Scam losses hit RM1.12b in six months as authorities tighten crackdown
According to a written reply published on the Parliament website, the Home Ministry said that to curb such crimes, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), in operation since October 12, 2022, has been strengthened as a one-stop centre and has been operating round the clock since July 1.
This allows victims to lodge reports directly via the 997 hotline without having to go to a police station.
'After nearly three years of administrative operation, the Prime Minister, while chairing a special meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN), agreed that the NSRC should be placed under the purview of the Home Ministry and led by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),' the reply stated.
The response was to a question from R. Yuneswaran (PH–Segamat), who asked about the total financial losses suffered by Malaysians due to online scams up to July this year.
The ministry added that other measures to curb scams include international cooperation, proposals to amend the Penal Code to address cybercrime cases, and the Semakmule 2.0 portal initiative to help the public check the status of bank accounts, phone numbers and companies potentially involved in fraudulent activities. — Bernama

Meanwhile, with regards to the case involving Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son, the home minister said the police would make every effort to track down the perpetrator of the incident. He said the matter was not about whose child was involved but about the police's responsibility in ensuring public order, safety and the protection of all citizens, especially children. 'I leave it to the wisdom and swiftness of the police to handle this, and I pray that his son and wife recover quickly from the trauma,' he also said. Bachok police seek public help to find 15-year-old girl who left home with just wallet
BACHOK, Aug 15 — Police are seeking public assistance to locate a 15-year-old girl who went missing from Kampung Surau Budi, Jalan Tawang, last Tuesday. Bachok district police chief DSP Mohd Azrie Sulaiman said the teenager, Tuan Nurul Ain Najihah Tuan Perang, was reported missing by her father, Tuan Perang Raja Husin, after he noticed at 6 am that she was not in her bedroom. 'The victim was last seen at 11.30pm on Monday at her home,' he said in a statement yesterday. Mohd Azrie said the teenager, who had not been attending school since Form One, did not own a mobile phone and was found leaving home with her wallet and identity card. Singapore investigating 65 cases linked to etomidate-laced e-vaporisers
SINGAPORE, Aug 15 — Some 65 cases involving the possession, sale or importation of etomidate-laced e-vaporisers are currently under investigation in Singapore, as the authorities intensify enforcement actions against offences related to these devices. The Health Ministry (MOH) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said as of August 14, five individuals have been charged in court for the sale or importation of etomidate-laced e-vaporisers. 'MOH and the HSA have been intensifying enforcement actions against etomidate-laced e-vaporiser offences in Singapore. 'Under the Poisons Act, persons found possessing, importing or selling pods containing etomidate are liable upon conviction to a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to two years and/or fine up to S$10,000 (RM33,000)' they said in a statement. Etomidate will soon be classified as a Class C controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act and offenders caught using etomidate-laced e-vaporisers will be subject to mandatory supervision and rehabilitation. Repeat offenders are liable to be prosecuted and subject to jail for at least a year. More severe penalties apply to those selling, distributing or importing these devices, including imprisonment of up to 20 years and caning. Meanwhile, 100 individuals are under investigation for offences involving the sale, advertising or import of e-vaporisers under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act with another 18 individuals facing charges in court for offences under the same Act. The possession, use or purchase of e-vaporisers carries a maximum fine of S$2,000. It is also an offence to import, distribute, sell or offer for sale e-vaporisers and their components Any person convicted of an offence is liable to a fine of up to S$10,000, or imprisonment of up to six months or both for the first offence, and a fine of up to S$20,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months or both for the second or subsequent offence. — Bernama
