Barcelona and Villarreal close to staging controversial LaLiga match in United States

Independent8 hours ago
Barcelona and Villarreal have moved a step closer to playing a league game in the United States in December.
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed it had given approval to a request from the clubs on Monday.
The federation said in a statement: "After receiving and checking the documentation received, and after the approval of the board of directors, the RFEF will submit to Uefa the request to begin the procedures for the subsequent authorisation by Fifa for the match to be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20, 2025, in accordance with the Fifa international match regulations and the implementing rules approved by the RFEF."
If LaLiga is successful, it will become the first of Europe's 'Big Five' leagues to stage one of its matches outside its own territory.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in April last year his competition had no plans to move matches overseas but accepted Fifa moves to review the rules meant the "door was ajar" for other leagues to do so.
Fifa first said it was considering changing its authorisation rules on such matches in a statement following a settlement it agreed with Relevent Sports in a court case in the United States in April 2024.
The following month, Fifa said it was forming a working group to "consider a revised legal framework" governing the authorisation of matches played overseas.
Supporter groups associated with Barcelona and Villarreal issued a post on social media alongside the Spanish football supporters' association (FASFE), saying they wanted to "express our absolute, total and firm opposition" to playing the match overseas.
They urged the Spanish football federation and the national sports council (CSD) to "stop this madness".
The fan groups' statement concluded by warning that, if the project went ahead, they would "take appropriate legal action to prevent it".

Bayer Leverkusen 'eye ex-Man United star as Erik ten Hag plots reunion with free agent' after eight years at Old Trafford

Bayer Leverkusen are plotting a move for former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof, according to a report. Lindelof departed United this summer following the expiry of his contract, bringing an end to an eight-year spell at Old Trafford The Swede is now a free agent and attracting interest from Erik ten Hag 's Leverkusen, who are finalising the move as per Sky Germany. The report states that the Bundesliga club value the 31-year-old's experience and leadership qualities. Ten Hag knows Lindelof well, having managed him throughout his time in charge at Old Trafford. Leverkusen lost some leadership and experience this summer following the departure of Jonathan Tah, who joined Bayern Munich as a free agent. Bayer Leverkusen boss Erik Ten Hag knows Lindelof well, having managed him at United Lindelof would become Leverkusen's second centre back acquisition after Jarell Quanah's £35million move from Liverpool. He arrived at United from Benfica for £30.7m in 2017 and went on to establish himself as a regular over eight seasons at Old Trafford. The defender played 284 games for the club, winning a League Cup and an FA Cup. Following his last appearance for United in May, Lindelof told MUTV: 'Yeah, I am proud of myself. Carter feared James would face 'astronomical' abuse

Jess Carter feared team-mate Lauren James would suffer "astronomical" racist abuse if she had been the only England player to miss a penalty in the Euro 2025 quarter-final shootout against Sweden. Chelsea forward James was the target of online racist abuse in 2021 when playing for Manchester United and again in 2023 when at was the target of online racism during the tournament, with the Football Association (FA) working with the police to try to identify those missed England's second penalty in Zurich, but Beth Mead, Alex Greenwood and Grace Clinton - who are all white - went on to miss as those misses the Lionesses still managed to progress, before going on to beat Spain in the final in another penalty told ITN: "It's horrible to say but it's almost like a sigh of relief when other players that weren't black missed a penalty, because the racism that would have come with LJ [Lauren James] being the only one that missed would have been astronomical."It's not because we want them to fail - it's about knowing how it's going to be for us [black England players] if we miss." Speaking about the impact the abuse had on her, Carter said: "It makes you feel really small. It makes you feel like you're not important, that you're not valuable."It makes you second guess everything that you do - it's not a nice place to be. It doesn't make me feel confident going back on to the pitch. My family was so devastated by it as well and so sad." FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said during the tournament that the governing body had referred the "abhorrent" abuse to UK stepped back from social media following the abuse, though she said the support received from the England fans "meant everything".The England team decided to stop taking the knee before matches, with manager Sarina Wiegman saying the impact of the anti-racism gesture was "not good enough".Carter said the psychological impact of the abuse she suffered made her feel "scared" when Wiegman told her she had been selected to play in the final."That's the first time I've ever been scared - too scared to play," she added."I think it was a mixture of such a big game, but then on top of that [I was] scared of whatever abuse might come with it, whether it's football based or whether it was going to be the racial abuse that was going to come with it because I did something wrong." Premier League 2025-26 preview No 13: Manchester City

