Filipino superstars Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino have proven their chemistry translates to theatrical gold with their debut film pairing 'My Love Will Make You Disappear,' which pulled in approximately $500,000 during its opening weekend across North America.
The ABS-CBN Star Cinema romantic comedy, released by Abramorama, is now tracking for a projected $1.3M-$1.5 million theatrical run, positioning it among the top five highest-grossing Filipino films in North America since the pandemic.

This promising performance follows the distribution team's recent success with 'Hello, Love, Again,' another record-breaking ABS-CBN release. Industry veterans Amorette Jones, Evan Saxon and Joe Garel spearheaded the North American rollout, leveraging the considerable star power of the film's leads.
Chiu and Avelino, with a combined social media following exceeding 40 million, had previously established their on-screen chemistry in two hit television series, 'Linlang' and 'What Happened to Secretary Kim.' While both actors have individually headlined successful films, 'My Love Will Make You Disappear' marks their first time co-starring in a feature film.
The theatrical marketing campaign strategically targeted core Filipino-American audiences while expanding its reach to Asian-American, Hispanic and general moviegoers. The campaign capitalized on the stars' robust fan base to drive social media engagement, formed strategic partnerships with ABS-CBN Global's flagship platform for overseas audiences, and deployed a mix of digital, social and in-platform promotions.
Directed by Chad Vidanes from an original screenplay by Patrick Valencia and Isabella Policarpio, the film continues ABS-CBN's mission of bringing Filipino storytelling to global audiences. The story centers on universal themes of love, resilience and fate while showcasing 'kilig' — the uniquely Filipino feeling of romantic exhilaration — as a cultural export.
In the film, Chiu plays Sari, a woman who believes she's cursed because every man she loves mysteriously disappears. To protect herself from heartbreak, she swears off romance until meeting Jolo (Avelino), a brooding landlord struggling with personal failures and the burden of a failing apartment complex. As they work together to save the community from displacement, their bond deepens, forcing Sari to decide whether she's willing to risk Jolo disappearing too.
Chiu brings her signature charm to the role, drawing on her extensive experience across genres including romantic comedies ('Bride for Rent'), drama ('Etiquette for Mistresses') and horror ('The Ghost Bride'). Avelino, acclaimed for his intense performances in films like 'Heneral Luna' and 'Fan Girl,' balances brooding charisma with humor as Jolo.
The film's strong opening continues ABS-CBN and Star Cinema's momentum in expanding Filipino cinema internationally, following the studio's global success with 'Rewind,' the highest-grossing Filipino film worldwide.

