Google introduces 'AI Mode' for agentic web search experience: How it works

At the keynote session of Google I/O 2025, Google shared details on the evolution of its AI Mode, designed to deliver an agentic web search experience. Initially introduced in March, AI Mode has since been enhanced to offer users faster, more intuitive, and more comprehensive search results. Here are the new updates coming to the AI Mode:
AI Mode: Automating complex search tasks
Google said that the AI Mode represents a significant shift in how web searches are conducted. Instead of requiring users to sift through multiple pages of results, the tool autonomously handles the more tedious aspects of online research.
For complex topics – where standard search methods may prove insufficient – AI Mode acts as a digital agent. It uses a technique called query fan-out, which dissects the user's primary query into smaller, more specific sub-queries. It then conducts multiple searches in parallel, collecting information from a wide range of sources. The system compiles this data into a single, in-depth response, complete with source links for verification.
According to Google, this entire process is completed within seconds, significantly reducing the time and effort typically required to gather relevant and trustworthy information.
AI Mode: Agentic web search rollout
The rollout will initially kick off in the US and support tasks such as buying event tickets, making restaurant reservations, and booking local appointments. Google is partnering with platforms including Ticketmaster, StubHub, Resy, and Vagaro to deliver a seamless, integrated user experience.
What Is Project Mariner
Project Mariner is an experimental initiative built on Google's Gemini 2.0 AI model, aiming to redefine human-computer interaction within web browsers.
According to Google, Project Mariner is designed to understand and interpret on-screen content, including text, images, code, and form elements. It enables the AI to interact meaningfully with websites by processing both visual and structural components, allowing it to complete complex tasks such as filling out forms, navigating UI elements, and compiling personalised search results.

After building a health-focused food and beverage product with two friends—bootstrapping, multitasking, and learning everything from scratch—he now finds himself lost in a job market that doesn't know where to place him. 'We Built, We Burned, Now What?' The post reads like a quiet elegy to a dream that once soared. The founder speaks of wearing every possible hat—from marketing and finance to customer support and design. No AI tools then, just endless Google searches and YouTube tutorials. Despite the hustle, the venture hit a ceiling—unable to scale, with no funds left to pump in. His partners stepped away, and the founder reluctantly began job hunting, only to be met with silence or, worse, rejection for being 'overqualified,' 'too founder-y,' or 'not domain-specific enough.' The Dilemma of the 'Misfit' He's not asking for a CXO role. Just a chance to contribute—to bring the value of lived, practical experience into structured setups. But the corporate world, as netizens pointed out, often sees people like him as unsafe bets. 'They want people who can innovate within their control,' one user wrote, echoing a harsh truth. In a system that prizes predictability over potential, founders are sometimes viewed with suspicion. Netizens Share Brutal Truths and Hope The post has garnered strong, supportive reactions from fellow Redditors and professionals. One suggested looking into startups within the same industry. Another spoke about the Indian corporate system's rigidity when it comes to reabsorbing former entrepreneurs. 'You, my friend, will have to search harder,' they wrote. Yet another comment advised the path of an Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EiR), using past mistakes as fuel for new guidance. There's also a silver lining. As one commenter noted, 'Take one skill you truly own… and share it.' Whether through learning platforms, consultancy, or new ventures, those hard-earned insights don't need to die quietly. They can be repurposed and rebranded. Because in this era of AI-led disruption and rapid change, real experience still holds immense, if underappreciated, power. The Bottom Line Not all founder stories end with acquisition, IPOs, or Forbes covers. Some end in silence, in resumes ignored, in doors half-open. But these quiet chapters deserve to be told—because they are real, raw, and deeply human. And perhaps, like the Redditor in question, others floating in the 'in-between' will find solace in knowing they're not alone.

Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference is all set to take off from 9 June, marking the Cupertino-based tech giant's second-biggest event of the year where it demonstrates all its software prowess. Over the last year, Apple has received a lot of flak for its patchy rollout of new software updates, along with delays in AI features, some of which still haven't arrived. However, the company will likely try to shift attention from those concerns as it focuses on a major rebrand with the unveiling of iOS 26 at WWDC 2025, a significant departure from the current naming scheme used by Cupertino. Gurman says the new AI features to be unveiled by Apple at WWDC 2025 will be minor and are unlikely to impress industry watchers, especially at a time when the pace of AI progress is accelerating, with companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI announcing new products almost every month. Among the AI features Apple is reportedly planning this year is a systemwide push into translation. The Translate functionality will be integrated across Apple operating systems as part of Apple Intelligence, with its main use case being live translation of phone calls and text messages. Gurman adds that the biggest AI-related announcement by Apple will be opening up its large language models (LLMs), the building blocks behind Apple Intelligence, to outside app developers. This will allow them to build their own AI features using the same technology that powers tools like Genmoji and Apple's writing aids. Apple is also expected to announce an upgraded version of its foundation models for both on-device and cloud use at WWDC 2025. Notably, developers will be given access to the on-device version of these LLMs. In terms of other AI announcements, there is unlikely to be any update on Apple's long awaited Siri revamp. Moreover, the Apple's partnership with Google to use Gemini in its apps is also unlikely to be announced at this year's WWDC.

