In a boost to railway infrastructure and regional connectivity , the PM Modi-led Cabinet on Wednesday approved two multitracking projects — the Koderma–Barkakana doubling in Jharkhand and the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the work will be completed within the next three years.Together, the plan will expand the Indian Railways network by 318 km, at a total estimated cost of Rs 6,405 crore.Both lines are critical for passenger and freight movement and will significantly reduce carbon emissions while enhancing operational efficiency. "Both projects are crucial for improving connectivity and boosting the economy, benefiting both tribal communities and the general population," said the union minister during a press conference.The Koderma–Barkakana (Arigada) doubling project, spanning 133 km, has been approved at a cost of Rs 3,063 crore. This line forms the shortest rail connection between Patna and Ranchi and is vital for intercity travel and logistics, according to a government presentation by Vaishnaw.The route passes through four districts in Jharkhand — Koderma, Chatra, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh — and will directly benefit 938 villages and a population of around 15 lakh. The scheme includes construction of 17 major bridges, 180 minor bridges, 42 Road Over Bridges (ROBs), and 13 Road Under Bridges (RUBs), reflecting significant infrastructure enhancement.Once operational, it is expected to handle an additional 30.4 million tonnes of cargo annually.It is also expected to save 163 crore kilograms of CO₂ emissions and 32 crore litres of diesel per year — an environmental benefit equivalent to planting seven crore trees, said Vaishnaw.Meanwhile, the second project, the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling, covers a 185 km stretch and has been cleared at an estimated cost of Rs 3,342 crore. This line connects Mangalore Port to Secunderabad and is critical for moving key commodities such as iron ore, coking coal, steel, fertilizers, petroleum products and foodgrains.The venture will enhance connectivity for Ballari and Chitradurga districts in Karnataka and Ananthpur district in Andhra Pradesh. With 19 stations, 29 major bridges, 230 minor bridges, 21 ROBs and 85 RUBs, the line will offer modernised infrastructure to support freight movement.The Ballari-Chikjajur doubling is likely to benefit around 13 lakh people across 470 villages and facilitate an additional 18.9 million tonnes of cargo annually.Like its Jharkhand counterpart, according to the union minister, this line promises significant environmental gains — reducing carbon emissions by 101 crore kilograms and saving 20 crore litres of diesel annually, equivalent to planting four crore trees.

'Till the completion of this process, short-term broadcasting has been arranged from Akashvani Indore six days a week. While other types of arrangements are being made in view of Simhastha: 2028, the achievement of getting Akashvani setup approved in Ujjain is important in the direction of expansion of official media,' he added. A well-equipped radio station was needed to encourage local artists of Ujjain and Malwa region, he said. 'Along with promoting art and culture, this will be a special outreach support for rural and tribal areas. Publicity of goverrnment schemes and expansion of community radio networks will prove useful. It will provide special assistance in reaching information about public welfare decisions to remote rural areas,' he said. Acclaimed academician Vasanthi Devi passes away at 87
V. Vasanthi Devi, former Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and former chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women, passed away in Chennai on Friday following a sudden heart attack. She was 87. Prof. Vasanthi Devi was the first woman vice chancellor of a university in Tamil Nadu, a post that she held for two consecutive terms from 1992 to 1998. After her retirement, she was a member of the State Planning Commission (SPC) before being appointed as the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women (TNSCW) in 2002. A high point in her long list of achievements was when she contested against AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa in the R.K. Nagar constituency in 2016 on the VCK symbol as the common candidate of the DMDK-led People's Welfare Front. Interestingly, the contest pitted her against a chief minister whose government appointed her as the Vice Chancellor, nominated her to the SPC and then to the TNSCW. Born in 1938 in Dindigul, Prof. Vasanthi Devi came from an illustrious family. She was the granddaughter of Vengal Chakkarai Chettiar, a freedom fighter, trade unionist and Christian theologist who was the president of the All India Trade Union Congress between 1954 and 1957. She came to Chennai (then Madras) in 1954 to join Queen Mary's College and later did her Masters from Presidency College. She did her PhD at University of the Philippines, Manila in 1980. Even while pursuing her academic career, she actively took up several causes – women's rights, child rights and, above all, quality education for all. Prof. Vasanthi Devi is survived by her son Narendra Subramanian, Professor of Political Science, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and daughter Ajantha Subramanian, author and anthropologist. Her body will be donated to the Kilpauk Medical College, the family said. 'She was a great intellectual but never lost touch with the grassroot,' said Sudha Ramalingam, Senior Advocate and a longtime companion. 'That connection made all the difference,' she added. She was active with Palli Kalvi Pathukappu Iyakkam (movement for saving school education) till her last days and strongly opposed the National Education Policy and advocated free and equitable education for children. Prof. Vasanthi Devi had also pushed for empowerment of School management committees. She firmly believed that schools, particularly in rural areas, must function with greater autonomy. She ensured that teachers and parents of underprivileged children were part of such committees, Ms. Ramalingam observed. CM's condolences In his condolence message, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said, 'She had been campaigning against the ill effects of the National Education Policy 2020, which Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed.' He also noted that she had voiced strong criticism of the Draft UGC Regulations, 2025. Mr. Stalin added that she had been vocal in opposing the role of religion in education. 'Her sudden demise is an irreparable loss to the education sector and to human rights-based activism.' In his condolence message, P. Shanmugam, CPI(M) State general secretary, said that Prof. Vasanthi Devi was a staunch supporter of the Left movement and always stood up for the rights of the common people.

"Big Headload Fell...": Railway Minister On What Led To Delhi Station Tragedy
New Delhi: A big headload that "fell from one of the passengers" led to the tragedy at New Delhi Railway Station that killed 18 people, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said today in response to a member's query. It resulted in the "tripping of passengers on the stairs", said the minister. In response to a query by Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman in Rajya Sabha, Mr Vaishnaw shared details from the report by a high-level inquiry committee that was constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the "unfortunate incident". Mr Suman had asked the Railway Minister about the status of the report of the committee constituted to investigate the stampede and the corrective steps taken by the government. Eighteen people were killed and 15 were injured on February 15 at the New Delhi Railway Station, which witnessed a surge of passengers waiting to board trains for Prayagraj -- where the Maha Kumbh was underway at the time. In a post on X that night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was "distressed by the stampede". However, in the Railway Minister's statement, there was no mention of the word "stampede". On the day of the tragedy, around 49,000 general tickets were sold at the railway stations, 13,000 more than the daily average, Mr Vaishnaw had informed the Lok Sabha in March. In his response today, the minister stated that sufficient crowd management measures were in place that day to manage the high number of passengers at the station. There was a "gradual increase of passenger density on the foot over bridge (FOB) after 8.15 pm", mentioned the written reply. "Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads, affecting smooth movement on the FOB. There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers, and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of platforms 14 and 15, resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 8.48 pm on FOB-3," the minister said. "Consequently, passengers fell on each other," he said. Compensation of Rs 10 lakh was given to the families of each victim, Rs 2.5 lakh to those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh to those with simple injuries. "A total amount of Rs 2.01 crore has been paid to 33 victims and their family members," Mr Vaishnaw said. To manage large crowds better, the railways have put new measures in place. These include permanent holding areas, access control for confirmed ticket holders at 73 stations, wider foot overbridges, CCTV cameras, and war rooms at major stations. The Maha Kumbh Mela, the 45-day event that ended in February, led to record ticket sales, emphasising the importance of solid crowd management during such events.
