Air India flags fake X handles offering ‘help' to crash victims' kin
"We have flagged multiple handles that pretended to offer assistance. We don't want anyone to fall prey to fraudsters at such a vulnerable time," said a source familiar with the matter.
The deceit is not limited to social media. The airline's dedicated helplines, set up for grieving families and survivors, have received a staggering number of calls. While some heartbreaking, others bizarre.

"Just three days after the crash, a caller claimed that a friend on the flight was carrying their Louis Vuitton bag and demanded Rs 1.5 lakh as compensation," said the source.
Another wanted reimbursement for "precious jewellery" allegedly in a relative's luggage. One even asked for free international tickets for their entire family this winter, claiming to be a distant relative of a victim.
"Amid the massive outpouring of grief in the aftermath of India's worst air disaster in recent memory, a few individuals have been trying to use this situation to make a quick buck. It is painful to see some people, claiming to be related to the passengers, trying to take advantage of the situation," the source said.

Air India had set up two 24/7 helpline numbers to handle inquiries and provide support. On Day 1 alone, the helplines received more than 10,000 calls, many from inconsolable family members. "The volume was overwhelming, but it wasn't just that. The emotional trauma of listening to the raw grief of callers broke down many of our call centre staff. Some fainted, others needed counselling or medical help," the source said.
Air India did not respond to queries sent by TOI.
In the days following the crash, Air India announced an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each of the deceased and to the lone survivor to address immediate financial needs. These payments began rolling out from June 20.
Tata Sons, the airline's parent company, announced an additional compensation of Rs 1 crore for the next of kin of each victim. To ensure transparent and long-term support, a dedicated trust with a corpus of Rs 500 crore is being set up.
Support on the ground has also come from a massive network of volunteers. More than 500 staff from Air India and 17 other Tata Group companies were deployed in Ahmedabad, each bereaved family was assigned a dedicated caregiver trained to assist with grief management, logistics, and support.

PMPML passenger load dips after fare hike, revenue up
Pune: PMPML's passenger traffic dipped slightly a month after the PMPML increased its fares, but the revenue grew exponentially. "The passenger traffic did not increase significantly even after schools reopened from June 15. There can be several reasons behind it, but one of them can be the increased fares. We hope to see the passenger traffic improve this month," a PMPML official said. Figures provided by the PMPML revealed that the daily passenger traffic in buses stood at 10.16 lakh in May compared to 10.01 lakh in June. While the PMPML's total revenue in May was Rs44.11 crore, its revenue spiked to Rs62.77 crore in June. The revised fare structure came into effect from June 1. Now the service of PMPML will be under the scanner. Until now, it has not improved. We are keeping our fingers crossed," Sadashiv Ambad, who often travels in buses, said. According to a study of Parisar, an NGO, the PMPML's ridership went up by a meagre 5% in the past 10 years though its area of operations increased. "The number of buses per lakh population has decreased from 34 to 22 in the past 10 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Ideally, the city should have 60 buses per lakh population. This nominal ridership increase, juxtaposed with increasing private vehicle numbers, means the city will continue to suffer from congestion, pollution and road fatalities, Ranjit Gadgil, the programme director of Parisar, said. The PMPML's ridership increased to 12 lakh per day in 2023-24. There has been a steady decline since then. "While it can be attributed to the Metro, it also shows that overall public transport commuters are not increasing. The PMPML needs to be supported in playing the role of the sole public bus transport provider of Pune, which can change this situation," Gadgil said. (INSET) Transport utility's fleet size to be 3,500 buses by next year Nitin Narvekar, the joint managing director of the PMPML, said the transport utility's fleet consisted of 2,000 buses and 1,700 buses of them were on the road daily. "The numbers have improved slightly. Of the 400 CNG buses we were supposed to get and operate on contract, we have received 291 buses. The rest will come very soon. The PMPML is set to buy its own 1,000 CNG buses. The tender process is in its final stage. We expect the rollout of these buses within six months. Also, the PMPML will receive 1,000 e-buses under a scheme of the Centre. These buses will take some time to come, though. We expect our fleet size to increase to at least 3,500 buses by next year," he said.

Cab driver drugged and robbed of car and mobile phone
Bhopal: Two unidentified miscreants allegedly hired a cab offline near the Rani Kamalapati Railway Station, drugged the cab driver near Birla Mandir in the Arera Hills area, and fled with his vehicle and mobile phone. The victim remained unconscious the whole night, and his family members filed a missing person complaint with Ayodhya Nagar police. Later, after he was recovered, Ayodhya Nagar police registered a Zero FIR and transferred the case to Habibganj police, where a case was registered on Tuesday. The incident exposed jurisdictional issues of the police, as the victim's family was made to shuttle between multiple police stations before the FIR was finally registered. The victim could not come back to proper senses even after two days due to the effect of the sedatives. According to police, the victim, Arvind Jakhar, 30, a resident of Krishna Vihar Colony, Ayodhya Nagar, attached his car to an online cab service and drove the vehicle himself. On the evening of June 28, around 4 PM, he was waiting in his car near Gate Number-1 at Rani Kamalapati Railway Station. Two men, aged around 30–35, approached him and booked the ride offline. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Maringá (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo They said they wanted to visit DB Mall, New Market, and Birla Mandir, agreeing on a fare of Rs600. Arvind first drove them to DB Mall, where the suspects left the car for about 30 minutes, claiming they were shopping. They returned and asked to be taken to Birla Mandir. Upon reaching there, they claimed they forgot to bring sweets and directed Arvind to drive to a restaurant in TT Nagar. One of the men stayed in the car while the other brought back sweets, cold drinks, and disposable cups. They then asked to return to Birla Mandir. While driving, Arvind was offered a cold drink by the suspects. He initially refused, but they insisted, saying it would be disrespectful if he didn't drink. After just a couple of sips, Arvind began feeling dizzy. Within 10 minutes, as they reached Birla Mandir, the suspects asked him to park the car while they went for a brief temple visit. That was the last thing Arvind remembered. Back home, when Arvind didn't return and his phone was switched off, his brother grew worried. Around 12:30 AM, he went to Ayodhya Nagar Police Station and filed a missing person's complaint. He also shared Arvind's details with online cab driver groups and social media platforms. Found Unconscious in Katara Hills: The next morning, June 29, an auto driver spotted Arvind lying unconscious in Katara Hills and contacted his brother, who took him home. Arvind was still under the influence of intoxicants. Once he regained partial consciousness around 10 AM, Arvind and his brother went to Bag Sewania Police Station to report the incident. But police there said the incident occurred in Arera Hills jurisdiction and advised them to file the complaint there. At Arera Hills, officers redirected them again, saying the spiked drink was consumed in TT Nagar's jurisdiction. When they approached TT Nagar Police Station, they were once again sent back to Arera Hills, citing jurisdiction issues. They shuttled between police stations for hours. Meanwhile, Ayodhya Nagar Police, on getting information, registered a Zero FIR and forwarded the case diary to Habibganj Police. Ayodhya Nagar Police said that after the missing person report was filed, they were not informed by the family when Arvind was found. Investigation Officer ASI Sudhakar Sharma said that police are scanning CCTV footage from the railway station and surrounding areas to ascertain the identity of the suspects. Further investigations are ongoing.
