‘Not nice' to hear Alexander-Arnold booed by Liverpool fans, says Robertson

LIVERPOOL : Trent Alexander-Arnold was booed by Liverpool fans during today's 2-2 draw against Arsenal as Andrew Robertson admitted it was 'not nice' to hear the jeers for his teammate in his first appearance since announcing he will leave the champions at the end of this season.
Liverpool rightback Alexander-Arnold confirmed his impending exit on Monday ahead of a widely-expected move to Real Madrid.
In his first game in front of Liverpool's fans at Anfield since his controversial decision to quit his boyhood club, the Merseyside-born England star was subjected to audible jeers as he was introduced as a 67th-minute substitute against Arsenal.
There were some cheers for the 26-year-old product of Liverpool's youth academy, who has won two Premier League titles and the Champions League with the Reds.
But he was booed several times while in possession in the second half as Arsenal fought back from two goals down despite finishing with 10 men after Mikel Merino's late dismissal.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot had said prior to the game he would not tell supporters how they should react to the player's announcement.
Slot dropped Alexander-Arnold from his line-up as he looked to the future by starting with 21-year-old Conor Bradley.
The highly-rated Northern Irishman is viewed as the natural successor to Alexander-Arnold and the crowd sang his name during the game.
'There's a lot of emotion around it,' Robertson said of the taunts for Alexander-Arnold.
'For Trent, it's not been an easy one. Of course it's not. But he's made the decision.
'It's not nice to see a friend get booed, it wasn't nice. But as I said, we can't tell people how to act.
'I can't tell you how I feel about it, I'm extremely proud of him. I love him as a player, I love him as a friend. He will be missed as one of my best friends in the game.'
Slot opted to toe a delicate line between supporting Alexander-Arnold and not angering Liverpool's fans.
'There were people who were not so happy, there were people who were happy for him. They clapped for him. A few of them booed,' he said.
'The good thing about living in Europe is everyone can have their opinion. Towards the end, a few of them got more and more positive.
I will always back my players, the ones I lead and wear the red shirt.
'It would not be fair to focus only on the Liverpool fans that booed. If they want to, it's fine but there were a lot of people that were really positive about him as well.'
Alexander-Arnold is the latest Liverpool star to leave for Real after Steve McManaman and Michael Owen in 1999 and 2004 respectively.
Neither have been able to completely heal the wounds caused by their defections to the Bernabeu.
But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher echoed Robertson's frustration with the reaction of Reds fans to Alexander-Arnold.
'That's the story of the game. That's what we will be talking about after the game, and the back pages of every newspaper tomorrow,' he said.
'I'm surprised how many. When you're in a crowd of 60,000, there's no doubt there's a lot of unhappy people at Liverpool about the situation, and I've said that's understandable.
'But for me, I don't believe that any player putting that red shirt on, going out to play for the club and trying to win them points or win them trophies should be booed.
'I understand, there's a lot of ill-feeling, and some people outside of Liverpool won't be able to understand that. I do.
'But booing one of your own players while they are playing is not for me.'

Wise Jonassen taking time to name singles coach

PETALING JAYA: It has been three months but the search for a new women's singles badminton coach continues. But coaching director Kenneth Jonassen from Denmark is not fretting. Instead of rushing into it, Jonassen is looking for a versatile and experienced candidate to fill the position left vacant by Jeffer Rosobin of Indonesia, who resigned at the end of February. 'I see many potential coaches. Anybody with experience having coached here or abroad is very much appreciated,' said Jonassen. 'It's very much about working as one team all the way from senior to junior. 'I like to move the coaches around in different positions. That gives us an overall feel of unity and a stronger line-up.' Former men's singles shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, who is currently coaching in Ireland is one of the options for Jonassen. Then, there is also former All-England champion Mohd Hafiz Hashim, who is no longer coaching a club in India. 'Iskandar is an experienced coach but I can't confirm anything for now. He's somebody that for sure will be good for our line-up,' said Jonassen. 'It's the middle of the year though, meaning that other coaches are still under contract. Jonassen also believes that stability is important after the constant chopping and changing of coaches in the women's singles department over the past few years. The likes of James Chua, K. Yogendran and Jeffer have all not stayed long in the position since 2022. Of the three, only Yogendran is still in BAM and was moved to the men's singles department last October. 'I think stability is crucial. It gives the long term objective of development and you can follow a certain plan,' said Jonassen. Jonassen is determined to improve the fortunes of the women's singles with Malaysia currently struggling to produce top players in the department. World No. 49 K. Letshanaa is currently BAM's highest ranked player followed by world No. 92 Wong Ling Ching. World No. 47 independent player Goh Jin Wei is the national No. 1.

