By One Martin for the other - JDT's new winger Teto could fill in nicely for Juan

The Star20 hours ago
PETALING JAYA: Young Spanish winger Alberto Martin Diaz could be the perfect replacement for Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) outgoing seasoned campaigner Juan Martin.
The 23-year-old, who goes by the more familiar name of Teto Martin, will be joining the Southern Tigers for the upcoming Super League season.
The youngster will give JDT head coach Xisco Munoz more tactical options, especially on the flanks with the departure of Martin.
Martin, 33, said goodbye to JDT after his contract ended, bidding farewell to a club he had called home for the past three years and won multiple trophies with.
Soon to be wearing the No. 20 jersey, Teto primarily plays on the right wing, but his versatility will allow him to play on the left or even in other attacking positions.
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Teto spent his footballing career with CD Tenerife.
He made his debut for the team's reserve squad four years ago, scoring in their win over Atletico Union Guimar in the Spanish Tercera Division (third division) after coming on as a substitute.
Teto played for the first time at the end of 2021 during a Spanish King's Cup match against CD Ibiza Islas Pitiusas, coming on as a substitute in extra time to help Tenerife win 2-1.
At 20, he made his professional debut in the Spanish Segunda Division (second division) in 2022, scoring his first goal against Malaga in their 3-1 win.
Following Tenerife's relegation last season, Teto made the move to Johor to join JDT as they chase their 12th league title.

JDT ready for Selangor clash

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are ready to kick off the 2025/2026 Malaysia League (M-League) season in style as they set out to defend their Charity Shield title against Selangor FC at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, here tomorrow night. Head coach Xisco Munoz, who will make his debut with the Southern Tigers tomorrow, believes his team are mentally and tactically prepared to rise to the occasion after a good pre-season in Spain. The 44-year-old Spaniard said JDT owner Tunku Mahkota Ismail played a key role in smoothing the team's preparations ahead of their title defence. 'The most important also is we need to understand it's our first game at home, we need to connect with the fans, we need to connect with our style and we need to give our best. 'I think we are in a good way. We made very good pre-season (preparations) and we need to continue to improve a lot of things but we are in a good way,' Munoz told the pre match press conference here, today. JDT enjoyed a promising pre-season in Spain, which included credible draws against Spanish side Levante UD and English League One outfit Cardiff City. Meanwhile, JDT captain Natxo Insa also admitted that a quality pre-season has helped strengthen the 11-time consecutive Super League champions and put them on the right track to defend their title. 'I think we had a really good pre-season in Spain. We faced some strong teams and tomorrow we're aiming to give our best because we know how important it is to start the season with the right momentum. We need to carry forward the energy we've shown since pre-season into the match,' the 39-year-old midfielder said. JDT have lifted the season-opening silverware nine times, including seven consecutive editions between 2018 and 2024. The clash between JDT and Selangor is seen as a long-awaited rematch after last season's Charity Shield encounter was cancelled following Selangor's last-minute withdrawal. Selangor were forced to pull out of the fixture due to a series of criminal incidents and threats involving several players, most notably the acid attack on winger Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim on May 5. As a result, JDT were awarded a 3-0 'walkover' victory and three Super League points - BERNAMA

Immigration FC Eye Darul Aman Stadium As Super League Home Ground

ALOR SETAR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Immigration FC (IFC) aim to make Darul Aman Stadium here their home ground for the 2025/2026 Super League season. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the team, which is under the Home Ministry, has sent a letter to the Kedah State Stadium Corporation for that purpose. 'But while waiting for a reply, we have to make preparations first. So for now, Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang will serve as IFC's home ground. bootstrap slideshow 'In addition, the Dato' Sheikh Ahmad Stadium (Kangar), which is undergoing renovation, will also be considered once the work is completed in two or three months,' he said. He was speaking to reporters at the unveiling of IFC's jersey and player line-up for the 2025/2026 Super League season here last night. Saifuddin Nasution said that as newcomers to the Super League, IFC, also known as the Mighty Tigers, hope to use Darul Aman Stadium as their home ground as it is seen as the best choice. 'We plan to lease Darul Aman Stadium for one season, which will generate good revenue for the stadium. It also won't clash with A1 League matches, which are played in the evening, while Super League matches are held at night,' he said. He added that IFC chose to base itself in Kedah or Perlis to give fans in the northern region an opportunity to watch Super League matches since no teams from either state will be competing in the league this season. 'So IFC offers an option for the northern region. If they want to see a team like JDT play up north, the best opportunity is when they play an away match against IFC. But fans will also have a second option of watching teams competing in the A1 League,' he said.

Tough August awaits Immigration FC, says coach

ALOR STAR: Immigration FC (IFC) head coach Yusri Che Lah has admitted that his team face a daunting start to their Super League campaign this month, with fixtures lined up against several top sides, including Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). Despite being debutants in the league, Yusri said he is optimistic that the team will put up a competitive fight. "We're only into our third week of training. It's not an excuse, but we do need time to build chemistry, especially with some of the foreign players who just arrived a few days ago," he said at a press conference yesterday. Yusri said the team are currently working to overcome communication barriers and climate adjustment issues among the foreign players, noting challenges such as time zone differences and fitness levels. "Some of the foreign players speak little to no English, and they're still getting used to the heat here in Kedah," he said. On their opening clash against Kuala Lumpur City FC, Yusri acknowledged the strength of their opponents, especially with the presence of national winger Safawi Rasid and Argentine playmaker Manuel Hidalgo. "KL City are a quality side, no doubt. But many of our boys are no strangers to the Super League environment. I'm hopeful they can step up and deliver," he said. Yusri stressed that every match is a platform for the team to prove themselves. "We're not a state team, so naturally our fan base is limited. But I treat every day like my first day on the job. I owe it to my new employer to give my best," he said.