Unnoticed, UAE may have curated workable concept for AI regulation

On a recent trip (no secret, to attend the keynote and briefings at Google I/O a few weeks ago), my ears caught the sound of a rather interesting podcast aboard an Emirates A380. Usually these tend to be about food or lifestyle — though the one with Kilian Hennessy is exceptional too — but to have one in which United Arab Emirates' Minister of State for AI, Omar Al Olama talks about his vision of artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, is quite extraordinary. Also because he is the world's first minister for all things AI, appointed in October 2017. His vision is a bit different from everything I've heard from regulators in many countries, including India. Instead of regulation being structured as a restriction, Al Olama's approach lies in a philosophy that hopes to balance innovation with responsibility. Rather than rushing to implement what may prove to be restrictive regulations, since its still early days considering the contours of the AI space evolve almost every other day, the UAE has positioned itself as what Al Olama calls 'a responsible AI nation.' There are five key tenets to UAE's approach to AI, a working blueprint that many other countries could do well to look closely at. First, the UAE aims to become a global leader in AI by 2031. Secondly, there is belief that AI will be a 'new lifeblood' for both governments and the private sector, transforming various industries. Third, the country envisions a future where individuals have multiple digital assistants, potentially reaching PhD-level capabilities. Fourth, UAE is actively seeking international partnerships and investments to strengthen its position as a global technology hub. And lastly, there is a willingness to play a key role in the framing of internationally applicable rules to ensure AI security and safety, as well as build frameworks for protection of personal data and privacy. The fact is simple, Al Olama knows what he is talking about. As far back as in 2019, during a keynote speech at Orchestrating Winning Performance in Dubai, he noted, 'Everyone is talking about AI. Whoever is going to lead in the Artificial Intelligence race will lead the future. This technology will change the world.' Fast forward to 2025, and we have AI which undoubtedly is part of many a workflow for businesses and enterprises, and individuals are learning to trust AI tools more slowly but steadily (whether being careful enough is a debate for another day). In the past few years, UAE has silently gone about meaning business. But there is a demographic change that needs to happen, sooner rather than later, if the country has to achieve its mission. According to the latest UNESCO data, 0.19% of the UAE's population are working as full time researchers in science, technology, and innovation. In contrast, Korea, which leads this metric, clocks in with 0.69%, followed by Singapore (0.66%) and Norway (0.59%). The US finds 0.42% of its population in these roles, while India clocks in with 0.02% (important to note — this percentage is looking worse than it may be, owing to a much higher comparative baseline population number). A few days ago, the UAE released a new Arabic-language AI model, called Falcon Arabic, in an effort to make AI locally relevant and accessible. This is something experts too have talked about. India is working on its own LLM, or large language model. As is Singapore. These are just some examples, in the search of an AI that understands local context and sensitivities more than a global model perhaps might. Falcon Arabic has been trained on a dataset spanning Modern Standard Arabic and regional dialects, and Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute (TII) claims this model matches the performance of models up to 10 times its size. This model may still find it difficult to match up to the likes of Google Gemini, China's DeepSeek and OpenAI as well as Anthropic's fast evolving GPT and Claude models respectively, but it is a start nonetheless. There is an understanding that isolation, and go-it-alone doesn't work. OpenAI and the UAE are working together for something called the Stargate UAE, a 1-gigawatt AI supercomputing cluster in Abu Dhabi, as part of the AI company's 'OpenAI for Countries' initiative. American tech companies like Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, and SoftBank, as well as G42, an Emirati artificial intelligence firm, are all part of various AI projects. But it's likely you may have seen excitable headlines about all UAE residents being given free subscriptions to ChatGPT Plus — because that gets the citizens involved. The US sees this as an opportunity too. Tech companies in the US, presently develop the world's most advanced semiconductor chips. The other side of that coin has the UAE that can offer abundant, low-cost energy that is needed to power enormous AI data centres. Back to the regulation approach for a moment. The European Union has pursued comprehensive legislation through the AI Act, which categorises AI systems by risk levels and imposes strict requirements on high-risk applications. They have the GDPR as an example that their regulation methods are thorough, as it is the case here too. But then again, it can also be overly complex for tech companies to navigate, and could stifle innovation particularly for companies with limited resources. The United States has thus far taken a more fragmented approach, with a lack of comprehensive federal legislation, but that could change once the Trump administration gets down to regulating AI. India currently doesn't have rules that regulate AI just yet, but the country is in the process of formulating and implementing policy frameworks to govern various aspects of AI. The blueprint is there for other countries to look closely at, but the UAE has an advantage of geographical size, its political structure and economic positioning that may be difficult for larger countries to work with — getting a consensus may not be as easy there, as would geographic, economic and human limitations that may come into play. But AI regulation is around the bend, just that we may have differing approaches for the time being. (Vishal Mathur is the Technology Editor for HT.
