Amherst Cinema announces 2025 'Science on Screen' season

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Amherst Cinema has unveiled its 2025 Science on Screen season, a thought-provoking film series that pairs classic and contemporary films with discussions led by western Massachusetts scholars and experts.
The season kicks off on Tuesday, March 25, as part of the National Evening of Science on Screen, a nationwide event highlighting the intersection of film and science. Amherst Cinema's three-part series features films that serve as launching points for discussion on forensic psychology, misinformation, and reproductive technology ethics.
'Science on Screen brings our community together to explore timely and relevant scientific themes through film,' said Amherst Cinema. 'This season, we're especially excited to showcase films that spark conversations about crime, media, and emerging technologies.'

The Silence of the Lambs (1991) – Tuesday, March 25, 7:00 p.m. (Speaker: Erik Cheries, Senior Lecturer in Psychological & Brain Sciences, UMass Amherst) Topic: Seeing is (Not) Believing: Navigating mis/disinformation in an era of fake news and digital discourse
Don't Look Up (2021) – Tuesday, April 1, 7:00 p.m. (Speaker: Ethan Zuckerman, Associate Professor of Public Policy, Information, and Communication, UMass Amherst) Topic: Seeing is (Not) Believing: Navigating mis/disinformation in an era of fake news and digital discourse
The Pod Generation (2023) – Tuesday, April 15, 7:00 p.m. (Speaker: Carrie N. Baker, Professor and Chair, Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Smith College) Topic: Pushing the Limits: Ethics, Opportunities, and Perils of Reproductive Technologies
The Science on Screen initiative, launched in 2005 by Coolidge Corner Theatre and funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, aims to engage audiences with scientific ideas through film. Amherst Cinema has been a grantee since 2011, curating 48 programs to date.
This year's lineup was developed with input from Leah Demers and Ethan Thompson, two Amherst Cinema team members with backgrounds in film studies at UMass Amherst. Their expertise helped shape the film selections and identify key discussion topics.
Tickets for the series are available on their website and at the box office.

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame Committee announced the induction of its Class of 2025. 22News' Rich Tettemer reflects on a highlight career Our very own Anchor, Rich Tettemer, was honored Thursday night, as he gets ready to retire. On the eve of Rich Tettemer's retirement, the longtime anchor got to take part in the Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame, not only as MC, but as an inductee of the 2025 class. Long-time 22News Morning Anchor Rich Tettemer began his career in sports broadcasting. His passion for baseball led to many years of covering Super Bowls, Olympics, and World Series–including the 2004 historic win. Rich was awarded the Gary Brown Excellence Award at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke. The Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame gave recognition to his contribution to local sports since joining 22News in 1988. 'To even be named in the same sentence as Garry brown is quite an honor,' says Tettemer. The other Class of 2025 inductees included Pete Fatse. He currently serves as the hitting coach for the Boston Red Sox and is a western Massachusetts native. Fatse says, 'As long as you continue to find joy in the game, you're going to be in a good place.' Love for baseball draws those who have given so much to the sport. Rich Tettemer is retiring Friday, June 6, reflecting on his switch from sports to morning anchor in 2006. 'Look, I wouldn't trade that for the world,' Rich adds. 'Because it was a great run to see all three of my kids, and be with my wife, and go to all those games and not miss a pitch, not miss a goal.' Rich shared some advice to young adults when picking their careers. He said to pick something that you like to do—Something that you get excited to go to work every day. Springfield Pride Parade Committee expands Pride festivities to support the youth

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Springfield kicked off Pride Month with a flag raising to lead up to a weekend full of events. Where to celebrate Pride Month in western Massachusetts June 5th through the 7th marks the 4th annual Springfield Pride Parade Weekend. This year, the Springfield LGBTQIA + community is using their voice to support the youth. Thursday's kick-off event included a Progressive Pride flag raised at City Hall, a proclamation read by Mayor Domenic Sarno, and remarks by city officials. The Pride Parade Committee told 22News that this weekend will be used to raise money for their safe space programs in Springfield public schools. The safe space programs give kids a safe, supportive, and inclusive space to grow, learn, and thrive in school and life. Right now, they're wrapping up their 3rd year working in 6 schools. In the next year, they're hoping to be in at least 10 more. 'It shows us coming together as a community, and it really shows our commitment to inclusion and supporting our LGBTQ+ youth,' said Taurean Bethea, Springfield Pride Parade Committee CEO. 'Blippi: Join the Band Tour' will bring its music-packed, interactive live show to Symphony Hall on Friday, December 5, as part of its continued journey across North America.
