Sikh temporal seats reconcile, uphold Akal Takht's primacy; religious rift ends in show of unity
Sikhism
has been resolved after two prominent seats of Sikh authority, the Akal Takht in Amritsar and Takht Sri Harimandir Sahib in Patna, agreed to withdraw their rival edicts and reaffirmed the supremacy of the Akal Takht.
The reconciliation brings to an end months of tensions that saw each Takht declare religious misconduct — known as 'tankhah' — against prominent Sikh leaders, including Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and the respective Jathedars (head priests) of the two takhts.
Addressing the media on Monday, Akal Takht's officiating Jathedar, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, said the issue was resolved in the interest of Panthic (community) unity and the wider Sikh sangat (congregation).
A meeting of five senior Sikh high priests, including granthis from Sri Harimandir Sahib — Giani Rajdeep Singh, Giani Sultan Singh, and Giani Kewal Singh — and the Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Bhai Tek Singh, was held at the Akal Takht secretariat to address the concerns surrounding Takht Patna Sahib. Gargaj claimed to have received a formal request on May 12 from the Patna Sahib Management Committee, seeking a review of earlier decisions and pledging full submission to the Akal Takht's authority.

Following deliberations, the high priests amended previous resolutions passed on May 21 and July 5, which had contributed to the standoff. Simultaneously, the Panj Piaras Singh Sahiban (collective leadership) at Takht Patna Sahib also met on Monday and accepted Akal Takht's supremacy formally, withdrawing their own conflicting declarations. Gargaj confirmed receipt of the formal resolution, describing the development as a reaffirmation of Sikh unity and respect for institutional tradition.

Expeditiously decide appeals in anti-Sikh riots cases: SC tells Allahabad HC
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday told the Allahabad high court to expeditiously decide 'out of turn' the appeals in the 1984 ant-Sikh riots cases, emphasising that the four-decades-old tragedy was investigated only upon the court's intervention and any further delay would result in evidence of vital witnesses being lost. A view of Supreme Court building (Sonu Mehta/HT FILE PHOTO) The court order came on a public interest litigation filed by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee that complained about the slow progress of anti-Sikh riots cases in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and sought the court's intervention to expedite the appeals pending before the high court seeking re-investigation. 'Keeping that in view, and most importantly the fact that with the passage of time, production of vital witnesses has become a difficult task, we request the high court to take up these matters on an out-of-turn basis and expeditiously,' a bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said, The court reviewed the UP government's status report, which indicated that the trial had been stayed in three of the 11 appeals pending in the high court. 'What bothers us is that in the 11 cases where the trials commenced pursuant to the charge sheets filed by the SIT, the high court has stayed the proceedings in three cases,' the bench said. The court stated that it did not wish to comment on the issue, as it might impact the accused's rights, but requested the high court to bear in mind that the investigation into these cases was initiated at the top court's intervention. '..all that we request is that the high court may take up these matters out of turn for their adjudication in accordance with law. We say so for the reason the unfortunate tragedy took place way back in the year 1984 and it is only because of repeated efforts made by this court that the investigations were revived, SIT was constituted and on completion of investigation, the chargesheet has now been filed,' the top court said. The UP government informed the bench that in most cases, the high court has condoned the delay in admitting appeals after a gap of more than 8,000 days. The court directed the state's Advocate General to deploy its best law officers having expertise in criminal law to assist in the hearing of the pending appeals. It further directed its order to be placed before the high court bench for necessary action. The petitioner, represented by advocate Jagjit Singh Chabra, requested the court to monitor further progress of the cases. SImilar monitoring is being done by the top court of appeals pending in the anti-Sikh riots cases pursued before the Delhi high court. The top court's attempts to bring justice to the victims of the 1984 riots had led to the constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) headed by former Delhi high court judge, justice (retd) SN Dhingra who analysed the riot cases that were closed. In a petition by S Gurlad Singh Kahlon, a former DSGMC member, the top court was informed of the shoddy probe conducted by the Delhi police which clubbed multiple murder cases into a single FIR and failed to register separate offences involving sexual assault, murder, etc.

MNF alleges infra funds misuse in Mizoram
Aizawl: Mizo National Front (MNF) on Friday raised serious concerns over the utilisation of funds sanctioned for key infrastructure projects in Mizoram, questioning whether the money was misused or misappropriated by the Mizoram govt. The alleged fund embezzlement was brought to light during a meeting of the DONER Consultative Committee held on Thursday afternoon at the Parliament Annex Committee Room. The meeting was attended by several MPs from the northeastern states and key officials, MNF said in a statement. According to the statement, during the meeting, Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha member, K Vanlalvena, representing MNF, pointed out that funds allocated under the ministry of DONER for the repair of the Keitum-N Mualcheng-Zawlsei road in central Mizoram's Serchhip district, under the 2023-2024 budget, were yet to be utilised. Despite approval for the repair works, the projects did not commence, and Vanlalvena suggested that the allocated money might have been diverted to other purposes by the present state govt. The meeting decided that the matter should be addressed in the next meeting for further investigation. The MP told TOI that around Rs 200 crore was sanctioned by the ministry of DoNER for the repair of the road. In addition, the director of fisheries and animal husbandry from Mizoram raised concerns about the SNA SPARSH Scheme, for which the central govt sanctioned Rs 1,000 lakh in April 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Central officials pointed out that the Mizoram govt had not utilised the funds, and this non-utilisation might affect further sanctions amounting to Rs 700 lakh. 2 Tripura profs suspended for ‘inappropriate conduct'
Agartala: The state govt has suspended two assistant professors from separate degree colleges following allegations of misconduct. The action was taken on Friday against Dr Shantanu Mujumdar, a chemistry professor at Kamalpur Government Degree College, and Dr Abhijit Nath, a physics professor at Ram Thakur College in Agartala. Dr Mujumdar's suspension comes after a video surfaced on social media, allegedly showing him in a compromising situation with a female student inside the college laboratory. Special secretary for education Ravel Hemendra Kumar said Dr Mujumdar admitted to the inappropriate conduct, which violated the institution's sanctity and the teaching profession's dignity. He has been directed to report to the principal of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar College in South Tripura and is prohibited from leaving the station without prior approval. In a separate incident, Dr Nath faces suspension over allegations of tampering with the college's admission process. An inquiry revealed that he forged the admission of students not listed on the merit list by using fee cards with falsified principal signatures. Dr Nath confessed to taking 50 fee cards from the office without authorization, returning only 28, and failing to account for the rest. The college principal reported that Dr Nath facilitated 69 unauthorized admissions using 120 fee cards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Both professors have been suspended with immediate effect and are required to remain at their respective headquarters unless granted permission to leave.
