Plans submitted to 'modernise' shopping centre after demolition plans scrapped

STV News13 hours ago

Plans to 'redevelop and modernise' a shopping centre previously earmarked for demolition have been submitted by the owner.
Buchanan Galleries is set to be reconfigured under the plans by Land Securities PLC (Landsec) in a bid to boost the retail, food and drink and leisure experience for customers.
The company had previously proposed demolishing the mall in 2022 but u-turned on the decision in October 2024.
They said not demolishing the site would allow for work, which commenced last year, to be delivered quicker and be 'less disruptive and carbon-intensive'.
The mall will instead undergo 'several enhancements' with more high street retail frontage, and a more engaging with the street front.
The plans could also include creating spaces for new leisure and dining concepts, including a destination food hall, new attractions with improved accessibility for all, and a modern digital art strategy to support brand, civic activities, and future-proof retail innovation across the city.

Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: 'There is a renewed and growing confidence in Glasgow, with significant development across the city centre and rising investor interest.
'We welcome proposals that align with the very significant public investment going into our city centre and take forward the ongoing transformation that we are now witnessing.'
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive Stuart Partick said the plans have the 'ambition and momentum' the city needs to adapt and thrive.
'It's great to see continued development in the heart of Glasgow, especially through a refreshed approach that promises to deliver real, tangible benefits quickly,' he added.
'The site is a key strategic asset, and its redevelopment represents a major step forward in supporting the city centre's sustainable recovery, renewal, and long-term growth.
Stuart Orr, Senior Development Manager, Landsec said the plans are a 'direct response' to the community's call for improved retail and leisure spaces in Glasgow.
'Extensive stakeholder engagement over the years has shaped a solution that truly reflects the priorities of the local community,' he said.
'In collaboration with Glasgow's award-winning Threesixty Architecture, we have crafted an exciting and flexible design to accommodate both global and local brands.'
He added: 'Our plan prioritises the swift enhancement of existing elements of the centre to provide quick benefits to visitors.'

Chelsea fans accuse club of 'exploiting loyalty' as Premier League make contact

Chelsea have increased ticket prices by an average of 17 per cent in the last two seasons and the club's official supporters' group have vented their fury at the ownership, accusing them of alienating the core fanbase Chelsea fans have slammed a new ticket pricing strategy and accused the club of 'exploiting the loyalty of those people who are the lifeblood of the club.' The Chelsea Supporters' Trust says season ticket prices have increased by an average of 17 per cent in the last two years and members are angry at new booking fees, decreasing concessions and a £60 'priority' membership. ‌ They have now surveyed their members and the CST says it is joining the Football Supporters' Association's nationwide Stop Exploiting Loyalty campaign. ‌ A CST spokesperson said: 'Piece by piece, Chelsea FC is alienating a large part of our core fan base with decisions that will slowly force supporters to pick and choose which games they attend. 'The exploitation of members is also a worry, and we are deeply concerned that the increasingly bad deal that members have will negatively impact our club for generations to come. 'This should be a huge wake-up call to the owners and the senior leadership team within the club. Supporters are rejecting the decisions made by the club and are evidently unhappy with the current path being taken. 'Not only is it ethically wrong to exploit the loyalty of the lifeblood of our club, but it is strategically short-sighted and obliterates any trust or goodwill that had started to be built by recent positive initiatives.' The Premier League has already contacted Chelsea over complaints that a ticket resale company part-owned by co-owner Todd Boehly, Vivid Seats, was selling seats for sky high prices. ‌ Chelsea reported a pre-tax profit of £128.4m last year and could earn £97m from the Club World Cup. Less than 30 per cent of members thought prices were acceptable. The CST added: 'Despite record-breaking profits, Chelsea FC has broken its commitment to 'maximise all other revenue streams before increasing costs for supporters' by introducing a range of new policies that hit the pockets of loyal supporters. 'The CST has consistently warned the club that time after time they are making poor choices that infuriate supporters. This statistic is therefore really alarming and cannot be ignored.' Chelsea said recently they had consulted with the Fan Advisory Board and added: 'As a club, our priority is to ensure that we are making the right decisions for the long-term sustainability and success of the club.' WhatsApp banned from phones of House of Representative members

The US House of Representatives has banned WhatsApp on mobile devices for its members, citing "high risk" due to potential security concerns, lack of data transparency, and absence of stored data encryption. A memo from the Office of Cybersecurity outlined the ban and recommended alternative messaging platforms including Microsoft Teams, Amazon Wickr, Apple iMessage, FaceTime, and Signal. Meta, WhatsApp 's parent company, strongly disagreed with the ban, asserting that WhatsApp provides a higher level of security than other approved applications. The ban follows a previous incident, dubbed "Signalgate," where a journalist mistakenly accessed a Signal group chat with high-ranking administration officials, leading to the sharing of sensitive military operations information. The "Signalgate" incident resulted in a federal lawsuit against several cabinet members for alleged violation of federal law regarding message preservation, with Trump blaming a "lower level" employee.
