Filipino superstars Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino have proven their chemistry translates to theatrical gold with their debut film pairing 'My Love Will Make You Disappear,' which pulled in approximately $500,000 during its opening weekend across North America.
The ABS-CBN Star Cinema romantic comedy, released by Abramorama, is now tracking for a projected $1.3M-$1.5 million theatrical run, positioning it among the top five highest-grossing Filipino films in North America since the pandemic.

This promising performance follows the distribution team's recent success with 'Hello, Love, Again,' another record-breaking ABS-CBN release. Industry veterans Amorette Jones, Evan Saxon and Joe Garel spearheaded the North American rollout, leveraging the considerable star power of the film's leads.
Chiu and Avelino, with a combined social media following exceeding 40 million, had previously established their on-screen chemistry in two hit television series, 'Linlang' and 'What Happened to Secretary Kim.' While both actors have individually headlined successful films, 'My Love Will Make You Disappear' marks their first time co-starring in a feature film.
The theatrical marketing campaign strategically targeted core Filipino-American audiences while expanding its reach to Asian-American, Hispanic and general moviegoers. The campaign capitalized on the stars' robust fan base to drive social media engagement, formed strategic partnerships with ABS-CBN Global's flagship platform for overseas audiences, and deployed a mix of digital, social and in-platform promotions.
Directed by Chad Vidanes from an original screenplay by Patrick Valencia and Isabella Policarpio, the film continues ABS-CBN's mission of bringing Filipino storytelling to global audiences. The story centers on universal themes of love, resilience and fate while showcasing 'kilig' — the uniquely Filipino feeling of romantic exhilaration — as a cultural export.
In the film, Chiu plays Sari, a woman who believes she's cursed because every man she loves mysteriously disappears. To protect herself from heartbreak, she swears off romance until meeting Jolo (Avelino), a brooding landlord struggling with personal failures and the burden of a failing apartment complex. As they work together to save the community from displacement, their bond deepens, forcing Sari to decide whether she's willing to risk Jolo disappearing too.
Chiu brings her signature charm to the role, drawing on her extensive experience across genres including romantic comedies ('Bride for Rent'), drama ('Etiquette for Mistresses') and horror ('The Ghost Bride'). Avelino, acclaimed for his intense performances in films like 'Heneral Luna' and 'Fan Girl,' balances brooding charisma with humor as Jolo.
The film's strong opening continues ABS-CBN and Star Cinema's momentum in expanding Filipino cinema internationally, following the studio's global success with 'Rewind,' the highest-grossing Filipino film worldwide.

American Black Film Festival is in Miami. Here are some films to check out

As the pandemic forced a global shutdown halting businesses, communities and touching every aspect of how society functioned in 2020, a pivotal election was brewing across the U.S. — one that would have a major effect on southern states. And as that chaos brewed, Black Voters Matter decided to meet the moment. Their efforts to energize and register voters is chronicled in a new documentary, 'Love, Joy & Power: Tools For Liberation.' That story is one of several films screening at the American Black Film Festival when it rolls into town this week highlighting Black storytellers and providing resources for those in the filmmaking industry. Black Voters Matter co-founder Cliff Albright said the film is a story about overcoming, pointing out the significance of the film's debut close to Juneteenth. 'It's not just the story of 2020 or the story of Black Voters Matters, it's really a story of how we have historically overcome, including going back to just Juneteenth,' he told the Herald. 'It shows the work that we're doing, but it also shows what movement is really like.' The film's timing is not lost on Albright, who said the story is essential at a time when Black stories and how they are shared is either being banned or altered in schools and libraries. 'Liberation' is just one of the films ABFF attendees can see when it kicks of Wednesday. We've put together a few more for you all to check out: 'Love, Joy & Power: Tools For Liberation' In this documentary, readers are taken on a journey through the efforts of Black Voters Matter to turn Georgia 'purple' in the 2020 election through grassroots voting efforts across the South, including Florida. The film, directed by Daresha Kyi, will screen at 1:10 p.m. Thursday at O Cinema. 'The ReWrite.' What is an authentic Black voice? That's what screenwriter Elliot (Stephen Barrington) obsesses over after he is told by white executives how Black people should sound and act. He wrestles with this as he tries to find the balance between being authentic and making money. 'I just want to sell without selling out,' he says. The film, directed by Terry Dawson, debuts at ABFF at 2:15 p.m. Thursday at Miami Beach Convention Center in Screening Room #2. 'Wait Until Tomorrow' The intersection of race, wealth and opportunity take center stage in this documentary that follows the lives of various Black families in the United States. The stories drive home the realities behind data examining the search for economic mobility. Directed by Osato Dixon will show at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at O Cinema. 'Carnival: They Can't Steal Our Joy' The colors. The beads. The feathers. The sounds. These are some of the things that make up Caribbean Carnival. But Ian Mark Kimanje's film, 'Carnival: They Can't Steal Our Joy,' pulls back the layers of the festival's significance culturally and historically in Toronto and beyond. Making its U.S. premier, the film will screen at O Cinema at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