Kelly Seeks Release From Prison, Claiming Officers Tried to Have Him Killed by Fellow Inmate Soon after the news broke, celebrities took to social media to share their condolences. Elton John took to Instagram Wednesday, calling Wilson 'the biggest influence on my songwriting ever.' 'Brian Wilson was always so kind to me from the day I met him,' John said. 'He sang 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' at a tribute concert in 2003, and it was an extraordinary moment for me. I played on his solo records, he sang on my album, The Union, and even performed for my AIDS Foundation.' I grew to love him as a person,' John continued. 'He was a musical genius and revolutionary. He changed the goalposts when it came to writing songs and shaped music forever. A true giant.' Bob Dylan posted his condolences on X as well. 'Heard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I've been listening to him and admiring his genius,' Dylan wrote. 'Rest in peace dear Brian.' John Stamos, who has performed with The Beach Boys, including their appearances on his hit sitcom Full House, shared a tribute on Instagram, which reads in part: 'Brian Wilson didn't just soundtrack my life…he filled it with color, with wonder, with some of the most unforgettable, emotional, joyful moments I've ever known. It's hard to put into words what it meant to stand beside him, laugh with him, play his music with him. Brian wasn't just a musical genius, he was a gentle, soulful, funny, complex, beautiful man. He heard things no one else could hear. He felt things deeper than most of us ever will. And somehow, he turned all of that into music that wrapped itself around the world and made us all feel less alone. I grew up worshipping the Beach Boys, never imagining one day I'd get to play with them, let alone call Brian a friend.' John Cusack, who played Wilson in the biopic Love & Mercy, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, 'The maestro has passed — Brian was a raw open heart with two legs — and an ear that heard the angels — quite literally. He was touched. To see him so happy with his wife Melinda — finally talking about and performing his unfinished masterpiece Smile, (after the release of the astounding Smile sessions) — to hear him be so open about the depth of his struggles so that the telling of his story might help others and take away the stigma of mental health — was to see a triumph of endurance and spirit, love and Mercy.' Love & Mercy director Bill Pohlad also said in a statement to THR, 'Brian was a true genius and I was honored to have gotten to know him a bit in the making of LOVE & MERCY. What an extraordinary artist! I will miss his presence on this earth. So many of his songs come to mind when I think of him. GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT I'D BE WITH OUT (him).' Nancy Sinatra shared on Instagram: 'His cherished music will live forever as he travels through the Universe and beyond. God bless you, sweet Brian. One of the biggest thrills of my life was singing 'California Girls' with Brian.' The Beach Boys themselves shared a tribute on Instagram, writing in part, 'Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys — he was the soul of our sound. The melodies he dreamed up and the emotions he poured into every note changed the course of music forever. His unparalleled talent and unique spirit created the soundtrack of so many lives around the globe, including our own. Together, we gave the world the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedom — music that made people feel good, made them believe in summer and endless possibilities.' Actor Wendell Pierce wrote on X: 'Brian Wilson RIP 82 years old Troubled life Gotta put on Love & Mercy …I was lying in my room And the news came on TV A lotta people out there hurtin' And it really scares me Love and mercy, that's what you need tonight Love and mercy to you and your friends tonight…' Ronnie Wood, a member of the Rolling Stones, also wrote on X: 'Oh no Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week ~ my world is in mourning. So sad.' Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, said in a statement: 'Brian Wilson was one of the most talented singer-songwriters in the history of recorded music. Not only did his songs capture the spirit of youth, joy and longing in ways that still inspire millions of fans around the world, his innovative work in the studio transformed the way musicians record even to this day. Brian made an indelible mark, and our thoughts are with his family in this time of loss.' See the tributes below. Paul McCartney, Carole King and Others Pay Tribute to Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson, the leader of the Beach Boys who death at 82 was announced on Wednesday, provided a joyous soundtrack for beach vacations and summer road trips for generations of people. Their influence on the surf rock genre and on popular music generally was recognized by the variety of people who paid respects on social media to Wilson on Wednesday. Here's what some of Wilson's friends had to say about his death and legacy. Paul McCartney, a Wilson contemporary, noted that there was a chorus of tributes from other musicians, saying Wilson had a 'mysterious sense of musical genius' that made his songs special. 'The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time,' McCartney said. 'I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while. How we will continue without Brian Wilson, 'God Only Knows.'' Carole King, also a contemporary, wrote on Facebook that Wilson was her friend and brother in songwriting. 'We shared a similar sensibility, as evidenced by his 4 over 5 chord under 'Aaaah!' in 'Good Vibrations' and mine under 'I'm Into Something Good,'' she said. 'We once discussed who used it first, and in the end we decided it didn't matter.' In 2015, 'Love & Mercy,' a biopic about Wilson's life starring John Cusack was released. On Wednesday, Cusack said that the 'maestro' had died, adding that the hitmaker was an open heart with two legs 'with an ear that heard the angels.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

K. Michelle Checks Interviewer About Her Country Music Roots: ‘I Didn't Fly Here — I Grew Here'

Source: Jason Kempin / Getty More Black artists are embracing country music than ever before, as many have finally felt that the time is right to pursue a genre of music where Black musicians have traditionally been overlooked. In a recent interview, K. Michelle, known for her R&B music, corrected an interviewer about her country music roots during an appearance at the 2025 CMA Fest. When the interviewer told K. Michelle that she 'didn't grow up with country music,' the former Love & Hip Hop star offered a reply that cleared up any misconceptions. 'I did grow up in country music. You do this all the time. I'm from Memphis, Tennessee. I got a scholarship for yodeling — that's how I paid for college,' she fired back. 'My start, to you, has been when the Judd [family] reached out to me to go pay Naomi Judd tribute.' 'It's always been a thing for me. I was told I could not sing country music because I was Black, but it was something I had always been doing and will continue to do. I'm born and raised in Tennessee. I grew here, I didn't fly here,' K. Michelle added. 'I am so happy to be able to sing the songs of who I am and what it is I want to. So, I'm happy that people like you are just discovering me though' she said. When the interviewer pointed out that K. Michelle was an unknown to contemporary country music radio, she replied 'Well, you don't hear a lot of women in contemporary radio, period, right now. And you really don't hear Black ones, but you will.' In 2024, K. Michelle officially signed to BMG Nashville and released her first country single, 'Tennessee,' which was released earlier this year. Her debut country album Puddin's Outla Music is set to be released in 2025. SEE ALSO K.
