MFL vows VAR enhancements for 2025-26 season after controversial debut
While Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) referees' committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram described the inaugural season of VAR as 'excellent' — pointing to an average of 0.57 on-field reviews per match and a review duration of just 2.27 minutes — several high-profile incidents led to public criticism and disciplinary action.

One of the most talked-about moments came during a Super League clash between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), which resulted in referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official being suspended for two matches and ordered to undergo retraining.
In response, MFL acting chief executive officer Shazli Shaik said the league is taking proactive steps to improve the system moving forward, New Straits Times reported.
'To date, we've conducted two VAR briefing and improvement sessions. FIFA and AFC representatives also took part in these sessions,' he was quoted as saying.
'Last season was our first using VAR, and we've noted the shortcomings. We're working to implement those corrections for the upcoming season.'
Shazli also confirmed that the full fixture list for the 2025-26 M-League campaign will be announced on Friday.
On the regional front, Malaysia will have Johor Darul Ta'zim and Selangor representing the country in the Asean Club Championship. JDT, the reigning Super League champions, are also set to compete in the Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite, while Selangor will feature in the ACL2 tier.
Meanwhile, newly promoted Super League side Immigration FC has been given until Saturday to confirm their home venue ahead of their debut in the top flight.

PETALING JAYA: Young Spanish winger Alberto Martin Diaz could be the perfect replacement for Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) outgoing seasoned campaigner Juan Martin. The 23-year-old, who goes by the more familiar name of Teto Martin, will be joining the Southern Tigers for the upcoming Super League season. The youngster will give JDT head coach Xisco Munoz more tactical options, especially on the flanks with the departure of Martin. Martin, 33, said goodbye to JDT after his contract ended, bidding farewell to a club he had called home for the past three years and won multiple trophies with. Soon to be wearing the No. 20 jersey, Teto primarily plays on the right wing, but his versatility will allow him to play on the left or even in other attacking positions. Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Teto spent his footballing career with CD Tenerife. He made his debut for the team's reserve squad four years ago, scoring in their win over Atletico Union Guimar in the Spanish Tercera Division (third division) after coming on as a substitute. Teto played for the first time at the end of 2021 during a Spanish King's Cup match against CD Ibiza Islas Pitiusas, coming on as a substitute in extra time to help Tenerife win 2-1. The 54-year-old has walked into a club attempting a rapid turnaround in the aftermath of a disappointing 13-month spell under predecessor Kim Pan-gon that has seen Ulsan surrender their status as the kings of Korean football. But the former midfielder is confident he can revitalise a club that has won the last three consecutive K-League titles. "Ulsan HD have been a powerhouse in the K-League for a long time," Shin said. "I will try to rebuild the dynasty here with everything I can." Ulsan's form has plummeted since Hong Myung-bo, who led his team to the league title in 2022 and 2023, left in July last year to take charge of the South Korea national team. His successor Kim managed to retain the K-League title only to oversee an embarrassingly early exit from the Asian Champions League Elite, a poor performance by a side that had reached the semi-finals in April 2024. The team's disappointing form carried into the new K-League season and, by the time of Kim's departure on Sunday, Ulsan were 23 points adrift of leaders Jeonbuk Motors with their title defence in tatters. It is that gulf which Shin will be expected to bridge as he returns to club football in South Korea for the first time in 13 years. During his previous spell in the K-League, Shin led Seongnam Ilhwa to the Asian Champions League title in 2010 and the Korean FA Cup a year later. He moved on from Seongnam to work with the national team, first as Uli Stielike's assistant before taking on the full-time role in 2017, when he won the East Asian Championship. In 2018 he led his country to the World Cup finals, where the Koreans handed champions Germany a 2-0 defeat that eliminated Joachim Loew's side from the competition. Shin took his services to Indonesia in 2020 and, in a four-year spell, led the Southeast Asian nation to the knockout rounds of the Asian Cup for the first time as well as to the third phase of the continent's 2026 World Cup preliminaries. And while he was cast aside by the Indonesians in January to make way for Patrick Kluivert, Shin retains the faith of enough decision makers within the South Korean game to be given the opportunity to revitalise Ulsan.
