doubters wrong. He knows he has made mistakes but he sees proving people wrong as a challenge.'
That hasn't stopped reports swirling and it is understood that the Manchester outfit are considering a move for Torino keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. The 28-year-old started his pro career at Old Trafford before leaving due to work-permit problems. The Serbian has played a major role for Torino, keeping ten clean sheets in Serie A, to put a number of clubs on alert.
United are set for a major overhaul and their turnover of players could be aided by the potential sale of Fernandes, who could leave for Saudi in a deal worth £100m. Al-Hilal want the Portuguese star, who is weighing up the offer, even though Amorim is desperate to keep him.
He said: "I just have that feeling. When you talk to someone, you have that feeling if he wants to stay. Of course in a lot of games this season he was so frustrated, but he knows what we are doing. The feeling that I have every time I speak to him is he wants to continue for sure at Man Utd. But you never know."

Roma appoint former Atalanta coach Gasperini as new manager

June 6 (Reuters) - Former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been appointed AS Roma's new manager, the Serie A club said on Friday, with the 67-year-old signing a three-year contract. Gasperini left Atalanta on Saturday after nine years in charge, and will replace the retired Claudio Ranieri at Roma who finished fifth in the standings last season to qualify for the Europa League, a trophy Gasperini won with his previous club. Ranieri became Roma's third managerial appointment last season when the 73-year-old came out of retirement to return for his third spell in charge at the club where he began his playing career and now has an advisory role. Gasperini announced in February that he would not be signing a new deal at Atalanta, with his contract ending in June and while there was an option to extend it by a year, he decided the time was right to move on. "Gasperini's career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development," a Roma club statement said. "Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission." He helped take Atalanta from Serie A strugglers to regular European football, winning the Europa League in 2024, which was not only the club's maiden European triumph, but Gasperini's first trophy in a long managerial career which began in 2003. Gasperini began his coaching career at Crotone and has also managed Genoa, Inter Milan and Palermo, but made a name for himself at Atalanta, achieving European qualification in his first season after an absence of 26 years for the club. Atalanta led the Serie A standings last season in December and were involved in the title race for a long period before finishing third for the fourth time under Gasperini. Roma won the Conference League in 2022 and were losing finalists in the Europa League the following year and will look to Gasperini to take them back to Champions League football for the first time since 2019.

Why Man United can freely spend in transfer window

Manchester United cut their wage bill by £20m in the third quarter of the financial year, aiming to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and fund summer spending. Sir Jim Ratcliffe 's cost-cutting measures led to over 250 staff redundancies, reducing staff payments to £71.2m from over £91m year-on-year. Departures and loan deals for players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, along with the absence of Champions League bonuses, contributed to the reduced wage bill. United have initiated summer transfer activities, agreeing to a £62.5m deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolves and bidding £45m for Brentford 's Bryan Mbeumo. Despite recording a net profit of £0.7m for the quarter, United acknowledges a disappointing season with their lowest finish in half a century and failure to qualify for Europe, expecting significant improvement next season.

Man United make second Bryan Mbeumo bid in pursuit of Brentford forward

Manchester United have returned with a second offer for Bryan Mbeumo as they try to tempt Brentford to sell the forward. United made a first approach of £45m plus a further £10m in add-ons for the 25-year-old, but it was not close to Brentford's valuation of the attacker, who is priced in excess of £60m. However, while United are pursuing their interest with a bigger package, they are adamant they will not repeatedly increase their bid as they aim to be disciplined in the transfer market. Mbeumo has attracted interest from a host of other clubs but wants to join United as part of their summer rebuilding. Brentford's attitude has always been that every player has his price but they are reluctant to sell for below that and while Mbeumo has a lone year left on his contract, the London club have an option to extend it. United are set to make Matheus Cunha their first summer signing after triggering the Brazil forward's £62.5m release clause at Wolves. The deal will be completed when he returns from international duty. Cunha, at 26, is a year older than Mbeumo and scored 15 Premier League goals last season to the Cameroon international's 20, a total bettered only by Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak.
