FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is dealing with a minor muscle injury in his right leg after being hurt in the opening minutes of Saturday's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, the club said Sunday.
Messi underwent tests on his right leg after experiencing discomfort following a play in which he fell while being challenged by a pair of Necaxa defenders, in a game Inter Miami won on penalty kicks.
His timeline for return isn't yet known, though it seems unlikely that he will be available for Miami's next Leagues Cup match against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday.
Inter Miami said in a release that Messi's medical clearance will depend on how he responds to treatment.
Messi slapped his hand against the ground in frustration after the fall, which happened in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's match. He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th. He then immediately walked to the locker room.
Miami coach Javier Mascherano said after the game that Messi wasn't in any pain.

Josh Allen's NFL success not a surprise to former teammate Eberhardt

Ayden Eberhardt isn't the least bit surprised that Josh Allen has developed into one of the NFL's top quarterbacks. Article content Long before Allen led the Buffalo Bills to dominance in the AFC East, he spent three years (2015-17) at Wyoming, where he and Eberhardt were teammates for two years. The six-foot-one, 200-pound Eberhardt is in his third season as a receiver with the CFL's B.C. Lions. Article content Article content And it didn't take Eberhardt — a former high school quarterback — long to understand Allen was different. Article content 'The first time I got there, we were just warming up,' Eberhardt said. 'And after about 10 minutes I look up and he's like 80 yards down the field flicking the ball to me. Article content 'I was like, 'What? This is crazy. College is unreal. I knew the quarterbacks were good but, damn!' Arm talent, playmaking ability, leadership, he has it all so its been really cool to see him do his thing in Buffalo.' Article content Buffalo selected the six-foot-five, 237-pound Allen in the first round, No. 7 overall, of the 2018 NFL draft and he became the starter the following season. Allen has led the Bills to six playoff appearances, five straight AFC titles and two conference championship appearances. Article content Allen's best passing season with Buffalo came in 2020 when he threw for 4,544 yards with 37 touchdowns. But he was named the NFL MVP last season after recording 3,731 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions while running for 531 yards (5.2-yard average) and 12 touchdowns in leading the Bills to a 13-4 regular-season mark. Article content Article content Buffalo dispatched Denver (31-7) and Baltimore (27-25) in the playoffs before losing a heartbreaking 32-29 decision to Kansas City in the AFC championship game. Article content Article content Unlike his college days, Allen has shown a deft passing touch with Buffalo. He enters the '25 campaign with a career 63.3 passing percentage with 195 TDs and 84 interceptions. He has also run for 4,142 yards (5.5-yard average) and 65 touchdowns. Article content Allen completed 365-of-649 passes (56.2 per cent) for 5,066 yards with 44 TDs and 21 interceptions over 27 games at Wyoming. The 29-year-old California native also ran 237 times for 767 yards (3.2-yard average) with 12 TDs. Article content 'The Josh Allen you see now is the Josh Allen I've always known,' Eberhardt said. 'His work ethic is probably what I'd credit his NFL success to and everything that's come with it. Article content 'At the end of the day, the guy just wants to win and he's going to do anything and everything he can to do that. In college, he showed flashes of these crazy plays of hurdling someone or running around and making a ridiculous throw right on the money.'

Calgary Stampeders in CFL's Week 10: QB Vernon Adams Jr. returns, as do Bombers

Article content Clutch receiver Clark Barnes (ankle) — an underrated player in the passing game — is back practising fully with the offence. Article content And fellow pass-catchers Jalen Philpot (hamstring) and Damien Alford (hamstring) have both been limited participants in sessions. Article content Also limited in practice has been veteran receiver Tevin Jones, another important key to the offensive cog, after he left last week's affair with a hip injury. Article content If any two of the above are unable to return to face the Blue Bombers, the Stamps are likely to return to CFL rookies Daylen Baldwin and Vyshonne Janusas, who caught three and two passes respectively, in their debuts last week. Article content 'Yeah, adversity builds character, and it shows character,' said Adams, when asked about the performance of the two newbies in the nation's capital. 'A lot of these young guys stepped up, and they did what they can do to help the team out. Article content 'And so we've just got to keep taking those steps, little by little. We've got to keep bringing these young guys along with us to make sure they're ready for anything in the future and things like that. Article content Article content Also back practising fully for the Stamps are RB Eno Benjamin (load management), LB Kelechi Anyalebechi (foot) and DB Jackson Sombach (hamstring). Article content 'Yeah, I'd say we had a good chunk of the guys back practising — it looked like — full (Monday),' added Dickenson. 'Now, how do they respond after that? We'll see. Some guys we've held out, as well, that we think can play, but we'll have a better beat on that (throughout the week), and we'll see how they react.' Article content What do the Bombers bring to McMahon? Article content After starting out of the blocks 3-0, the Blue Bombers were stunned twice in three weeks by the upstart Stampeders — 37-16 in the Stampede Bowl, and 41-20 in the rematch in Manitoba. Article content Those losses made up the majority of a three-game skid for the defending West Division champions, which they halted last week in a 40-31 takedown of the visiting Toronto Argonauts (2-6). Article content That victory came without QB Zach Collaros in the lineup, as veteran backup Chris Streveler managed the day with 17-of-21 for 173 yards — despite throwing three INTs — in what was a run-heavy effort by the victors. Article content Article content But Collaros is expected to return to run the show for the Bombers against the Stampeders, with head coach Mike O'Shea telling reporters in Winnipeg the future hall-of-famer is 'trending towards playing.' Article content Remember that the QB was knocked out of the second game against the Stampeders in mid-July on a heavy hit laid on him by defensive lineman Clarence Hicks. Article content Eight-time CFL all-star offensive lineman Stanley Bryant is possible after missing the last few games with an ankle injury. Article content Article content Regardless of who lines up Saturday for the Bombers, the Stamps insist they'll be ready. Article content Not only does Week 10 offer a few more days between games compared to previous weeks, allowing the Red and White a longer rest after their first two-loss run of the schedule, but the extra time off gave them an added day of practice to prepare for the affair. Article content 'We've played Winnipeg twice already,' Dickenson said. 'Not to say that we don't need to do different things and do some things to scheme them, but (the extra day) was more about ourselves and work on ourselves — and not even really about plays. It was about techniques and trying to get better at little, small skills.
