BeMC cracks down on eateries, single-use plastic in 12-hr drive
The multi-disciplinary squad seized 19 domestic LPG cylinders, destroyed 55kg of stale food from different establishments, including hostels, restaurants eateries and confiscated a huge amount of banned single-use plastic during the drive.
The raids, conducted from 9 am to 9 pm, were carried out under the direction of BeMC commissioner Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshirk and led by deputy commissioner Kalyani Sanghamitra.
The inspection covered areas such as Railway Station road, SNT Road, Sana Bazaar and Gate Bazaar. The aim was to curb the spread of diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases, especially during Rath Yatra, officials said.
Food safety officials collected fines over Rs 1.11 lakh, while the sanitary wing imposed penalties of Rs 1.91 lakh. "During the raids, we have destroyed around 55kg of stale food," said Liza Mishra, food safety officer.

Woman Crying Doesn't 'Per Se' Prove Dowry Harassment: Delhi High Court
The Delhi High Court has held that mere fact that a woman was crying, cannot per se make out any case of dowry harassment. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna made the observation while dismissing a petition against the discharge of a husband and his family from charges of cruelty and dowry harassment. According to the prosecution, the woman, married in December 2010, faced harassment and dowry demands from her husband and in-laws. Her family claimed that they spent nearly Rs 4 lakh on the wedding, alleging that later demands for a motorcycle, cash, and a gold bracelet were made by the husband and in-laws. The woman, a mother of two daughters, died on 31 March 2014. "Statement of the sister of the deceased under Section 161 Cr.P.C. was recorded wherein she also stated that on the occasion of Holi, she had called her sister and found her crying. However, merely because the deceased was crying, cannot per se make out any case of dowry harassment," the high court said. The trial court had discharged the accused noting that the death took place due to pneumonia, a natural cause. The high court also emphasised that the post-mortem report attributed the cause of death to pneumonia, not cruelty. "In the present case, to bring in the clause of cruelty leading to the death of the woman, it may be noted that the deceased had died not because of any act of cruelty but for natural reasons... Therefore, Clause (a) to the Explanation annexed to Section 498A IPC is not attracted," the Court said. It also observed that the father of the woman neither mentioned specific incidents nor did he provide proof of giving money to the accused. "Such bald assertions, in the given situation, cannot be held to be even making out a prima facie case of harassment," the judge added.

A ‘Special 26'-style heist in Gurgaon as gunmen posing as auditors loot finance office
Around 6 pm on Saturday, three men, one carrying a firearm, entered a Manappuram Finance office in Sector 5, off Sheetla Mata Road, claiming to be auditors. Within minutes, they brandished the weapon, assaulted two employees and fled with Rs 9 lakh in cash and gold, the police said. 'They entered the company office on Sheetla Mata Road, posing as auditors and showing a fake auditor ID to the security guard. One of the individuals was armed. The suspects brandished the weapon, robbed the office, and assaulted two employees, including assistant manager Krishna, with the butt of the gun, causing minor injuries,' a police spokesperson said Saturday night. The office, which offers loans against gold, confirmed that the stolen cash and gold were insured. Police teams from the Sector 5 station and other units remained at the scene late into the night, conducting investigations. Further details were not immediately available. The incident recalls previous high-profile robberies in India where criminals disguised themselves as government officials to gain access. In 2017, Delhi police arrested three suspected members of the Neeraj Bawania gang after they allegedly posed as CBI officers and attempted to rob a jeweller's home in Karol Bagh, an operation inspired by the Bollywood film Special 26. In that case, the suspects, one dressed in a khaki uniform, held the family at gunpoint before fleeing when a resident raised an alarm. In 2023, a dacoity gang in Hyderabad carried out a similar heist, posing as Income Tax officers and stealing gold worth Rs 60 lakh from a jewellery manufacturer in Secunderabad. That robbery, also modelled after Special 26, involved suspects showing fake ID cards, seizing workers' phones and locking them in a room before escaping with 17 gold coins. Police in Gurgaon said they are examining whether Saturday's heist bears similarities to those earlier cases.

Jewellery heist: Two arrested, gold worth Rs 60 L recovered
Suryapet: District SP K Narasimha informed that police have arrested two accused in connection with the theft that took place at Sri Sai Santoshi Jewellery Shop in Suryapet town on the night of July 21. From the arrested, police recovered 554 grams of gold worth Rs 60 lakh and Rs 92,500 cash. Addressing a press meet at the SP office on Saturday, he explained the case details. Using technical evidence, Suryapet police arrested accused Malik Molla from Baihor village, Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal, on August 11, recovering 554 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 87,500 cash. Another accused, Amar Bhatt from Nepal, was caught in Khammam with Rs 5,000. Police said Bhatt had provided shelter and conducted recce for the gang. Molla was produced before a local court in Balurghat, West Bengal, and was brought to Suryapet on transit remand for seven days. On July 27, police also arrested a woman accomplice, recovering 14 tolas of gold from her. During interrogation, the accused confessed that the gang, consisting of seven members, including three from Nepal and others from West Bengal, carried out the heist by drilling a hole through the back wall of the shop after conducting recce. SP Narasimha said that while three accused have been arrested, four others—Prakash Anil Kumar, Kadak Singh Ahul Walia, Puran Prasad Joshi (all from Nepal), and Jashimuddin from West Bengal—are still absconding. Special police teams are searching for them, and efforts are on to recover the remaining stolen property.