Guardian writers' predicted position: 3rd (NB: this is not necessarily Will Unwin's prediction but the average of our writers' tips) Last season: 3rd Plenty of money, about £300m, has been spent over the past eight months to get City back on track after a disastrous season by their standards. They finished a distant third and lost the FA Cup final, leaving them trophyless. The latest crop of incomings got a brief taste of life under Pep Guardiola at the Club World Cup and all showed promise. After Rodri missed most of last season, it feels as if his fitness will decide the fate of the team. If Guardiola can get him back to his best – and keep him fit – after a horrible injury, then City can feel excited once again. Guardiola has indicated City need to adapt to the evolution of football, having struggled with the increase in physicality and fitness that has blunted their skills. There could be a greater emphasis on dribbling past opponents to try to open up the spaces. Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Jérémy Doku and Savinho will be extremely important in a post-Kevin De Bruyne world. City struggled more than ever when it came to breaking down teams last season and Guardiola felt his team were unable to cope with the physicality of others. It will be interesting to see who gets the nod in goal on the opening weekend. Ederson has been Guardiola's No 1 for years, but the arrival of James Trafford could change that. The Brazilian has redefined the position and Trafford, a former City academy player, is part of a new generation who followed his strategy and have attempted to replicate his ability to distribute the ball short and long. Trafford is young and not the finished article, but he has all the qualities to be a world-class goalkeeper for years to come. At the other end, Erling Haaland will be as dangerous as always, with fitness the only question mark hanging over him after some disruptions. Unlike this time last year, Guardiola has a second striker he can all upon if needs be in Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian was integral in reigniting City's season after arriving in January and should be fully settled, giving them extra dimensions. Pep Guardiola took last season personally, upset with himself for failing to arrest the slide and irritated by underperforming players. He will not accept a similar showing this season, especially after the sizable outlay on reshaping the squad. Guardiola overhauled his coaching staff, with the most eye-catching appointment being Jürgen Klopp's former No 2 Pep Ljinders, who joins as an assistant coach. The change in personnel will bring new ideas, something Guardiola was seeking as he sought a refresh on the pitch and in the dugout. Those pesky charges just will not go away for Manchester City and the Premier League. It feels as if this situation has dragged on since Adam was a lad and rivals will continue to use it as a stick to beat the club with, while City plead innocence and claim a witch-hunt. No one is satisfied with the state of affairs and everyone will want finality as soon as possible because it is a constant distraction. A freeze on ticket prices brought some goodwill after lengthy criticism of the club's desire to squeeze every penny they could out of supporters. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion It is a positive that City finally have a proper left-back in Rayan Aït-Nouri, but Rayan Cherki is the more exciting acquisition. The 21-year-old has been linked with top clubs since his teenage years, but City finally got their hands on Lyon's attacking midfielder, who falls into the maverick category. He dribbles, creates and scores goals, while also possessing the ability to produce the unpredictable with the ball at his feet, and he can play in numerous positions behind a striker. It is hard to predict what he will do next, which will concern defenders. In an era when football is prescribed, Cherki can be the rule breaker. A year ago, Oscar Bobb scored in the Community Shield to signal he was about to break out. He had enjoyed a great pre-season and Guardiola was confident in his qualities. The highly rated Bobb was the reason City were happy to part with Cole Palmer, thinking they had someone who could surpass him in their ranks. Unfortunately for Bobb, he broke a leg in training and required a lengthy rehabilitation period, taking longer than anyone expected, meaning he made three Premier League appearances, all as a substitute. There is greater competition in the positions he wants to play, but given a chance he could be a star turn. By his own admission, 2024-25 did not live up to Phil Foden's high standards. From claiming the Professional Footballers' Association's player of the year award for the previous season, Foden dropped off dramatically. He attributed the problems on the pitch to various factors, including facing challenges 'off the pitch mentally' and it is understandable that those affected his ability to perform. The 25-year-old is a generational talent, possessing everything his manager wants in a player, and he will be desperate to show it. Given the correct freedom, he should be the man leading the latest incarnation of Guardiola's football and a new era at City.
