Motorist involved in Daly City I-280 crash killed by hit-and-run driver after getting out of vehicle

CBS News5 days ago
The California Highway Patrol was seeking the public's help after a Vallejo man was struck and killed after getting out of his vehicle following a multi-car crash on Interstate Highway 280 in Daly City on Wednesday.
The initial crash involving four vehicles happened on southbound 280 at about 11:51 p.m. just south of the 19th Avenue onramp, the CHP said on a social media post Thursday. The chain-reaction crash resulted in minor injuries, and the vehicles ended up blocking the #2 lane with three vehicles stopped directly behind the lead vehicle.
The driver of the last vehicle in line, a blue Honda Civic, exited his vehicle and was standing alongside the left side of one of the other involved vehicles to exchange information when a dark-colored coupe or sedan struck him as well as the open door of one of the vehicles, the CHP said. The dark-colored car continued on without stopping.
Medics arrived and took the 25-year-old driver to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.
The CHP said during the investigation, it was determined that the driver of one vehicles involved in the first crash had been driving under the influence of alcohol. Her white Ford Edge SUV had been damaged in a recent collision, and it appeared she had been driving possibly at a slower speed with major damage to the right front wheel, tire, and axle before being involved in the chain reaction crash, the CHP said. The woman was arrested at the scene for DUI.
The CHP said it was seeking any information that could help investigators identify the dark-colored vehicle, which would have fresh collision damage on the passenger side. The vehicle was also described as having a loud exhaust system. Anyone with information can contact Officer J. Restrepo at the CHP San Francisco Area office during normal business hours at (415) 276-5300, or the CHP Golden Gate Communications Center dispatch, and refer to log #250723GG1670.

12 California department of transport employees held rowdy retirement with stripper and booze during work hours, report

Multiple members of the California Department of Transportation face the sack following a boozy retirement party that allegedly involved a hired stripper whom employees threw money at. The party, first reported by KSBW, resulted in 10 Caltrans workers being served termination notices and another two being given suspension notices. The alleged incident was held at the department's Monterey facility and, according to an email sent to the station by an anonymous employee, 'involved open consumption of alcohol, the presence of a hired stripper.' The participating employees were 'on the clock and being paid with taxpayer dollars,' the email added, per KSBW, adding: 'The event was interrupted by another supervisor who arrived unexpectedly and witnessed the situation firsthand." "Everyone returned to work as if nothing had happened." According to the source, the employees had been throwing money at the stripper. The tip continued: 'Some supervisors were seen consuming alcohol and then driving away from the yard in official state-issued Caltrans vehicles while under the influence... a blatant violation of Caltrans policy, but also a criminal offense and serious liability.' The Independent has reached out to Caltrans for comment about the alleged incident and the employee's claims. In a statement to KSBW, a Caltrans spokesman confirmed that a party had taken place on July 10 and that the department was investigating the allegations. "Caltrans takes these allegations with the utmost seriousness and is unwavering in holding those involved accountable,' the spokesperson said. The Caltrans spokesman said 12 employees have been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of their cases. "The behavior described has absolutely no place in our department and stands in direct opposition to our values and ethical standards. We quickly launched an investigation and have taken immediate disciplinary action,' Caltrans said in a statement, per KSWB.

Ex-NBA star Arenas arrested on charges of hosting illegal poker games

Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas was arrested Wednesday along with five others on charges of running illegal "high-stakes" poker games at his mansion in the Los Angeles suburbs, US prosecutors said. The 43-year-old Arenas, who starred for the Washington Wizards, rented out the luxury home that he owned in Encino "for the purposes of hosting high-stakes illegal poker games" between September 2021 and July 2022, according to an indictment unsealed in Los Angeles. The indictment also alleges the gatherings included young women who received tips to "serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship" to players. Arenas is charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. Those arrested Wednesday also included 49-year-old Yevgeni Gershman, described as a suspected organized crime figure from Israel, among others. According to the indictment, an associate of Arenas, Arthur Kats, staged the house for the poker games, recruited co-conspirators and collected rent on Arenas's behalf. Gershman and the other defendants ran illegal "Pot Limit Omaha" poker games in which players were charged a "rake," either a cut of each pot or a fee per hand. The women servers were allegedly required to pay some of their tips to the organizers, who also provided chefs, valets and armed guards. The indictment includes alleged texts between Arenas and Kats in which the games were set up. Authorities say that in November 2021 Arenas texted Kats a picture of a poker table with "ARENAS POKER CLUB" printed on it along with an image of a basketball player with an "Arenas" jersey. If convicted, the defendants face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count. Gershman is also charged with conspiring with 35-year-old Valentina Cojocari to enter into a "sham marriage" aimed at obtaining legal permanent residence status in the United States. Arenas, a three-time NBA All-Star, last played in the NBA in 2012 and played for the Shanghai Sharks in China in 2012-13. In December 2009 he was involved in an infamous incident with Washington teammate Javaris Crittenton in which both brought guns into the locker room, Arenas saying their dispute stemmed from a card game. Arenas pleaded guilty to felony gun possession and was suspended for the final 50 games of the 2009-2010 NBA season. bb/st
