Trump, Op Sindoor: Congress seeks to rally INDIA bloc before stormy Monsoon session

India Today8 hours ago
Ahead of the monsoon session, the Congress is looking to corner the government on multiple issues and has called a meeting of INDIA allies in Delhi on Saturday evening. The party's General Secretary (Organisation), KC Venugopal, has reached out to top leaders of the INDIA bloc, including the Samajwadi Party, RJD, JMM, Shiv Sena (UBT), National Conference, NCP (Sharad Pawar), CPI, CPI(M), DMK, IUML, RSP and others for the meeting at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence. The 'dinner diplomacy' is scheduled just a day before the Congress party's internal meeting ahead of the crucial monsoon session.advertisementToo short a notice?
However, the invitation may have come a little too late for everyone to attend. Sources say some allies have complained that the notice was too short. Others have suggested postponing the meeting to next week.Sources in Shiv Sena (UBT) said Uddhav Thackeray will not be able to attend Saturday's meeting in person. He has already informed the Congress leadership, citing prior scheduled engagements over the weekend.'They should have told us beforehand. We've asked the Congress to shift it to next week, or perhaps Uddhav ji could join via video conferencing,' a source said on condition of anonymity.Keeping an arm's length? Some parties are also distancing themselves from the INDIA bloc altogether. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have kept away from this outreach. The Congress and AAP have had strained ties since the Delhi assembly elections, and the relationship has further deteriorated. AAP leader Sanjay Singh appeared unaware of the meeting.'I have no idea about any such meeting. The AAP has its own list of issues, including Operation Sindoor, bulldozer politics in Delhi, schools being shut down in Uttar Pradesh, the Air India crash, and other burning topics we plan to highlight,' he said in a phone conversation. He reiterated that the INDIA bloc was formed only for the Lok Sabha elections and that AAP is not officially part of it. The sentiment seems mutual, as AAP has reportedly received no communication from Congress regarding the meeting.TMC, too, seems unlikely to attend. Sources in the party said that preparations for Martyrs' Day on July 21 are underway, and MPs will only join the monsoon session on July 22.Common issues to unite?Despite the setbacks, Congress remains confident that some key issues could still serve as rallying points for opposition unity. One major topic will be former US President Donald Trump's comments against India over Operation Sindoor, which Congress plans to link to the Modi government's foreign policy failures.Another issue Congress believes can bring the opposition together is the alleged irregularities in the Bihar caste survey. Congress hopes to connect the dots between voter list discrepancies in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Bihar — suggesting a broader voter data manipulation that could eventually affect West Bengal.advertisementCongress also expects the federal structure debate to resonate with regional parties. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has already written to the Prime Minister demanding full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. The party believes this demand, paired with its campaign for restoring democratic rights in the region, could be a unifying cause.Other likely discussion points include atrocities against women in Odisha and other BJP-ruled states, and the recent Air India crash.- Ends

‘Common man's issue': House panel flags Aadhaar issues, seeks review

NEW DELHI: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) headed by Congress MP K C Venugopal on Thursday called for review of the functioning of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and raised concerns over erroneous Aadhaar details, flagging that this denies people access to government benefits. 'This is a common man's issue. We flagged various problems and have raised several questions,' Venugopal told the press after the meeting. Venugopal said Aadhaar-related issues directly affect common people and require serious attention, especially those linked to biometric verification. The panel will examine the matter in detail. The committee, sources said, told the authorities to put out a circular at the earliest to inform people of the requirements to get Aadhaar and look into simplifying the process. The panel also recorded briefings from officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the UIDAI. According to sources, several MPs raised concerns of data breach, to which the UIDAI officials replied that their central repository is unbreachable. Sources said some MPs were of the view that since Aadhaar is considered residency proof and does not certify one's citizenship, authorities should reconsider if this alone should be the basis for identifying eligible beneficiaries of government welfare schemes. Only an Indian citizen should be entitled to government benefits, a source said, noting that scandals related to people with fake documents getting Aadhaar have often come to light.

BJP MPs express concern over non-citizens accessing Aadhaar for voter ID, passport

Some BJP members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament are learnt to have expressed concern over what they see as instances of non-citizens procuring Aadhaar and using it to access government benefits and obtain voter ID cards. In their view, there is a need to see how such people, who obtained Aadhaar in early years when the system was less stringent, can be filtered out. The committee headed by Congress leader K C Venugopal, which is discussing the functioning of the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), also met Thursday. Parliamentary committee proceedings are privileged and details of exchanges between members during meetings are not made public. The BJP leaders have raised the issue at a time when the Election Commission is undertaking a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar to ensure that ineligible persons do not get to vote. The 11 eligibility documents that those who did not feature in the 2003 electoral rolls need to furnish do not include Aadhaar, though the Supreme Court has suggested that such documents be considered for the SIR exercise. Some members, it is learnt, have pointed out instances in Bihar, Jharkhand and Karnataka of non-citizens acquiring Aadhaar and using the document to obtain other documents like voter ID cards and passports. The members have underlined that State welfare measures are meant for citizens and not foreigners. They flagged that the process of procuring Aadhaar cards was less stringent earlier, and people could enrol on the basis of a self-declaration affidavit. It is learnt that the members have expressed concern over illegal immigrants claiming scarce resources meant for citizens, becoming voters and posing a threat to national security. The CAG has flagged 4.5 lakh instances of Aadhaar duplication.
