MMC to begin membership registration in August, AGM scheduled for November

PUTRAJAYA: Membership registration for the Malaysia Media Council (MMC) will open in early August and close at the end of September, with a nominal fee of RM10, according to the Council's Founding Board Members.
In a statement issued today following the presentation of appointment letters to the members of the Founding Board by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, MMC announced that applications can be submitted via its official website at www.majlismedia.my.
"Membership is open to media owners, professionals, individuals and organisations involved in the media ecosystem, as well as those representing the public's interest," the statement read.
The MMC also announced that its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled to take place on Nov 7 in Kuala Lumpur. At the AGM, new board members will be elected and key matters will be discussed, including the membership fee structure, the industry's code of ethics, complaints mechanism, annual budget and MMC's by-laws.
At its first meeting, the Founding Board appointed Premesh Chandran as Interim Chairperson, pending the election of a full board later this year.
As an independent self-regulatory body for Malaysia's media industry, the MMC is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting ethical and responsible journalism, establishing the industry code of ethics and serving as a bridge between the media, government and the public.
"The MMC will enhance professionalism in the media industry and protect public interest within an increasingly complex media environment," MMC added.
MMC said its structure is designed to ensure broad representation, with the Founding Board consisting of elected representatives from media publishers, media professionals and public interest groups, including academics and members of civil society.
"Additionally, the government may appoint two representatives. Notably, the MMC Act 2025 stipulates that at least 25 per cent of board members must come from Sabah and Sarawak, and leadership of the Council must reflect gender parity — a first in Malaysia," it said.
In the same statement, Founding Board member Phyllis Wong, of the Borneo Post and Utusan Borneo, said she felt honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility, and was encouraged by the shared commitment to uphold media ethics and accountability, despite MMC not yet being fully operational.
"This marks the beginning of a unified voice for responsible journalism in Malaysia," she said.
Fellow board member Ronnie Teo, of the Kuching Division Journalists Association, described the MMC as a long-awaited platform to bring together media professionals across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. — BERNAMA

46 tamu desa to be built, upgraded in Sabah

Ewon KOTA KINABALU (July 16): Forty-six tamu desa (rural markets) across Sabah will be built or undergo upgrading this year. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the projects will be carried out through 28 full and sub-district offices, with a total allocation of RM10 million under the tamu desa premises development programme by the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP). 'This year, we received an allocation of RM10 million under Budget 2025 to implement the development of tamu desa premises. 'During the closing ceremony of the MADANI Rakyat Programme in Tawau on May 11, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM10 million allocation to continue developing tamu desa premises in Sabah,' he said in a statement Wednesday. Ewon said he would head to Sarawak next to discuss the implementation of tamu desa development in the state this year. 'The land status of the tamu desa sites must be verified by the district offices to avoid disputes, and 15 district offices have submitted written confirmation for sites with no issues,' he said, expressing hope that the projects would provide comfortable facilities for entrepreneurs and small traders. Earlier, Ewon handed over letters of appointment to 15 district officers as chairpersons of the district-level Entrepreneur, Cooperative, Hawker and Small Trader Development Council (MPUKPPD), as well as letters of authorisation for the tamu desa development projects in the 15 districts in the state.

Content Forum welcomes establishment of Malaysian Media Council

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) has welcomed the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC). Congratulating the newly appointed founding board members, the Content Forum described the council's formation as a significant milestone in Malaysia's media landscape. It said the MMC's commitment to ethical journalism, media independence, and inclusive representation marks an important step towards strengthening public trust in the media. "As an established industry-led self-regulatory organisation under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Content Forum shares the MMC's aspirations for a content ecosystem built on transparency and accountability. "With over two decades of experience in implementing the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Content Code and facilitating content-related complaints across broadcasting, online, and emerging platforms, the Content Forum understands the power and responsibility that comes with credible self-regulation," it said in a statement today. The Content Forum also commended the ministry for its foresight and leadership in championing a collaborative, industry-driven model of media governance. It urged its members and industry partners to support the MMC's growth by participating in its membership drive. "A vibrant and united media sector can only flourish when all stakeholders contribute to shaping its direction," the Content Forum said. Meanwhile, Content Forum chairman Rafiq Razali said the council's creation represents an important moment for the country's media ecosystem and a chance to raise the bar for credible and independent journalism. He said the council's role would meaningfully complement the Content Forum's by elevating standards, promoting accountability, and safeguarding the public interest. "We are proud to support this new chapter and look forward to working in tandem with the MMC to shape a healthier, more responsible media landscape," he said.
