Filipino superstars Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino have proven their chemistry translates to theatrical gold with their debut film pairing 'My Love Will Make You Disappear,' which pulled in approximately $500,000 during its opening weekend across North America.
The ABS-CBN Star Cinema romantic comedy, released by Abramorama, is now tracking for a projected $1.3M-$1.5 million theatrical run, positioning it among the top five highest-grossing Filipino films in North America since the pandemic.

This promising performance follows the distribution team's recent success with 'Hello, Love, Again,' another record-breaking ABS-CBN release. Industry veterans Amorette Jones, Evan Saxon and Joe Garel spearheaded the North American rollout, leveraging the considerable star power of the film's leads.
Chiu and Avelino, with a combined social media following exceeding 40 million, had previously established their on-screen chemistry in two hit television series, 'Linlang' and 'What Happened to Secretary Kim.' While both actors have individually headlined successful films, 'My Love Will Make You Disappear' marks their first time co-starring in a feature film.
The theatrical marketing campaign strategically targeted core Filipino-American audiences while expanding its reach to Asian-American, Hispanic and general moviegoers. The campaign capitalized on the stars' robust fan base to drive social media engagement, formed strategic partnerships with ABS-CBN Global's flagship platform for overseas audiences, and deployed a mix of digital, social and in-platform promotions.
Directed by Chad Vidanes from an original screenplay by Patrick Valencia and Isabella Policarpio, the film continues ABS-CBN's mission of bringing Filipino storytelling to global audiences. The story centers on universal themes of love, resilience and fate while showcasing 'kilig' — the uniquely Filipino feeling of romantic exhilaration — as a cultural export.
In the film, Chiu plays Sari, a woman who believes she's cursed because every man she loves mysteriously disappears. To protect herself from heartbreak, she swears off romance until meeting Jolo (Avelino), a brooding landlord struggling with personal failures and the burden of a failing apartment complex. As they work together to save the community from displacement, their bond deepens, forcing Sari to decide whether she's willing to risk Jolo disappearing too.
Chiu brings her signature charm to the role, drawing on her extensive experience across genres including romantic comedies ('Bride for Rent'), drama ('Etiquette for Mistresses') and horror ('The Ghost Bride'). Avelino, acclaimed for his intense performances in films like 'Heneral Luna' and 'Fan Girl,' balances brooding charisma with humor as Jolo.
The film's strong opening continues ABS-CBN and Star Cinema's momentum in expanding Filipino cinema internationally, following the studio's global success with 'Rewind,' the highest-grossing Filipino film worldwide.

Las Vegas ‘Filipino Town' boosts cultural development

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – It's been less than two month since Clark County officially proclaimed the area along Maryland Parkway between Desert Inn and Flamingo roads, 'Filipino Town.' With the official title now set, many Las Vegas residents across the valley have taken an interest and want a piece of the cultural district. Boulevard Mall General Manager and President Timo Kuusela said he is excited about the new developments on the horizon for the newly recognized cultural hub, 'Filipino Town.' 'We're seeing a lot of action heat up now,' Kuusela told 8 News Now. Anchor stores, such as a supermarket and a well-known Filipino restaurant, could build foot traffic- something the area desperately needs. Other ethnic businesses are in the pipeline Kuusela said. 'Currently, we're in discussions with several companies and we hope to see them opening up here in the next six months or so,' he added. Cultural activist, Rozita Lee spearheaded the initiative to get the area along Maryland Parkway between Desert Inn and Flamingo roads designated as 'Filipino Town.' Lee said that seeing her dreams become a reality is beyond rewarding. 'I was the one that went to see Commissioner Tick Segerblom, and I asked him what the possibility was of having a designated area for Filipinos because there are 250,000 of us in Las Vegas now and we are growing,' Lee said. Part of her master plan includes opening a museum, showcasing Filipino artifacts, and promoting Filipino artists. 'The museum is an entity that we feel will draw people and educate people about our culture. Timo of Boulevard Mall was kind enough to open a space for us,' Lee said. Currently, plans are still in the works with no construction date set, but Lee told 8 News Now that they are looking at naming it, 'The Museum for Filipino Town Las Vegas.' Down the way, near where the Dillard's used to be, Fashion Designer, David Tupaz, was thrilled to see this cultural corridor come to fruition. 'It was a blessing when 'Filipino Town' was established in April, and now the Boulevard Mall awarded an area where we could build a Filipino museum,' Tupaz said. He also said he plans to open a retail shop inside the mall just in time for holiday shoppers. 'I have a brand, and I was thinking of opening a showroom in the mall. I might as well set a presence where my people are, right?' Tupaz added. Boulevard Mall was the first mall in Nevada, opening in 1968. 57 years later, it's getting a full makeover to attract new business in an ever-changing retail landscape. You can expect to see signs designating 'Filipino Town' sometime this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. I came from nothing, just a small boy; no shoes, no food, no chance, just a dream in my heart. I know pain, but I also know what God can do if you keep the Faith and never give up. Every fight, every victory, was a step further from poverty. It was not just for me but for my family, for the Filipino people," said Pacquiao on YouTube. Vinny Paz, the three-division champion who overcame a broken neck sustained in a car crash to resume his career, and Michael Nunn, a champion at middleweight and super middleweight, were the other top men's fighters in the class. Tony Award-winning musical, "The Light in the Piazza," takes audience on emotional journey about love

The Tony Award-winning musical, "The Light in the Piazza", is now on stage at the Huntington Theater, but it may not be your typical musical, as some of the characters speak and sing in Italian. But the story about love, hope, growing up, and letting go is universal. The piece takes place in the summer of 1953, as Margaret and Clara Johnson go on vacation in Florence. Tony-nominated actor Emily Skinner portrays Margaret, with Sarah-Anne Martinez taking on the role of Clara. Skinner said, "The show is about love. The show is about romantic love and familial love and maternal love. " "In the beginning, we see how much Clara relies on her mom as not only her eyes to the outside world, her way of understanding the world around her, but also her advocate," explained Martinez. That relationship changes once Clara meets Fabrizio and falls in love. "She has a moment of independence where she says, 'Mom, this is who I am. Will you support me in this journey that I want to go on?' And so Margaret then has to have faith that her daughter is ready to grow into herself. And I think that's so beautiful. That's something that so many people go through with their own mothers or their own parents. That moment of saying, this is who I am. I'm an adult now. See me, and then we can grow together," Martinez told WBZ-TV. A full orchestra accompanies the musical While many modern musicals feature a pop score, the music here is very different. Skinner said, "The Huntington is doing something amazing. We have a full orchestra with the show. That's rare. That's rare even on Broadway nowadays. And to get to hear this big lush, the orchestrations played so gorgeously." Martinez agreed, "It's not only a beautifully orchestrated piece, but it's also emotionally challenging to perform, because it's such a vulnerable moment in her life. And I think that it's so rare to have such a romantic, lush, original score. And so this one is just, it's so special." Director Loretta Grecco's take on the piece is to look at it as a play with music that enhances the storytelling, making an impact. "Not everybody knows about this show, and so some people might come into it knowing the story, knowing they're going to go on this emotional journey, but when you don't know, it's such a beautiful surprise," says Martinzez. "And so I think some people are really taken aback by how deeply this story gets into their hearts." You can see The Light in the Piazza at the Huntington Theater in Boston through Sunday, June 15th.
