Minister's coup claim raises more questions than answers
There are many questions which can be asked about the claims this week by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni – who is also responsible for State Security – that state security agencies had identified 'a potential risk of a coup d'état and put measures in place to prevent it'.
Naturally, as she did previously on questions about her foreign travel expenditure, Ntshavheni can argue that she cannot release details of the alleged plotting for 'national security' reasons.
That is quite convenient, given that the only piece of news recently which is potentially disruptive to the security of the state is the theatrical press conference given by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused police management and other law enforcement agencies of corruption, as well as pointing at politicians.
It was theatrical because it looked similar to many of those we have seen by African military strongmen announcing the ouster of a civilian government.
So, was the coup claim intended to imply that the country was under threat by the likes of Mkhwanazi – or was it intended to divert some of the attention away from his claims?

Experts we spoke to agreed that the likelihood of a military coup is not high – mainly because there is still some discipline in the SA National Defence Force.
However, they all agreed that civil unrest, possibly even rising to the level of an insurrection, as happened in the pro-Jacob Zuma protests which rocked the country in 2021, is a far more worrying scenario.
South Africa is sitting on a social time bomb, which has been armed by increasing anger about poverty, inequality and joblessness, as well as the lack of service delivery and the increasingly apparent involvement of politicians and civil servants in rampant corruption.
That's the threat the minister should be addressing.

He praised the party's manifesto - known as the People's Mandate - as the foundation of its vision and policy direction. The manifesto outlines plans to reclaim dignity, land and mineral resources, people's power, the economy, human capital and technological capacity, public spaces, safety and security, as well as South Africa's sovereignty and its position in Africa and the world. 'Together, these pillars embody the uncompromising vision of the MKP as the only true hope for the last stage of the total liberation of the South African people - a liberation not just from apartheid's political chains, but from economic captivity, poverty, unemployment and neo-colonial domination that continue to strangle our nation,' Zuma said. He took aim at the newly formed Government of National Unity (GNU), calling it a 'compromised' arrangement and contrasting it with MKP, which he said upheld the 'spirit of our forebears to deliver full freedom, dignity and prosperity to every South African'. Zuma also reflected on South Africa's growing relationship with Ghana, highlighting more than 20 bilateral agreements in areas such as trade, defence, agriculture, and ICT - including a recent visa waiver for ordinary passport holders. Since 2019, cooperation between the two countries has been elevated to a presidential-level Bi-National Commission, Zuma said, enabling real accountability and progress. 'These agreements matter not just on paper, but in action - driving economic integration, tech exchange, cultural bonds and stronger people-to-people links,' he said. Zuma commended Ghana for its stance on the Western Sahara dispute, backing Morocco's autonomy plan over the separatist agenda. 'Some may disagree, but I say: Africa must not be divided for the convenience of outsiders. The era of Balkanising Africa to serve foreign agendas is over. By prioritising stability and integration, Ghana has once again placed itself at the forefront of Pan-African leadership,' Zuma said. He warned against external interference in African affairs, declaring: 'The days of Africa dancing to foreign drums are over. We shall beat our own drum.' Zuma also called on African nations to unite against Western dominance. 'The West built its power by chaining Africa. The new generation of Africans must build our power by breaking those chains,' he said. 'Africa must produce not just employees for foreign corporations, but inventors, thinkers and builders of African systems. We must move from the classroom to the policy room, from the laboratory to the marketplace, from the lecture hall to the halls of power.'

Environmental activists protest against Standard Bank and Total Energies over fossil fuel financing
Koketso Phasha | Published 17 minutes ago A coalition of activist groups, Stop East African Crude Oil Pipeline (StopEACOP) embarked on a protest in Johannesburg with the intention of voicing their frustrations against Standard Bank and Total Energies for their alleged exploitative and non-environmentally friendly activities in Africa. According to StopEACOP, Standard Bank has positioned itself as a chief accomplice to Total Energies' wreckage across the African continent and is bankrolling the exploitation, destruction and harm imposed onto so many communities. In a memorandum on Tuesday, the coalition said to Total Energies: "We, organisations, communities and ordinary people from across South Africa and the African continent, are united in our unequivocal condemnation of Total Energies and its destructive fossil fuel operations. "As communities and activists demonstrate, come together and speak out through this week of action (18-24 August 2025), we send a clear and urgent message that Total must back off." Zaki Mamdoo, a coordinator of the StopEACOP outlined that the demonstration, part of a continentwide Week of Action (August 18-24), calls on the bank to sever ties with the oil giant over alleged plundering and ecological destruction across Africa. Expressing contentment and hope to succeed, the coalition said: "We welcome the decision of the Western Cape High Court setting aside the exploration right granted to Total Energies and its partners to pursue offshore oil and gas drilling along South Africa's southwest coast. The court found that the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) and Total Energies failed to adequately consult affected communities and ignored the serious environmental and climate risks posed by the project. This judgment is a victory for coastal communities, small-scale fishers, and environmental defenders who have long resisted the imposition of destructive projects that threaten their livelihoods, marine ecosystems, and our collective future." Mamdoo said: "For years, Standard Bank has not only ignored the legitimate concerns of communities but has met peaceful protest with arrogance and repression. Instead of engaging in good faith, Standard Bank has chosen to brutalise activists, dismiss civil society, and double down on investments that endanger millions of lives across Africa." StopEACOP said Standard Bank has by virtue of financing the Mozambique LNG Project, Coral FLNG (Floating LNG) Facility and East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) contributed to the destruction of communities across Africa, the carbon emissions driving climate collapse, the violence, human rights abuses, and ecological destruction that accompany these so-called 'developments. Under pressure from protestors, Total Energies committed to providing a written response to the memorandum within 14 days. Similarly, a Standard Bank representative promised a written response to the demands within 14 days, despite one protestor angrily demanding an immediate answer.
