THE CONGRESS high command is yet to finalise the appointment of its district committees (DCC) in Gujarat — a pilot project for empowering DCCs across the country — but it has already held meetings with AICC observers appointed to oversee the same exercise in Haryana and MP. Sources said the observers for the two states met the Congress high command virtually Friday. The observers submitted reports to the party leadership and gave suggestions for DCC chiefs, it is learnt. For Gujarat, the observers had submitted the reports for each district more than a month ago, but the appointments are pending.

TO APPRECIATE the hard work of jail staff in Delhi Prisons, DG (Prisons) Satish Golcha has approved a new insignia — specifying Delhi Karagaar in red and blue and including the national emblem — for all the uniformed personnel in the department, asking them to wear it on the upper right side, above the name tag, from July 1. A communication to senior jail staff stated that Delhi Prisons is a torch-bearer institution of the country for its various correctional programmes for its inmates. It is important to highlight that throughout the three waves of Covid-19 pandemic, the Delhi Prisons administration has tirelessly endeavoured to safeguard the health of around 20,000 inmates from the risk of infection in the confined environment of the prisons, the communication stated.

Thiruvananthapuram: Close on the heels of widespread protests against governor-chancellor Rajendra Arlekar 's directive to observe 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' in higher education institutions on Aug 14, Kerala University college development committee director in-charge sent a circular to affiliated colleges against organising programmes without the consent of 'appropriate authorities'. Committee director in-charge Biju V had on Monday shared with affiliated colleges a communication he received from the office of vice-chancellor regarding chancellor's directive to observe Aug 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. In the new communique to affiliated colleges on Tuesday, reportedly at govt's behest, Biju pointed out that chief minister openly declared Kerala govt's policy regarding the commemoration of Partition Horrors Day. "In this context, steps in this regard may be taken with the consent of appropriate authorities," Biju said. Later, the committee director expressed his wish to relinquish his charge and informed VC in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal about it. CPM and Congress functionaries came out against governor's efforts to observe Partition Horrors Day, an idea first mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few years ago. Student organisations and youth organisations of both CPM and Congress registered strong protests against the proposal and said they wouldn't let such observance be forced upon students on campuses. According to sources, Raj Bhavan sent a letter to all universities a month ago regarding the Aug 14 programme. However, universities acted upon the same only after Raj Bhavan reminded them. The college development committee director in-charge's decision to send a circular nullifying the directive he shared with affiliated colleges, on VC's instructions, underscores the depth of the anarchy prevailing in the university. While Kerala, Kannur and KTU vice-chancellors asked officials concerned to share the chancellor's directive with principals of affiliated colleges, other ad hoc VCs instructed registrars concerned to take further steps. Cusat VC issued a directive to organise a seminar on the subject. The chancellor asked VCs to organise seminars or theatre performances to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Ludhiana: Councillor alleges irregularities in vending zone relocation
Congress councillor from Ward 94, Bhupinder Kaur, has written to the ministry of housing and urban affairs, accusing the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) of misusing public funds in shifting a vending zone project from the West constituency to the North constituency. In her complaint, Kaur alleged that a ₹ 1.2-crore Smart City project sanctioned for Zone D was moved to Zone A without due approval. She claimed the relocation was done to benefit an acquaintance allegedly planning to set up an illegal slaughterhouse, and that the project is being built on a prohibited green belt. 'This is a clear misuse of Smart City funds. Public money is being spent on an unnecessary project at an unsuitable location, all for personal gain,' she stated, urging the ministry to stop construction and order an impartial inquiry. MC officials rejected the allegations, saying the project was relocated to provide more space for vendors and reduce congestion. 'The change was made in the interest of public convenience, and there is nothing unlawful about it,' said Shamlal Gupta, superintending engineer of the MC.
