Among the host of greetings that President Droupadi Murmu received on her 67th birthday on Friday, one message stood out for its special wish in the President's native language — Santhali. Sent by the Ukrainian embassy in New Delhi, 'Sagun Janam Maha', which translates to 'a blessed birthday', had the photo of Ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk presenting his credentials to Murmu. The embassy also greeted the President in English and in their own language alongside the Santhali greetings.

THE CONGRESS high command is yet to finalise the appointment of its district committees (DCC) in Gujarat — a pilot project for empowering DCCs across the country — but it has already held meetings with AICC observers appointed to oversee the same exercise in Haryana and MP. Sources said the observers for the two states met the Congress high command virtually Friday. The observers submitted reports to the party leadership and gave suggestions for DCC chiefs, it is learnt. For Gujarat, the observers had submitted the reports for each district more than a month ago, but the appointments are pending.

TO APPRECIATE the hard work of jail staff in Delhi Prisons, DG (Prisons) Satish Golcha has approved a new insignia — specifying Delhi Karagaar in red and blue and including the national emblem — for all the uniformed personnel in the department, asking them to wear it on the upper right side, above the name tag, from July 1. A communication to senior jail staff stated that Delhi Prisons is a torch-bearer institution of the country for its various correctional programmes for its inmates. It is important to highlight that throughout the three waves of Covid-19 pandemic, the Delhi Prisons administration has tirelessly endeavoured to safeguard the health of around 20,000 inmates from the risk of infection in the confined environment of the prisons, the communication stated.

Govt not releasing relief funds for rain damage: MLA Kamath
Mangaluru: Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath conducted an emergency meeting with officials of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) regarding several issues related to his constituency on Friday. The MLA accused the govt of not releasing relief for emergency repairs of houses damaged due to heavy rains. Speaking at the meeting, the legislator noted that many people within the corporation's jurisdiction are facing severe difficulties due to rain damage. Previously, under BJP rule, a decision was made to allocate up to Rs 40,000 in relief funds for emergency repairs to homes in all 60 wards, with 10 homes per ward, during natural disasters. However, now that the BJP's term ended and the corporation is under the state Congress govt's control through district administration, it is inexcusable that no relief funds have been distributed, said Kamath. No one has the authority to block the previous council's decision, and relief funds should be distributed to the people immediately, he demanded. Speaking at an event here to mark one year of the BJP govt in Odisha, PM Modi said, "In the past year, Odisha has embraced the mantra of both vikas (development) and virasat (heritage) and has moved forward rapidly." Modi, who inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 18,600 crore, pointed out that development of entire eastern India, including Odisha, gained momentum after the BJP govt came to power in the state a year ago. He also said that from Paradip to Jajpur, the industrial sector is expanding in the state. "This is benefiting the minerals and port economy in Odisha. The state is rapidly moving towards becoming India's petrochemical hub," the PM said. Modi, who released the Odisha Vision 2036 and 2047 documents prepared by the state govt, appreciated the fact that the BJP govt is not limited to just one year's achievements or thinking about five years. "It is working on what will happen in Odisha's development road map for the coming decades. The state govt has made a special plan for when Odisha will be 100 years old in 2036. Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, was wrong in suggesting there was no evidence Iran is building a nuclear weapon. Trump contested intelligence assessments relayed earlier this year by his spy chief that Tehran was not building a nuclear weapon when he spoke with reporters at an airport in Morristown, New Jersey. "She's wrong," Trump said. In March, Gabbard testified to Congress that the U.S. intelligence community continued to believe that Tehran was not building a nuclear weapon. "The (intelligence community) continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon," she said. On Friday, Gabbard said in a post on the social media platform X that: "America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly. President Trump has been clear that can't happen, and I agree." She said the media has taken her March testimony "out of context" and was trying to "manufacture division." The White House has said Trump would weigh involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict over the next two weeks. On Tuesday, Trump made similar comments to reporters about Gabbard's assessment. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has justified a week of airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets by saying Tehran was on the verge of having a warhead. Iran denies developing nuclear weapons, saying its uranium enrichment program is only for peaceful purposes. Some experts, however, believe it could take Iran a much shorter time to build and deliver an untested crude nuclear device, although there would be no guarantee it would work. Trump has frequently disavowed the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, which he and his supporters have charged - without providing proof - are part of a "deep state" cabal of U.S. officials opposed to his presidency. Gabbard, a fierce Trump loyalist, has been among the president's backers who have aired such allegations. The Republican president repeatedly clashed with U.S. spy agencies during his first term, including over an assessment that Moscow worked to sway the 2016 presidential vote in his favor and his acceptance of Russian President Vladimir Putin's denials.
