Indian Express5 days ago
Rebel Ugandan soldiers overthrew the five-year-old government of Milton Obote and seized power in a bloodless coup. Radio Uganda said Brig Bazilio Olara Okello toppled President Obote who is believed to have fled to Kenya. The radio broadcast by Second Lieutenant Walter Lacuru gave no further details.
29 MLAs resign
Five opposition parties in Haryana have decided to launch a movement against the Rajiv Gandhi-Longowal agreement on Punjab. Twenty nine members of the Haryana State Assembly have handed over their resignations to their leaders to be submitted to the Speaker on August 9, the Quit India Day, after a rally in Rohtak.
Gujarat bandh
On an incident-free day, the 'Gujarat bandh' call given by the striking government employees, demanding abolition of the caste-based roster system of promotion, evoked a good response in parts of Saurashtra and Baroda, while it had little effect in South Gujarat. A bomb explosion was reported at a place of worship in the Vassana suburb area of the city. No details were immediately available.
Assam agitation
Assam agitation leaders were not interested in continuing the talks to resolve the foreigners issue at the official level and even threatened fresh agitation if the Centre delayed in arriving at a solution. AASU leaders were reported to have said that there was no need for having another round of talks with the union home secretary, R D Pradhan, which was stated to be held in Shillong. Pradhan had assured the delegation that the Centre was keen in solving the issue and there was no 'uncertainty' over the resumption of the talks. 'We will intimate to him our desire of having talks at the political level', the leaders have said.

Karnataka caste survey

It has been full of twists, real and imagined. Caution had filled the April air as the Siddaramaiah regime dusted off Karnataka's 2015 caste survey report. Tense cabinet meets ensued, amid a feared backlash from the Lingayat-Vokkaliga caste duopoly. Meanwhile, a googly came from the Centre: on April 30, after years of holding out, it relented on including a national caste count in the 2026 census. The Congress claimed credit for forcing the U-turn, but soon made one of its own. Karnataka effectively junked the 2015 report. Instead, between September 22 and October 7, some 165,000 enumerators will fan out with handheld devices for a de novo sorting of the state's 70-odd million.

Mirwaiz showers rare praise on J&K MPs for highlighting ‘Kashmir plight' in Parliament

Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday (August 1, 2025) showered rare praise on Members of Parliament (MPs) from Jammu and Kashmir for highlighting 'peoples' plight' and urged the Centre to start 'engagement at all levels'. Seeking peace 'Neither war, nor violence, nor use of force can solve problems and lead to peace and prosperity, which the billions of people in the Indian subcontinent seek, and the swathes of poor in this region deserve. Engagement at all levels is a far cheaper and evolved alternative,' the Mirwaiz said, while delivering the Friday sermon at Srinagar's historic Jama Masjid. The Mirwaiz named and praised the three MPs from J&K — National Conference's Mian Altaf and Syed Aga Ruhullah along with Awami Ittehad Party's Engineer Rashid. He said the trio 'was the only ones to highlight the deep concerns and plight of the people at the epicentre of the basic problem and the current debate'. Critical in past The Mirwaiz's praise for the mainstream leaders is rare because, in the past, the separatists were always critical of their narratives. Referring to the ongoing proceedings of the Parliament, the Mirwaiz said, 'The three MPs from J&K spoke with passion and pain about the disempowerment and dispossession of the people of J&K. They expressed the sentiments of the people of J&K that we have all along been talking about. It is good to see that on these matters all are on the same page.' He said very few MPs, and mostly in the Opposition, talked of the human aspect of war and its costs therein, and its correlation to J&K, which 'reflects the mindset and mood of the times'. He hoped that the MPs' lament about the Kashmir situation 'will be heard by those in power in New Delhi'. 'If they really want to lessen 'dil ki doori', they must pay heed to it,' he added.

Centre to withdraw order granting release of film Udaipur files, Delhi HC told

The Centre on Friday (August 1, 2025) informed the Delhi High Court that it was withdrawing its decision granting nod to the release of the film Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, and will take a decision on the revision petitions 'afresh'. The court, which was hearing two pleas challenging the Centre's decision allowing the release of the movie, directed the parties to appear before the government on August 4 and make their submissions. The court was informed by the counsel for the film's producer that the movie is scheduled to be released on August 8 and they would take some time for making arrangements for releasing it by engaging the theatres. The court took on record statement by Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the Central government as also the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), that the government will withdraw the earlier decision granting nod to the release of the film and 'take a decision on the revision petitions preferred by the petitioners afresh'. Noting the submissions, the court disposed of the two petitions filed by Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, and Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani. The Centre's counsel had said the film has undergone a two-step filter, first by the censor board, which suggested 55 cuts, and second by the committee, which further asked for six cuts, totalling 61 cuts. Javed's counsel objected to the release of the film on the ground that it would prejudice his case during the trial. Kanhaiya Lal, an Udaipur-based tailor in Rajasthan, was murdered in 2022, allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, for sharing a social media post in support of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma after her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