Soccer-European game generated 38 billion euros in 2023-24 season, study shows

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - Liverpool v Crystal Palace - Anfield, Liverpool, Britain - May 25, 2025 Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch is shown a red card by referee Darren England REUTERS/Phil Noble/File Photo (Reuters) -Europe's soccer market grew by 8% in terms of revenue in the 2023-24 season to 38 billion euros ($43.46 billion) with England's Premier League generating the most, Deloitte said in a study published on Wednesday. In its Annual Review of Football Finance, Deloitte said the top five leagues -- Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1 -- generated 20.4 billion euros in revenue, an increase of 4%. Premier League clubs had the highest revenue of Europe's top leagues at 6.3 billion pounds ($8.50 billion). However, the traditional 'big six' clubs in England's top flight reported lower average revenue growth (3%) than other clubs that were in the Premier League in both the 2023-24 and 2022-23 seasons (11%). The study said the growth was largely driven by expansion of clubs' commercial offerings, which also led to the teams cumulatively generating more than two billion pounds in commercial revenue for the first time. "A focus on stadia development and diversification of commercial revenues led to growth across the European football market in the 2023-24 season," Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte's Sports Business Group, said. "However, clubs and leagues cannot afford to take their eye off the ball as new challenges, including an evolving regulatory landscape and changing fan behaviours, arise. "The pressure is mounting for more clubs to drive additional revenue at the same time as managing rising costs. "More so than ever, leaders and owners must recognise the great responsibility they have of managing these businesses, capturing the historic essence of a football club while honouring its unrivalled role as a community asset for generations to come." Clubs in Europe's 'big five' leagues reported an aggregate operating profit (0.6 billion euros) for a second successive season, while the aggregate wages/revenue ratio fell from 66% to 64%. WSL REVENUE SOARS Clubs in England's Women's Super League (WSL) jointly generated revenue of 65 million pounds in the 2023-24 season, a 34% rise. Each WSL club had a double-digit increase in revenue, while all 12 clubs reported over one million pounds in revenue for the first time, with an average revenue of 5.4 million pounds. "Through developing more robust fan engagement strategies, strong commercial deals and securing central distributions, WSL clubs unlocked a new phase of growth," Deloitte Sports Business group's knowledge and insights lead Jennifer Haskel said. "Plus, as the reporting and attribution of commercial revenue remains inconsistent between clubs, we may be scratching the surface on the value now being generated by the women's game." Soccer-England boss Tuchel interested in contract extension after 2026 World Cup

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - International Friendly - England v Senegal - The City Ground, Nottingham, Britain - June 10, 2025 England manager Thomas Tuchel before the match REUTERS/Paul Childs/File Photo NOTTINGHAM, England (Reuters) -Thomas Tuchel suggested he is tempted to seek a contract extension as England manager beyond the 2026 World Cup up to the 2028 European Championship, despite his team drawing criticism for recent poor performances. Tuchel, whose contract runs through the end of the World Cup, suffered his first defeat in four games as manager in a 3-1 loss to Senegal in a friendly on Tuesday, in which the Senegalese became the first African nation to beat England. "I will always be tempted to stay because I love the group and the opportunity, it's an honour to be England coach," Tuchel said in an interview with radio station Talksport on Wednesday. "I can tell you that even after the disappointment yesterday. "If you ask me today, yes. I am enjoying it, I feel the support, trust and respect of people in the FA. I wanted a new challenge and environment." The 51-year-old conceded to little enjoyment, however, in the hours after Tuesday's game at the City Ground where Senegal repeatedly punished England's lacklustre defence. "I'm not very good, I didn't sleep well after last night. I'm disappointed, it was a short night, we hate to lose," Tuchel said. "The way we lost, losing at home, didn't make me sleep well." The German said England lacked joy and energy, which was also evident in their 1-0 win over Andorra in World Cup qualifying on Saturday. "I am trying now and still we feel we are lacking the enthusiasm and joy consistently at international level," he said. "I think it's massively about connections that the team generates, that we have joy in playing together. "Senegal arrived with the objective to win and to make history. Would we have had the same joy as them if we won? I don't think so. "Celebrate the goals more, be more happy, create an environment where the players feel they can express their joy more lively. Or is it just not in us? Is it a way of lifestyle connected to different cultures?" Tuchel will travel to the United States next week to begin preparations for next summer's World Cup in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, looking at factors such as heat adaptation.
