Bumrah playing fifth Test would be great deal for us, says Gill
Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three.
With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest.
'If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told BBC's 'Test Match Special'.
'If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack," Gill added.
Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings.
However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps (with Mohd Siraj), including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale.
'Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis," Cook said.
'They made a mistake at the beginning of the series saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line.
'If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision," he added.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all fast bowlers are available for selection ahead of the Oval Test and didn't rule out Bumrah featuring in a fourth match. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare," Gambhir asserted on Sunday.
'We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test. 'No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country," he added.
After the Lord's Test, India suffered a spate of setbacks, with Arshdeep Singh nursing a blow to his bowling hand, Akash Deep ruled out with a groin issue, and Mohammed Siraj battling general fatigue. All-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy was also ruled out of the series.
As a result, India had to fly in reinforcements from home. Anshul Kamboj joined the squad and was preferred over Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI. PTI APA KHS KHS

Washington Sundar's father lets it rip at Ajit Agarkar after Manchester rescue act: 'Selectors should watch his...'
Washington Sundar might have played just 12 Tests for India so far, but he has managed to leave a significant and lasting impression. With the bat, he averages 44.86, while with the ball, he has taken 32 wickets, including a seven-wicket haul last year. However, the turning point in his career might have come on the final day of the Manchester Test against England, when he hit his maiden hundred, helping the visitors eke out an improbable draw. Washington Sundar hit his maiden Test century on Sunday on Day 5 of the Manchester Test. (@BCCI X) Washington Sundar's father, M Sundar, believes his son has been hard done by the selectors as his performances are constantly ignored and he is yet to get a consistent go in all three formats of the game. When Sundar came out to bat on the final day, England had their tail up and there was a realistic chance of them gaining an unassailable lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. However, the 25-year-old had other plans, and he formed an unbeaten 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja to help India stay alive in the five-match series. The youngster's father believes everyone else continues to get a consistent run, but only his son doesn't get the same treatment. It must be mentioned that Sundar didn't make the playing XI for the series opener in Headingley. However, the management brought him into the lineup from the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Also Read: Washington Sundar now a proper all-rounder. Ravindra Jadeja no longer… Speaking to The Times of India, M Sundar said, 'Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them.' 'Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England. The selectors should watch his performances,' he added. 'My son gets dropped…' Sundar also returned with a four-wicket haul in the second innings of the Lord's Test, where he got the better of English batters. Sundar's father reckons the former keeps getting dropped just after one or two failures, when this is not the case for other cricketers. 'My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year,' he said. "He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this, and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now," he added. Sundar's father also discussed the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, saying even the Gujarat Titans played him sporadically and failed to give him a consistent run. 'Even his current team Gujarat Titans don't give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), smashing 48 off 24 balls,' said M Sundar. 'Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn't been able to enjoy a consistent run even in case of domestic cricket,' he added.

But the net was too high for the four-year-old to reach. Nearby, a chess class was taking place in the same building. Her parents enrolled her that moment, a star was born. Raised by doctor parents in Nagpur, Divya took to the game with startling speed. By the age of 13, she was already known for her poise under pressure-a video from 2017 shows a young Divya stating she was unafraid of any opponent and never tired of fighting till the Cool ConqueroradvertisementBy 2018, Srinath had spotted her gift. "She was already stronger than most girls her age. And she had this incredible talent for big moments," he evolution wasn't entirely smooth. Like many young athletes, Divya experienced a lull during the COVID-19 pandemic, taking time off for her studies between 2020 and 2022. But by 2023, she was roaring June 2025, in London, she stunned World No. 1 Hou Yifan at the World Rapid & Blitz Team Championship. "I was thinking, 'Where can I get my norm?' And now I'm a Grandmaster. I think it was fate."advertisementUnder FIDE rules, winners of certain elite events can bypass the conventional path and become GMs directly-and the Women's World Cup is one of them. In three whirlwind weeks, Divya captured the title, booked a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, and made her triumph, she remains grounded about her game. "I definitely need to learn endgames. I'm pretty sure I messed it up at one point. It should have been an easy win," she of a Chess RenaissanceDivya's rise is symbolic of India's new golden generation in chess-young, bold, and brimming with self-belief-following closely behind male stars like World Champion D is now among the favourites to challenge for the Women's World Championship. She will be joined in the 2026 Candidates Tournament by runner-up Humpy and third-placed former World Champion Tan Zhongyi."She is very strong. And in terms of her potential, she was already at Grandmaster level before this tournament," says Srinath."I think she has a very good chance of becoming the Women's World Champion-or at least be firmly on that path. In general, she's quite confident going into big tournaments."advertisementWith calm as her superpower, an accidental start, and a destiny carved through grit and genius, Divya Deshmukh's story is a defining chapter in the Indian chess renaissance of the 21st only 19, her greatest moves are likely yet to come.
