KUALA TERENGGANU – What was meant to be a meaningful visit to honour the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, a university student who tragically died in a bus crash in Gerik last month, ended in heartbreak when a newlywed man lost his life in a road accident on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at Kilometre 79 of the Kuala Terengganu–Kota Bharu Road in Setiu. More than 2,000 people attended the funeral prayer and burial of the late Wan Hasbullah at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Sheikh Ibrahim, Jalan Pusara, Kuala Terengganu.
The victim, Wan Hasbullah Wan Abdul Halim, 42, had been on his way to Besut to meet a group of motorcyclists from Kedah.
Together, they had planned to organise a condolence visit to the family of Nurly Sahirah, a student from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI).
'My brother had agreed to meet the group in Besut. The main purpose was to discuss plans for visiting the late Nurly's family.
'None of us expected he would be the one to go first,' said his younger brother, Wan Zainul Abidin Wan Abdul Halim, 33.
Speaking at the Sheikh Ibrahim Muslim Cemetery on Wednesday night, Wan Zainul revealed that the late Wan Hasbullah had only recently married on Awal Muharram and had planned to hold a thanksgiving reception in September.
'He had talked about having a proper wedding celebration, something simple with both families coming together.
"Now, all of that is just a memory,' he added.
The deceased leaves behind his wife, Wan Nazirah Wan Pauzi, 37, and three sons from a previous marriage, aged between 9 and 13.
His sons are currently attending Sultan Sulaiman Secondary School (SMK Sultan Sulaiman) and Sultan Sulaiman 1 Primary School (SKSS1).
Wan Hasbullah was well known in his community. He served as the Jalan Tekukur Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairman and was a hafiz, having memorised all 30 chapters of the Quran.
He was active in charity work, including helping to repair religious schools in Thailand and participating in circumcision and animal sacrifice programmes.
His funeral prayer was held at Masjid Khalifah on Wednesday night and was attended by over 2,000 mourners. He was laid to rest at around 10pm.
It was reported that the victim died after the high-powered Kawasaki Z1000 motorcycle he was riding collided with a car making a right turn at approximately 10.40am on Wednesday.

Top STPM 2024 student credits academic success to Quran memorisation

ANYONE who excels in their studies must have their own unique strategies for success, and that's precisely what sets them apart. For Muhammad Irham Mazlan, 18, one of the eight top scorers in the 2024 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), his approach is deeply rooted in discipline, faith and consistency. The Kelantan-born student, who scored 5As and a perfect cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.00, attributes much of his academic success to his long-standing commitment to Quran memorisation. Image for illustrative purposes only. He began memorising the Quran in Form 1 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tok Bachok under the Tahfiz Model Ulul Albab programme, mastering 26 juzuk. Even after transferring to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tengku Panglima Raja in Pasir Mas in Form 6, he remained istiqamah (consistent) in his efforts to continue his memorisation. According to Irham, the process of Quran memorisation not only instilled discipline but also sharpened his focus and memory, directly benefiting his academic performance. "If you can repeat a page of the Quran 40 times, revising academic subjects becomes much easier. Hafazan (memorisation of the Quran) trains the brain to focus and retain information," he told Sinar. Inspired by the same techniques used in his tahfiz journey, Irham adopted a structured study method for his academic revision, repeating notes, doing practice questions consistently and forming effective study habits. Irham, who is also Pre-University Student Representative Council president also credits his success to a small, committed study group he formed with his peers. He said although he was a day scholar and did not stay in the hostel, he and his friends received permission from the school principal to study late into the night, up to 11pm for boys and 7pm for girls, making full use of spaces like the surau, seminar hall and academic blocks. "We also implemented a mentor-mentee system and continuously drilled ourselves with past questions," Irham added. The Islamic values deeply embedded in the school's culture further supported his academic journey. Despite not being a religious school, the daily routine was rich in spiritual practices. Mornings began with Quran recitation, sunnah prayers and short tazkirah (sermon), while the afternoons included reciting Surah al-Waqiah, a routine he believes helped calm the soul and strengthen the spirit. Remarkably, he had already completed three full recitations of the Quran under the guidance of an ustazah (religious teacher) by the time he entered secondary school. To Irham, the Quran is more than a source of spiritual peace, it is a guide that provides structure, discipline and inner motivation to persevere. Looking ahead, he aspires to further his studies in law and syariah at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), hoping to continue his journey of balancing academic excellence with spiritual growth. To students out there striving for excellence, Irham's story is a powerful reminder that success doesn't come by chance, it's built on discipline, consistency and a clear sense of purpose. His approach, rooted in faith and smart study habits, shows that with the right mindset and effort, achieving top results is possible. Perhaps by adopting some of his tips, whether it's revising consistently, forming focused study groups, or staying grounded through daily spiritual practices, you too could be like Irham, achieving flying colours in your exams and making your own mark.

‘Amid tragedy came relief': UPSI student hurt in fatal crash secures long-awaited MARA loan

JERTIH, July 3 — A Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student who survived last month's fatal bus crash in Gerik has finally received a long-awaited education loan from Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), ending a two-year wait. Nur Ain Najwa Mohd Ilias, 23, said she was overwhelmed with gratitude when MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki personally handed over the offer letter duting a visit to her family home in Kampung Gong Kemuntong recently. 'I applied for the loan twice since enrolling at UPSI, but both attempts failed due to technical errors in the form submission,' she told Bernama during a visit yesterday by the Girl Guides Malaysia (Terengganu branch), led by its president Tengku Puteri Daulath Raja Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra Sultan Mizan. 'Amid this tragedy, there was unexpected relief. Not only was I offered the loan I had long hoped for, but my younger twin brothers, who had postponed their own university education so I could pursue mine first, were also promised MARA assistance if accepted into higher learning institutions,' she said. The second of six siblings, Nur Ain Najwa said the loan, which takes effect in October, includes a RM800 monthly living allowance to ease her family's financial burden, as she had relied on her brothers' and part-time work, while receiving aid from the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) to pay tuition. 'I didn't apply for a National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan because I had already received one during my diploma studies at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA),' said the Arabic Language and Education student. Her twin brothers, Muhammad Hassan and Muhammad Hussin, 22, now plan to further their studies, with the former applying to Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) and the latter awaiting results from Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), expected this Friday. Nur Ain Najwa, who sustained a fractured left shoulder and a sprained right wrist in the crash, had earlier gone viral after sharing her family's struggles with Asyraf Wajdi during his visit to Gerik Hospital. The June 9 incident involved a chartered bus carrying 45 UPSI students from Jertih back to the main campus in Tanjung Malim and a Perodua Alza, resulting in 15 deaths and 33 others injured, including the drivers and passengers of both vehicles. — Bernama
