MARTA launches interactive tool to check progress on capital projects, improvements
With multiple projects underway for repair, redesign and improvement, MARTA launched a new tool to help track the progress of what it says is a 'sweepoing program of capital projects.'
The Project Snapshot Tool gives basics on timelines, budgeting and spending on the various projects in MARTA's Capital Improvement Program, a 10-year plan approved annually by the agency's Board of Directors.
According to MARTA, the projects are searchable online in each of the agency's jurisdictions, which are the City of Atlanta and Clayton, DeKalb and Fulton counties.

'This tool offers a new way for our customers and other stakeholders to follow the progress on our wide-reaching capital program,' MARTA Chief Capital Officer Carrie Rocha said in a statement. 'We hope it helps give insight into the enormous scale of work it takes to keep our system running for another half-century and beyond.'
The projects can also be searched in the following categories:
Expansion: Includes planning, design and construction of projects to expand service, such as MARTA Rapid lines and the Bankhead platform extension.
State of Good Repair – Projects: Includes projects or programs to address specific long-term maintenance needs, such as station rehabilitation.
State of Good Repair – Recurring: Includes annual maintenance expenses, such as elevator and escalator repair, railcar and bus maintenance, and vehicle replacement.
Policy, Innovation, Administration: Includes a variety of studies, administrative costs, software, and other items needed to administer the capital program.

U.S. Department of Labor pauses operations at Job Corps centers
The U.S. Department of Labor announced it will begin a phased pause in operations at Job Corps centers nationwide, including Georgia. Wisemon learned of the sudden closures just a few days ago. 'How can y'all promise something and then take it away?' asked Wisemon. Job Corps is a residential career training and education program. Wisemon heads the student government association at a Job Corps center. He said he believes the pause will impact thousands of at-risk students. 'We're looking at youth that are caring and hoping for a second chance at life,' Wisemon explained. The gap between funding and expenses has been publicly known, with operating costs steadily rising and the program's budget remaining flat over several fiscal years.' On Monday, Washington spoke with former Job Corps contractor Kip Carr. 'It directly affects the working-class people,' said Carr. 'It was helping a lot of people get a job. You were doing work-based learning,' Wisemon added. Signs posted on the fence around the lot stated that the land would be the future site of a new Job Corps center. Carr said that the plan now seems unlikely. 'There are students who are days away from getting the GEDs. I hope there are other organizations that they can transition to,' Carr said. The U.S Department of Labor also cited the Job Corps' effectiveness and safety as reasons for the pause. There are more than 100 federally funded Job Corps centers in the United States.

Neighbors speak out to keep gas station out of Atlanta community
Residents who don't want a new gas station built in their community took their concerns to Atlanta City Hall. T They warned the councilwoman for the area, she needs to show she's on their side or else they will remember when they head to the polls in November. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Amber Burks represented a group of residents who oppose a gas station being built in their community on Greenbriar Parkway near the Greenbriar Mall. She spoke at Atlanta's City Council meeting. 'Stop the gas station from being built,' Burks told the body. Burks also focused her message on Councilwoman Marci Overstreet, who represents the area where the proposed gas station is being built. 'I hope you show us that you deserve our continued support,' Burks said. The neighbors issued a warning to Overstreet about the project, saying she needed to show she's on their side in this fight. 'On November 4, as we make our way to the polls, your constituents will remember either your passivity or your active effort as a leader,' Burks said. Overstreet quickly set the record straight. 'I never said that I don't agree with the community. I actually said I was standing with the community.' Members of the community said it was blindsided when they saw the gas station being built near their homes, near a senior apartment complex and near a daycare. They say they have too many gas stations already. She told Channel 2's Tom Jones recently that city planning disagreed with that assessment. Overstreet says she shared that information with the community. 'So I have been standing with the community,' Overstreet said. Residents still plan to hold Overstreet accountable. 'I encourage you, councilwoman, not to turn your back on southwest Atlanta,' said Burks. Overstreet has said in the past that she is frustrated with the project and doesn't agree with it. Man who claims to be event promoter accused of stealing $13,000 from metro Atlanta musicians
A Cobb County man is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from musicians that he failed to pay for six holiday shows in 2024. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Royce Watson Productions promoted the Vintage Vibes as a supper club serenade with tunes from a well-known singer and musicians. A $120 ticket gave customers a gourmet dinner or brunch while being serenaded by timeless hits. The Cherokee Chophouse says it agreed to the deal with a certain percentage from ticket sales. Some of the bands' musicians told Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell Watson agreed to pay each of them different amounts totaling $13,000 immediately following the last show. 'Royce was a great customer. He would come maybe once or twice a week. He just told us he had a great idea, a great band. He organizes nice events, he told me he is good buddies with Hayden Rider, who is a backstreet singer he starred in big events on Broadway. We took it as a great business opportunity. We saw nothing wrong with it. We are closed on Mondays, so we took the opportunity to open on Mondays just for the show,' said George Tselios, General Manager of the Cherokee Chophouse. 'Royce found me online through a booking website,' said pianist John Burke. 'He was friendly, and he also seemed like he already had a relationship with The Chophouse. He said that his great friend, the owner Gus, was putting together the show, and he was going to pack the show. As a musician, that's really all you need to hear,' said musician Hollie Pritchard. The band spent hours practicing before the show. 'We did six shows over the course of late November through December,' said Pritchard. However, after the last show, Pritchard said the band never received the money they were owed. A text message Watson allegedly sent the band states that he was sick. In the message, Watson apologizes for the delayed payment and blames it on a delay from the credit card company. Pritchard said Watson eventually stopped communication with the band altogether, before police were contacted. 'He made about $80,000 from what the report said,' Tselios said. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'This has been pretty upsetting for all of us. Super devastating both personally and financially,' Pritchard said. 'We would feed the customers for free just cause they paid but we wouldn't let him in unless we got paid. We got jipped on a few things the VIP meet and greet wasn't our plan,' Tselios said. Tselios said Watson paid the restaurant what was owed because they refused to let him enter without receiving the amount Watson agreed to pay. Pritchard and some of the other musicians said they did all they could to get the money they were owed, but they said Watson went ghost. Police eventually got involved, and now Watson is facing numerous criminal charges that include felonies. Some of the musicians told Newell they will be sure to sign contracts with promoters they don't know, moving forward. The Cherokee Chophouse is stepping up in a big way, forming some sort of silver lining to what's been a nightmare for the musicians. 'We want to make it up to them; they are great people, great musicians,' Tselios said. Some of the musicians are now hired for three months of shows beginning June 22 at the Cherokee Chophouse. Newell tried to contact Watson, but hasn't heard back. The website for his production company and the phone number he used for ticket sales are inactive.
