Omar Abdullah scales wall to visit July 13 martyrs' graves in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and several cabinet ministers on Monday scaled a wall to visit the graves of the July 13 martyrs in Srinagar after being stopped by police.
In a video he shared on his X account, he can be seen walking towards the graveyard with security personnel. Upon reaching there, he climbed the wall to enter the graveyard as the gate appeared to be locked.
'Paid my respects & offered Fatiha at the graves of the martyrs of 13th July 1931. The unelected government tried to block my way forcing me to walk from Nawhatta chowk. They blocked the gate to Naqshband Sb shrine forcing me to scale a wall. They tried to physically grapple me but I was not going to be stopped today,' he said in a post on X.
In another video, police personnel can be seen trying to restrict him from entering.
Sharing a video of the incident, he further wrote, 'This is the physical grappling I was subjected to but I am made of sterner stuff & was not to be stopped. I was doing nothing unlawful or illegal. In fact these 'protectors of the law' need to explain under what law they were trying to stop us from offering Fatiha.'

Many prominent leaders of the Union Territory were kept under house arrest on Sunday, prohibiting them from paying their respects on July 13, which is considered Martyrs Day in the UT, PTI reported.
Abdullah also alleged that when he expressed his desire to offer prayer at the graveyard on Sunday, bunkers were set up to stop him.
'It is sad that on the instructions of the people who claim that their responsibility is the security and 'law and order, we were not allowed to offer 'fateha' here. We were kept in house arrest (on Sunday). When gates opened, I expressed to the control room my desire to offer fateha. Within minutes, bunkers were put up and they were not removed late into the night,' Abdullah told reporters, as quoted by PTI.
What happened on July 13?
On July 13, 1931, a group of Kashmiris gathered outside Srinagar Central Jail to protest the trial of Abdul Qadeer, who called on Kashmiris against Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh. However, Singh's forces opened fire at them. In total, 22 people were killed.
Since then, July 13 has been observed as Martyrs' Day in Jammu and Kashmir to honour those who lost their lives. It used to be a public holiday before the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into two UTs in August 2019. The administration dropped the day from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020, PTI reported.

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed the main Opposition party, the BJP, to hold a rally and a public meeting in Siliguri on July 21, coinciding with the ruling TMC's annual mega Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata. The bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, however, also imposed conditions — the rally can be held between 11 am to 5 pm; a total of 10,000 people will be allowed to attend the event; the program has to be within the jurisdiction of Tin Bati Mor and Chunbhati Football Ground; and not more than 100 people should take part in the rally. Last week, the BJP had approached the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court, challenging the decision of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate denying permission for a rally by the party in Siliguri town on July 21 to protest 'rising incidents of crime against women' in different parts of the state. The BJP had planned a rally to Uttarkanya, the state's north Bengal secretariat in Siliguri, but the court directed that it be held at a ground at Chunabhatti in the north Bengal city. The state government had argued that possible congestion could occur as large numbers of people would be travelling to Kolkata for the TMC's programme. UP man hides religious identity, age; abducts NEET aspirant from Kota
Kota, Jul 17 (PTI) A 25-year-old man befriended a minor medical aspirant on social media by hiding his religious identity and age, and abducted her from her hostel in Rajasthan's Kota, police said on Thursday. The accused, identified as Lucknow resident Mohammed Rajak, has been arrested and booked for kidnapping and wrongful confinement under sections of BNS and Juvenile Justice Act and sent to judicial custody on Wednesday, they said. The girl has been rescued, the police added. The 15-year-old girl, a native of Bihar, was preparing for NEET in Kota while living in a hostel, they said. The girl revealed that Rajak introduced him as 18- year-old Aadi from Lucknow on Instagram and befriended her around six months ago. Since then she had been in contact with him on social media, CWC chairperson Rajendra Singh Rathod told on Thursday. The accused reached Kota by a hired cab earlier last week and lured the girl into leaving Kota with him. On July 11, they left for Lucknow by cab, Rathod said. On the way, the girl got suspicious of the youth when he made her switch off her mobile and crushed her SIM card into pieces. The girl grew more suspicious when she heard him speaking to someone on call in a different dialect, the CWC chairperson said. Stunned with revelation, the girl somehow managed to get Rajak's phone and called her sister, who asked her to immediately reach the nearest police station, he said. Meanwhile, in Kota the girl's hostel caretaker registered a case of kidnapping the same day the accused with the girl had left Kota, the police said. Taking serious note of the matter, the City SP formed three teams that tracked the cab owner and its driver within hours after the report and convinced the driver to reach the nearest police station in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi, Kundadi Circle Inspector Arvind Bhardwaj said. At Jhansi police station, Rajak was arrested and the minor was taken into custody and was produced before CWC on Sunday on basis of statements during counselling, he said. The accused was produced before court on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody, he added.