This underrated Steve Carell movie is one of my favorite coming-of-age comedies — and it's now on Prime Video

Steve Carell is known for big-budget comedies like "The 40 Year-Old Virgin," "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and the "Anchorman" franchise, but some of the actor's best work is in smaller-scale fare like "Little Miss Sunshine," "Dan in Real Life" and "The Way, Way Back". In particular, that latter title — which sees an against-type performance from Carell as a nightmare stepfather — is a surefire summertime charmer, complete with a fantastic ensemble full of some of Hollywood's funniest people. And, best of all, it's currently available to stream on Prime Video. Amazon's streaming service is stocked with great titles across all genres, including crowd-pleasing comedies, and "The Way, Way Back" is certainly no exception. The coming-of-age story serves up humor and heart in equal turns, and will instantly transport you back to those long, sunny days of youthful, no-school summer. Here's why you should add the sweet teen comedy to your Prime Video watch list. Written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash in their directorial debuts, 2013's "The Way, Way Back" centers on Duncan (Liam James), an introverted 14-year-old on summer vacation in a New England beach town with his mother Pam (Toni Collete), her overbearing boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell) and Trent's daughter Steph (Zoe Levin). Trent is quite hard on Duncan — the older man tells the teen to rate himself on a scale of one to ten and harshly dubs him a three — and, even worse, he's caught by the boy cheating on Pam with a friend's wife (Amanda Peet). To escape the messiness of it all, Duncan finds solace at the rundown local water park, Water Wizz, where he encounters a merry band of colorful employees (played by Maya Rudolph, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, among others), all led by wisecracking but compassionate park manager Owen (Sam Rockwell). Though Duncan's family is none the wiser about where he's spending his summer days, the teen is hired by Owen for odd jobs around the park and soon the wallflower opens up, even catching the attention of Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), the pretty daughter of his neighbor Betty (a scene-stealing Allison Janney). There's a sweet nostalgia that permeates "The Way, Way Back" — fittingly, the title refers to sitting in the third row of seats in old-school station wagons — and a youthful relatability to Duncan's story. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. And along with a believably villainous turn from usual good-guy Steve Carell, the unexpected buddy duo of Sam Rockwell and Liam James is an especially delightful attribute. Both actors received Critics' Choice nominations for their performances, as did the comedy film as a whole. Rockwell's warm and witty screen work, in particular, was lauded by critics: David Gritten at The Daily Telegraph wrote: "Rockwell seizes on this role and milks it for all it's worth." And for The Guardian, Catherine Shoard also showed love to Carell and Collette: "There's some terrific performances – particularly from Collette, putting flesh on some quite bare bones, and Carell, a wholly plausible, half-sympathetic overgrown jock with a bullying charm." On Rotten Tomatoes, where the movie has an 83% approval rating, critical consensus reads: "Despite its familiar themes, 'The Way Way Back' makes use of its talented cast, finely tuned script, and an abundance of charm to deliver a funny and satisfying coming-of-age story." Wynne Evans engaged

Wynne Evans has got engaged. The 53-year-old opera singer popped the question to girlfriend Liz Brookes over the weekend while they were on holiday in Morocco and he is feeling "a tiny bit smug" after she said yes. Sharing photos from the proposal, Wynne wrote on Instagram: "Big news… I got engaged! "This weekend in Morocco, somewhere between the couscous, the camels, and me limping around the souks like a man with no spatial awareness, I proposed to Liz — and she said yes! (No take-backs, I've checked.) "She's clever, she's kind, she's got excellent taste in men. Absolutely no idea how I pulled that off, but here we are! "Feeling very lucky, very happy, and just a tiny bit smug." The happy news comes after a tough few months for Wynne, after he was axed from the Strictly Come Dancing tour for making a sexually suggestive remark during a photocall and subsequently had the BBC confirm they wouldn't renew his rolling contract. A source told The Sun newspaper: "It has been a tumultuous six months for Wynne but Liz has been his absolute rock throughout. "Finally some wonderful news for Wynne and his inner circle to celibate and everyone is chuffed for them both. "He secretly bought an engagement ring and squirrelled it away for their holiday, and then popped the question over champagne. "Liz has been incredible over the past few months, supporting him through thick and thin, and had his back throughout, but obviously Wynne is telling everyone she's a lucky girl!" Wynne - who has two children with ex-wife Tanwen - revealed late last month that his BBC Radio Wales contract hadn't been used following a four-month investigation into the Strictly incident, for which he had previously apologised. In a new video on Instagram, he said: 'My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart - thank you. 'These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know. 'It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. 'That show wasn't just work - it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family.' A spokesperson for the BBC told MailOnline: 'Wynne Evans is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him.' However, Wynne revealed plans for a new show, which will air on a new app and website.
