For the state's services sector, the hotel and tourism sub-sectors, along with support services, were the main contributors. 'In terms of value, basic metal products recorded RM4.3 billion, followed by non-metallic mineral products at RM2.5 billion, and wood products at RM99.1 million. The hotel and tourism sector recorded RM205 million, and support services amounted to RM37.9 million,' the ministry said in a written reply published on the Dewan Rakyat portal today.
The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Jonathan Yasin (GRS-Ranau), who asked about the total foreign investment made in Sabah over the past 10 years and at present.

UKM Confers Honorary Doctorate In Social Business On Bangladesh Chief Adviser

Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir (right) conferres an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business to Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus (left) at the Special Convocation Ceremony at the Tuanku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Hospital, the UKM Specialist Children's Hospital, today. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Chief Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Business by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) at a special convocation ceremony today. Yunus, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, received the doctorate from UKM Chancellor, Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir at Auditorium Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani, UKM Specialist Children's Hospital. "In recognition of your remarkable achievements in reducing poverty and transforming countless lives in the People's Republic of Bangladesh, it is my great pleasure, on behalf of UKM, to present you the Honorary Doctorate in Social Business," Tuanku Muhriz said in his brief royal decree. Also present were Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and the Prime Minister's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Delivering his public lecture after receiving the doctorate, Yunus said the award was more than a personal honour, as he viewed it as recognition of the strength, courage and determination of the people of Bangladesh, especially the millions of young and women entrepreneurs. 'This recognition reminds me of my responsibility to work for the dreams of our young people. We have seen time and again that when the most disadvantaged people, especially women, receive small financial support and basic training, they bring lasting change to their communities. 'From working as an economist to founding Grameen Bank, one belief has always guided me: people are not poor because they lack talent or dreams, but because the system never gave them a fair chance. 'Our financial system serves the rich, not the poor. So I created a way for even the poorest to get small loans, start businesses, and change their lives,' said Yunus. The social entrepreneur, economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate is best known for pioneering microcredit and microfinance, which provide small loans to impoverished individuals without requiring collateral, enabling them to start small businesses and break the cycle of poverty.

Internet Coverage In Populated Areas In Malaysia Reaches 98.82 Per Cent

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Internet and communication coverage in populated areas across Malaysia has reached 98.82 per cent as of July 31, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. For 5G coverage, he said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed the construction of 7,489 transmitter sites, collectively providing 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas. 'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7 per cent,' he said in reply to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang) at Dewan Rakyat today. Dr Zulkafperi had wanted to know the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as the strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas such as Sungai Burong, Sekinchan, and Permatang, with particular focus on those within the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency. Fahmi said that in Tanjong Karang, internet and communication coverage in populated areas stands at 99.75 per cent, while the Sungai Besar constituency has recorded a coverage rate of 99.99 per cent. Additionally, he noted that the second 5G network by U Mobile began operating on July 14, with 1,232 sites upgraded to support 5G coverage. On the JENDELA 1 initiative, Fahmi said it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for JENDELA 2 are currently being reviewed and will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). According to Fahmi, the planning process requires assessment of suitable service delivery methods that are fit-for-purpose, as well as the capability of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the project's capital and operational expenditures. 'The types of service delivery solutions currently under consideration are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of Internet services via satellite technology,' he explained.
